Elite:Dangerous for Linux?

YOU may not (and I don't), but guess what the wife bought?

My wife bought her second System76 notebook which runs Ubuntu.. She's in Human Resources, has been using Linux for years.. (even though she won't let me touch it, cuz when i touch it, it breaks)..

She'd probably never ever in a million years play E: D, but she sure isn't in a hurry to use WindowsAnything, either..

Meanwhile.. after watching a few Let's Plays and livestreams of people playing Horizons, i shore wish Elite: Dangerous would come out for Linux already..

People talk about statistics, and distributions.. but.. had Frontier made E: D for Linux by now, how many people who've been following this thread for YEARS would have been loyal players all this time? how many more people would we have gotten to buy the game and play with us, and how many more people would have joined those that joined us? How much good will is Frontier willing to leave on the table out of reach?

Everybody knows the vast majority of games which have a Linux port ALSO have a great reputation and a loyal fanbase.. Linux game publishers have a better reputation than most other games you've never heard of because they've ONLY come out for Windows..

Sure, there are always blockbuster hits out there, but they're the minority too.. And even some of them are considering (or have) Linux ports..

Why isn't a Linux port of Elite: Dangerous on the horizon?

It is so disappointing. =(

I've showered Star Citizen with hundreds of dollars because they've PROMISED a Linux port, and I wouldn't even play it as much as I'd play Elite.

anyway.. another wasted US$0.02

It'll be so shameful to have to play it in WINE. I wonder if i can even download the game to play, having been an original very early backer.. It'll be so pathetic to play it in WINE when a native port would (have) beat(en) the pants off a Mac port.

Well, if I'm perfectly honest I can't fault my Win7 load despite not really wanting to like it. I'm running Elite with three gig of ram and only two cores and most of the time it's more stable than Perry Como. It can stay..

Who uses a PC for games? Honestly, that's what consoles are for.

To say the OS isn't for gaming is rather bold, especially since you apparently haven't even seen it. Valve has ported Steam to Linux, and does the majority of its games development on Linux before porting their final product to Windows for release. Strike you as odd? It shouldn't.

I am probally a hardcore gamer, but it seems there must be something wrong with me as i hate consoles for gaming. The XBOX 360 in my cupboard didn`t even see 24 hours of use before i ditched it.

PC gaming 4eva

The minute Elite comes to Linux I'll ditch winbloze.

Elite is the only thing that still keeps me on this joke-for-an-OS system.

I really really really really really really really really really really hope Frontier makes this happen. My blood pressure rises to dangerous levels on windoze.

How does the new fancier DX11 stuff work on Linux? I think ED uses a lot of this for Horizons....not portable to Linux?

I think perhaps you're missing the meaning of what a port is. Feel free to ask the Wine guys about DirectX 11 though.

If you're asking whether or not similar type functions can be achieved natively in Linux, then the answer is yes.

Hi just registered and signed the petition.
What's the status about E : D on Linux ?
What's and when was the last sign of life from a Dev on this topic ?

Well, in all honesty, I'd have to say that it's even less likely that we'll get an official port now that Horizons is out and Mac OS support isn't carrying over to it either.

It sucks but life goes on, am building a secondary PC with win7 just for few racing games (assetto corsa and dirt rally, since iracing works ok on Linux) ...
very OT but .. which are the best monitors for E : D ?
Some of you use an HDTV with your rig and this game ?

I don't mean to be too negative about it. There is some hope yet as SteamOS, Vulkan, and Linux gaming in general are taking off a bit. Valve is an awesome ally in the effort, for mutual benefit, and is putting back in instead of just taking out. So... there is a definite avenue of hope.

And yes, my main rig in my signature is an integral component of my home entertainment system, among other things. I'm not sure how people make do without using computers in this way. Been doing similar for years back when S-Video was a thing even. Anyway, yeah, I use a 1080p 47 inch viewable (46 inch class) 60 Hz Sony Bravia as my main display. I've been thinking about getting a 60 inch one at 120Hz. "4K" honestly doesn't interest me much beyond use as a kind of super sampling method, which my video cards are capable off. Great for high resolution zoomable screen shots though.

Sure are a lot of pages to this thread for something that isn't considered important. You know, I have a Windows 7 partition I boot to just to play Elite Dangerous. Everything else I can do in Linux. Literally. Everything. Else.

You all know Apple OS is Apples version of Unix, wih Apples GUI.
Should not be that differcult to get Mac ED working in Linux.

I think driver and 3D support are likely to be more of a barrier. Windows have direct X, Mac has OpenCL. Not sure what the support in Linux for OpenCL is and whether or not it is constant across all the countless distress. Add in driver support from Nvidia and AMD not to mention VR issues and you have a whole world of pain.

Got you beat. I use a Mac (Mac Pro) for everything else but I have an entire top end PC with 980Ti cards in SLI, DK2, etc etc JUST to play ED.

Yes ED is on the Mac but it is rubbish compared to the PC version and as far as I'm aware Horizons isn't supported.
