Elite:Dangerous for Linux?

Interesting, but is another flavour of Linux really a good idea?

Most people refer to flavors in terms of how the tools operate (apt-get, slackpkg etc) , or how the file structure is laid out to things like how a program starts (again Slackware is different (rc.d) as can others). I find Slack to be the most elegant :). So I would say it is Cherry, one of my favourite flavours, whilst SuSE could be lime. Application wise, I am running Steam on Slackware, not an officially supported OS, but Valve don't care when it comes to applications the term flavour really doesn't count so much.

Valve will likely base their OS off of one of the available flavours, most likely Debian/Ubuntu and then adapt its code to work on the hardware without having to download any other software components. Think of Android, it runs Linux, but most people don't notice or care.

Linux needs amazing games and Frontier happens to be this kind of a game!

Actually they have every right to refuse as they are a business and will only release games where it makes business sense to do so.

If they decide to release a Linux version it will be after the release of the Windows version, where it is more profitable.

Business sense?!
There is absolutely no business sense to do it. Take me for example. I haven't bought the game yet, just in case linux version shows up. When march 2013 comes I will gladly pay for win32 binary. Even more I will go to the pc store, buy another spare drive and install windows there. I will do all the effort to play it. Like many other linux users here. And since Frontier is a game for intelligent humanoids I bet there will be plenty of linux users playing!

Moral sense?!
There is a lot of it!

Kickstarter? Community based! This forum software? Community based! etc. etc.
Plenty of community based tools were used to forge the game.
And linux needs such a game to prosper.

No good games, no linux user base. No linux user base. No good games.
This is a never ending spiral. And I can confirm its very existence since I reformatted my linux system couple of times just to play some titles.

That is so much crap I can't help but respond.

If FD released E:d tomorrow solely on Linux they would never make their money back.

I would be very surprised if any of the Kickstarter money was left and have started eating into what ever backing they subsequently got.

I am sure there is a lot of Linux users interested in Elite but not enough to turn a profit and E:d is not a killer app that would move people to Linux.

Community based tools to create the game? Proof?

Also community based != Linux.

Linux needs good games to prosper but one single title will not do it.

Steam might, but it will take a few years.

Yes,i would really like a Linux version. I am in the process of getting rid of any Windows based computers in my house. ED is the only reason i would keep Windows actually.

Or you buy cheap hardware with suspect support. My Win7 machine crashed very, very rarely and usually down to the power management system. Since I moved to Win8 even that has gone away.

Heck, I love Linux, but even I would not say that it crashes less than Windows. My Win7 is very stable indeed, but I usually have various sorts of problems with my Ubuntu installations (mostly fixable, but even these days it requires me to go to the terminal to fix a lot of stuff which is very annoying).

Therefore I welcome any new big players to the Linux playfield. Valve's involvement can only help Linux grow into a more and more usable OS. Perhaps even usable enough to encourage more game developers to produce native code for it.

That actually makes a lot of sense! :)

Put together a decent costing for how much it would cost to create the Linux version and then put it to the Linux users to see if they want to fund it. Obviously you'd have a few people who have pledged already but I'm guessing they have Windows or Mac or wouldn't have bothered pledging when nothing was guaranteed for Linux. Perhaps Frontier could factor in "free upgrades" for those who've paid already. But it does seem like a "nothing to lose" option - Kickstart it and if the demand is there, sorted! If it's not, perhaps we can finally kill all these "giv ma tha linux" threads. ;)

I've paid in already, but I would certainly throw in a few more ££ for a Linux version, and I have Mac, Windows & Linux machines...

<mutters something about penguinistas>

<mutters something about Contrabandistas who always mutter about penguinistas> :D;)

Dump Ubuntu, switch to Mint 15 with Cinnamon. Best move I ever made.

+1 for a Linux edition of E: D.

Does E:D support Linux?

Hello Elitists! (how members of this community are called?)

Since Mac OS support seemed to be ensured by Kickstarter pledges and the pledge amount recently reached 2Mio (and Cobra is a multiplatform engine) I was asking myself if E:D will natively run on Linux. Unfortunately after searching the General Forums I did not find any recent statements for or against a Linux version. Is there specific information available? (being spoiled by Vendetta Online, playable with Win/Linux/Android/Mac :/ )

Best regards.

Mac roughly 3 months after PC release, then after that there are no announced plans for any other platform... that's not to say there won't be, just nothing official has been said.

Hi Roi!

I am Linux user here too. This get asked a lot, but current answer is - FD is making game for Windows and OS X at this moment. They are interested in evaluating other platforms, but that will come after releasing initial version, which planned in next year March (if schedule holds) - and Mac OS X version 3 months later.

From my perspective fact that they will have OS X port speaks well for potential of Linux version, because they both use OpenGL support. Of course, question is - does new Valve activities with Steam machines would give FD interest to port ED to Steam OS (effectively Linux)? We have to wait and see :)
