There's a very small demand for merchandise at the moment. Sure, we're very loud and vocal on here, but it's tiny compared to the number of people that will be playing the game next year. As anyone who's ordered this stuff knows you need to be making it in bulk to be profitable.

Styggron -- which badges are you referring to as the Acornsoft ones? The one with the black enamel? I am pretty sure that is the Acornsoft version.

The Gold version is the Firebird version. Not sure if there is another BBC version. Also how did you find out only ~30 or so are in existence? Did someone from Acornsoft tell you.

The Acornsoft one was offered to me but for $692AUD (with the exchange rate) no way I could ever pay that in a million years. I was told there were supposedly only around 30 approx. Acornsoft only gave them out once a month from a random letter and lost interest in 1985 and so only around 30 or so went out....supposedly. They were never given out at trade shows so very rare.

I could never verify any of it and plus I can't afford $692.

Okay, interesting - and are you talking about the one with Black-backed enamel?

Also do you have his details at all? Feel free to PM me ....

It was described as the gold and black Acornsoft one.

Even if hundreds went out I could never afford that so it is largely academic.

Interesting - especially as there is no gold and black Acornsoft one!! And the Firebird one is blue writing on gold plating!!

I am fairly sure the black / silver ones are the original Acornsoft versions. They do go for silly cash on Ebay - I saw one a couple of years a go for 250 quid. And I think the silver wing badge went for 200 quid on ebay a while back as well ...

Amazing what people will pay for this stuff - but I am not tempted to sell mine yet!

Here are some other Acornsoft badge -- no idea if these are official or not. Perhaps they were sent to people who sent in their card but did not achieve ELITE rank. Does anyone have one of these from Acornsoft?

Notice that they aren't dissimilar to the black Acornsoft Elite badges - black background with red ELITE written across.

Never seen that one.

Remember in Australia these NEVER came here. Any of them.

For a real badge Acorn or otherwise I would never pay more than around £40-50 equiv. (Around AUD$78ish) I reached ELITE status on the C64 so I earned my wings per se.

I'd be happy if Frontier sold old school ones from ELITE. At the back they would say 2013 or something to distinguish them from the original one. I'd be fine with buying official re release ones from Frontier anytime. Because they would be from Frontier they are "Official" and "real".

A little collectors box with 5-6 variants for around £60 would be perfect.

As I said, all I was told was it was the Acornsoft Gold and Black one. I wanted to verify everything hence me asking on here.

Like you said if you are correct that there is no gold and black Acornsoft one, either the person made a mistake or it was not a genuine one I don't know. Either way I could not verify and I would NEVER pay that. Prices only go crazy because people are prepared to pay it, well I'm NOT prepared to pay ridiculous prices :).

Sorry for posting twice. I forgot to multiquote this.

But if you bought them all, you'd be able to ask even sillier prices and....

I don't do things like that. If a fan wanted it I would give it to a reasonable prices beause it would be going to a good home and to someone whom appreciates it rather than someone seeing it as an investment to make more money out of.

I'm far more altruistic in this respect.

I have been doing some research for The Elite Archives and came across a small piece in the December 1984 edition of Micro Adventurer magazine which states: "So far, 55 people have gained Elite status, and have been awarded the handsome black and silver badge that goes with this highest rank."

I'll Never Be Able to Afford That......

Really dumb qustion I'm sure ..... but I have a 29 year old badge that means the world to me .. http://wouter.bbcmicro.net/pictures/software/elite_pins.jpg (the one on the left) .... any plans to continue this ? (a shiny new badge for shiny new Elite:Dangerous players that make it to Elite)

n.b. not a show-stopper; already pledging £300 and not planning on pulling it regardless of the respose ... just curious.

p.s. if anyone want's to buy my badge ... a £300,000 pledge to E:D kickstarter will sort the deal, anything less ... sorry, it's worth more to me ;-)

Are these for real, I've never heard of them and I think by the time I was playing they must have either run out of them or this deal wasn't extended anywhere beyond the U.K..

Besides, I only ever got to the status of Deadly.

Well 8 of them are...

There are so many different types?

With a bit of patience/effort you can make you own silver coloured one for fun and relatively cheaply.
And it would be unique/art. You need to walk on a beach and find a cuttlefish body. (or buy from pet-shop I think), go to car boot sale and buy an old pewter tankard (£1 haggle). Using image of the badge carve out an impression using a sharp tool into half side of the cuttlefish body, creating an access channel, seal it with other half of the cuttlefish body . Melt a bit of the tankard with one of those DIY shop mini gas blow torches and pour it into mould channel you made. wait a few seconds and you have an exclusive Elite badge that just needs a bit of filing to get rid of excess metal around the edge where you poured it in. I made a unique badge of a dragon this way.
If you don't like it adjust the design in the cuttlefish body, or if made too many mistakes start afresh.
And don't try and sell them unless you have permission.
