Elite:Dangerous for Linux?

Just what I was going to say, so maybe only one more needed

Its there and now heading towards 1000.

I've always said if they release on Steam it opens up an avenue for SteamOS(Linux)+Steam machines and now add in an ecosystem including VR which imho at least on paper seems ahead of OR currently I think they'll be well set to take advantage of a new market. Not one I would expect to be huge in it first year, but one which should keep growing as Valve have the funds for at least some loss-leading.

How is head tracking with Linux or indeed Mac?

Oh and of course few new anything about the Steam release until it suddenly showed up, so I am overall feeling quite positive we shall it someday.

Steam is less relevant than releasing for Mac in terms of a 'nix release.
openGL is done, file structure is done.....

I can't really see Linux being much of a jump from Mac. Have they tried compiling the Mac version on Linux? If they've mainly replaced DirectX with OpenGL, it may compile on Linux with little modification.

I'd be really interested to hear from the Devs what the significant issues are running on Linux?

Or is there going to be a surprise Linux beta released in the next month!?

The problem with Linux isn't getting ED on it, that's the "easy" part.

The hard part is getting the peripheral manufacturers to make - and keep updated - Linux drivers for their HOTAS and joystick hardware.

Let the Linux users deal with that. They're no stranger to difficulties with hardware.

Put a big red sticker on the Linux version... "UNSUPPORTED". But please let us have a go at it.

You can play ED with keyboard and mouse also, and whilst many people might not find it pleasant, many people also do.

Not really hard at all.

Most if not all products are USB based and Linux will see everything just fine, the 'hard part' was with Xplane 10 dealing with permissions to read the inputs (KDE had no such issue which makes me think X-Plane may not be engineered well in this area). I am using the full CH pro HOTAS setup and before that I had a Logitech pro stick hooked up.

If you mean the software, such as CH control panel, well its primary design is for older games, although it allows for further mapping, and something like this exists in Mac OSX I believe.

I just signed the petition (and I never sign those things!)

But I don't think a Linux port would be trivial - or profitable. I would however contribute funds if that were all that was necessary. (A penguin paint job anyone?)

But given the majority of players don't use Linux and a port could potentially result in a diversion of resources; even with funding - it may not be a good move strategically. I wouldn't expect it to, for example, pull as much new business as an XBOX port or even a paid DLC.

It would win over the hearts of a few hardcore nerds though. And who can put a price on that.

Make it so, FD. Linux support will be very good for the game, and will also provide lots of community goodwill. I understand that it might not be the most profitable venture, but don't underestimate linux gamers, they always support those who support them.

They even have libs for the Saitek x52 (pro). https://github.com/nirenjan/x52pro-linux
