Elite:Dangerous for Linux?

One more voice here, which would really like to see Linux support!

I already bought the game, but it would be much greater if I hadn't to boot that *stupid* Redmond-OS for it.

quicky update. 1.7.54 still giving wine system error. Will keep checking :)

Another quick edit. 1.7.54 staging actually opens a game window now, but crashes out with a .net error before the game fully launches. Will keep trying.

Hi, just wanted to say the only reason I'm running an MSOS at all is so that I can play 'Elite: Dangerous'. I'd be so happy to erase and forget all about it as soon as ED for Linux exists.

im new to pc gaming since the last 2 years....i have always noticed this war of words between windows pc and this linux stuff?.....now the only experience i have of linux is through ubuntu? wich i ran on a ps3 a few years ago now...and it was just a basic os with a web browser..but cool that it ran on the ps3 lol

but when looking at buying my first gaming rig i did not see any linux gaming PCs for sale?......what is the difference gentlemen?...why isnt linux a known gaming platform?..
and if you guys bought a pc for gaming why did you go for a linux one?..

i am being genuine with my questions here i assure you gents

but someone please explain the difference to me between these 2 OSs

Windows has a high hardware overhead. For comparison take UT2004. Install one copy on a PC with Windows, and another on an identical PC with Linux.

The Linux PC will vastly outperform, graphically, the Windows PC with the same code.

Microsoft made DirectX and incentivised game publishers to use it. They really hit a home run by pushing their XBox, which they ran at a loss for years and also by sabotaging OpenGL (until we caught on to them). It's a long, complicated and sad story but the upshot is that MS did what MS does and now we have what we have. You can't blame them really. Except you can, and should. They also use the power of games to drive their OS sales, locking out old OS versions from new DX features. It's called planned obsolescence, and it's filthy.

What ^He said. Basically MS have monopolised PC gaming since the days of DOS. Their planned obsolescence (damn hard to spell) is one of the biggest grievances that I have with them. For example, winxp is perfectly capable of running DX10/11 games, but due to MS pushing for more money, they spun a yarn that it technically wasn't up to the job and pushed people to Vista/7. Not to mention the new 'telemetry' features in Win 10 (built in spyware).

Valve have been championing the linux platform for a couple of years now for a number of reasons. Their new Steam Machines, the rise of the linux market in nations that don't particularly trust the west (China etc.) and also the advent and push of MS Windows Store as a selling platform that could grow to rival Steam.

Most of us here are probably 'dual booters'. We have both Windows and Linux installed and only really ever boot up into windows if we feel like playing some games that just won't work on Linux. Elite Dangerous is the only game left that I play that keeps windows on my computer, as soon as I can get it working through WINE or if there is a Linux client released then it will be So Long and thx for all the pish to MS.

thanks for the replys gentlemen...

i think ill grab a copy of the latest linux software over the weekend and install it on my rig and see how it fares....and i dont mind learning new computing skills.

No worries at all. If I may suggest that if you want to take a closer look at linux, then download the latest mint 64bit cinnamon edition from http://linuxmint.com/ Write it to a spare USB memory stick using https://rufus.akeo.ie/

You can then boot from USB into linux mint. Play about with it a bit and see if you like it without worrying at all if it will affect your PC/windows. If you like it then you can dual boot with it and windows (lots of tutorials on how to do it through google).

But hey, back to trying to get this working through linhx :D

I bought a PC for work, and that for me means Linux as I really can't perform my job in Windows. If I want to game, I need either a second PC (very wasteful) or a second hard drive with Windows on it (which is what I have) which is a bit wasteful and really annoying to have to reboot back and forth.

Valve will be pushing SteamOS machines soon, those will be the first Linux gaming PCs I will have come across.

Please take my money.

I run Linux at home, this is also my first post so I will be clear. I paid $1250 for Star Citizen. I paid $500 for George Oldziey's Wing Commander 3/4/Prophecy Score/Orchestral release. I have just backed Infinity: Battlescape on kickstarter. I am offering $250 for Elite Dangerous on Linux. Not on Windows, and Not on Mac. Yes I have a Mac pro and two Apple laptops at home, I even have a copy of Windows floating around. But my gaming PC runs Linux. I don't care about Windows or Mac.

I am a Linux gamer, and I only pay money for Linux games. If you don't like that then you can go without my money.

I am currently working on many Linux space game projects. I actively contribute to Vegastrike's Wing Commander Privateer mod. I am currently working on Porting Freespace 2's toolkits to Linux and adding support for other game engines. I do not need any particular game. There are many space game options on Linux and the numbers continue to increase. I would like to see Elite Dangerous among them.

If there is a problem with lack of developer knowledge regarding the platform, please reach out to me. I know several commercial Linux developers who do contract work who could port Elite Dangerous for you, I can get you in touch with them.

The market exists, even if we the Linux gamers sometimes have to spend more to make it happen. We are asking to be your customers. It's been a long time, please don't make us have to upgrade Elite Frontier 3's graphics to get something that's not as good as Elite Dangerous.

Hell, I'd pay frontier just for reaching out to this guy.

You need to find a lot more guys with $250 to spare to pay for the programmers to port the code to linux.. When you have about 2000 or more of you together, they might start listening ;-)

Half a million dollars to port ED to Linux.

Give me half a million dollars and the source code and I'll do myself. Heck, I might even do it from the binaries in assembly for that price. (OK, I'd probably just outsource it to someone in Eastern Europe more familiar with these sort of things and skim a fair amount off the top.) :D

I hope some day I don't have to decide anymore between Elite Dangerous or Linux.
Does anyone know if Star Citizen runs on Linux?

Of course, you are assuming there is no contractual agreement with M$ to not port to Linux as part of the E: D XBone deal.
