On a much brighter note, I FINALLY got my internet issues sorted, (the joys of living in the middle of nowhere.) long enough to watch the video! For the first time! Instead of tempting fate, I downloaded a copy for repeated watchings.

Loving every aspect of it in high definition! Now, the actual musical score was suitably epic, and certainly Elite Dangerous may be the first game where I don't turn off the music! (outside of the originals of course!) Fantastic job.

Second, I was watching the flight model rather closely. It certainly looks like something I would enjoy even if it isn't finalized. The graphics are GORGEOUS. The cockpit design is especially good, not too intrusive, while very immersive.

Just a fantastic video and WELL worth the wait!

I didn't realise you could download a youtube vid for later viewing. Cool.

Although I would normally turn in-game music either down low or off altogether (or play something more synthy directly from my pc), I did think the composition was very professional and would definitely add to the tension of the moment (for those that need/like it).

At the risk of being flamed for my opinions.....I especially liked the distinct lack of american rock guitar (Praise be to Braben).

Realplayer is my program of choice.

You can legitimately capture YouTube vids with RealPlayer?

I am not so sad that I would go through the video frame by frame or anything like that.... but I went through the video frame by frame watching the special effects, lighting, model details, hud etc... I especially liked where the hud items lost cohesion (blurred into red) when the ship was near an explosion and the lasers strafing across the hull (even if they weren't doing a great deal of damage) looked sumptuous.

If it were actually possible for me, I'd be speechless.

Erasmus was the patron saint of sailors wasn't he - rather apt for the role me thinks.

[Edit - I also noticed that the dirty Feds aimed their missiles at the habitation ring rather than trying to take out the weapons and engines - I hope they and their escorts get massive hits on their reputations for that one :)]

Downloadable high def video?

Sorry if this was asked already, but how about a downloadable high def video of the scene? Perhaps as a torrent? I don't mind youtube, but since a watch that clip several times each day I'd love to really see the small details that youtube compression throws out.

Not just download for later viewing, but I followed the design of someone else, and made it into a screen saver, available here :D

Ignore the splash logo in the top corner, I may do it properly sometime. ;)

There are several versions downloadable from Youtube, I've downloaded the 1920x1080 high def version available here

So how many times and what ways have you watched it?
Youtube with headphones at work when it was released
then youtube on phone to show peeps
then youtube at home on the big telly with the media center hooked up and loud volume
then downloaded the files and made the screen saver and watched 3 times.
then the 1080 mp4 file on the media center with volume up (twice)
then the screensaver went on the laptop which sits beside me in the office and loops all day while I work on the desktop so I keep turning my head for a quick view.

That looks like the game I would barely have dared hope that Elite could become.

What you really mean is..... "This is what I imagined I was looking at 25 years ago when I started playing Elite?" I did

Heh, at least I can see what you used to download the vid from YouTube.

ahh noo, it doesn't show anything on the vid clip what I used. I think someone pointed me to savetube or something like that. I downloaded the flv and the 1080p mp4 versions. Then on here somewhere I saw someone post you can just put ss in front of the url..... www.youtube.com/<videourl> becomes www.ssyoutube.com/<videourl> then that gives you the available video qualities you can download.

I think a few of stikky's will be coming in the near future too.

Alpha tester's videos stickky thread
Beta1 tester's videos stickky thread
Beta2 tester's videos stickky thread

All pre-approved by FD before being posted up.... lol they'll have their work cut out.

of course all these en-masse player videos being posted up will be big advertising for FD in the run up to release.

Gongratz FD!

This video is now your most watched on your Youtube channel!

The previous champion (the first dev diary from the KS) has at the moment 136.637 views and this latest video just passed it with 136.657 views!

Let's see what the next video can come up with shall we!

If there isn't, then I'm sure you will be able to turn the music off in the game and stick a CD on! ;)

But I don't want to have to turn off the music again this time, also CD music isn't really seamlessly adaptive to the situation.

I really hope we will also have the kind of electronic music you hear in the ED Dev Diaries, I hope they aren't throwing that away.

We are going for a more orchestral soundtrack.

Michael

Maybe, the prinicipal direction is orchestral.

Michael

You can take a look (hear!) at the soundtrack for Tron: Legacy by Daft Punk. That is an awesome style-mix between Orchestral and Electronic. I believe they were helped by a big film composer (Hans Zimmer?) for the orchestral part.

Also this year's game "Remember Me" for all it's faults have beautiful electronic orchestral track. Maybe too much for FD taste, but still it gives idea how good those styles can be smashed together. It also used changing music as I understand will be concept for ED.

Btw, Michael, question lingering on for long time - that music which is used in background for your dev and fiction diaries, is that something you have produced on your own or it is commercial track available somewhere? Thanks in advance :)

Peter.
