Elite:Dangerous for Linux?

On the subject of Linux, it is something that will be considered but there is research that needs to be done into time and cost commitments, before we give our official stance on it. A quote from Kickstarter:
We are treating Linux seriously, we need to do some research for costings and so forth before promising. I'm sure you'd rather we did that than just slap the stretch goal up and hope for the best :) Michael
Ashley hasn't posted anything since 2015 so I'm not sure if they are still on the team, but I think four years is long enough to formulate an opinion on this topic.

Can we get some sort of update? Michael Brooks maybe?

If it takes a separate Kickstarter to fund this, sign me up now.

Okay we have some things to summarize.
* PS4 version rolling out early this year, definitely not a DX12 candidate. This step was decisive in terms of what FD is looking for (staying in the MS ecosystem or going for the bigger console market share of PS4).
* PS4 = PC-compatible hardware and UNIX-like software. We'll see if the implementation moved towards unix-linux or just made enough changes to go from D3D11 to GNM/GNMX. The downside is, this also looks like they did port for another platform-exclusive solution for the money, not for being future proof (the irony is, PS4s can actually benefit from Vulkan and hackers already made a working Linux distro on PS4s).

Hopefully I'll be proven wrong and FD will come up with a Linux+OpenGL/Vulkan version.

Since the latest PC CPUs (Ryzens and Kaby Lakes) are no longer supported by MS on anything less than win10, it's up to jilted windows users to send a clear message:
Should game developers make customers force-buy into windows 10, that was the money meant for games; kiss the money/customers goodbye.

If FD is expecting money for a linux port explicitly, from exiting customers or late adopters, most win7 or linux users would pledge much rather than pay to MS.

I asked Feral Interactive to contact FD on Twitter. They gave a noncommittal non-answer, but they kinda have to.

If FD had *any* interest in seeing Elite on Mac properly and on Linux, that would be the easiest way for them. If we don't see anything in the next six months or so, nothing will ever come, most likely.

Good luck to us.

I love you guys so much.

I called it when I said they should do a Linux port before a Mac port, or they wouldn't like the results. Idr, it's in this thread somewhere. A Linux port (a platform with a much further advanced OpenGL than either Mac or PS4) would have been very informative in producing Mac and PS4 ports. Reasonably sustainable ones.

The Good News™ is, it's not too late. And to do (or have done) a Linux port now, would still inform any impending PS4 port, and possibly pave way to save (or redeem?) the Mac port, too.

WHO KNOWS what benefits interdisciplinary build targets could produce, what hidden gems, what abstractable features! Oh the Jenkins jobs that would produce such fascinating insights causing longstanding bugs across all platforms to get squashed by the superpowers of those in Frontier banging away at their collective brainchild.

anyway. I came to game, and still found I couldn't wile the evening away playing what will ultimately be the game I retire to the nursing home playing.. Elite: Dangerous still remains not out for Linux.

It's cool man.. I'll try again later, i guess.. You could have charged me 4 or 5 times over the original price by now.. maybe more.. whatever.. we're still cool..

I'll just go back to playing XCOM2/Deus Ex: Mankind Divided/Rocket League/Stellaris/Master Of Orion/Total War: Warhammer/HITMAN/Day Of Infamy/Shroud Of The Avatar/Civilization VI/exaustive list of titles... all by and large, more boring than Elite.. that I can't play.

=(

As Feral port to both Linux and macOS (including using Metal), I can't help feeling that using a third party might be the most efficient way to create and support other platform clients.

Though of course, the macOS port is still being developed. I can use the camera suite and my HOLO-ME creation from the Windows version sits happily at the helm. I presume that asteroid bases and mega ships will be in there too.

I think companies like Valve and Feral have proved that a small market share doesn't mean there isn't money to be made.

The irony being that since Linux supports a higher version of Opengl it would actually be easier to port across both ED and Horizons to the platform than it would be to port just Horizons to OSX.

Yes ... and since you can install Linux on your mac without having to purchase a software key from Microsoft having a Linux version would be a great way for many Mac users who are currently locked out of Horizons to gain a door to season 2 content and beyond.

I'd buy a new copy of the game to support a Linux client. I've already got 3 copies and an LEP, but I want to support development on my preferred platform.

I'd love to see a Linux port as well. When the game was released, I thought: let's just wait and hope for a Linux version. But it's been 2 years now, and I finally wanted to see what I backed for in 2012. So I'm playing in Windows now, and well it's a lovely game. The only bad thing is that I have to switch to windows to run it. :D

Isn't half the fun of Linux finding ways to make it run things that weren't designed for it?

Isn't that why WINE was created?

Now, I've nothing against Linux - I run a Ubuntu VM. But it would never be my go-to choice for a gaming platform. It's just too much work to do anything with it.
I've built PXE servers on it, and they work great. They also take 3 times as long to configure as a Windows version of the same thing.

My gaming platform is PS4, but June 27th is so far away. I installed Combat Tutorial Demo on a friend's computer, but I don't want to move into my friend's house to play with the demo. I have Linux box at home that can handle demo if I lower the settings. I would enjoy playing around with the demo on that box if it's doable. If not, June 27th it is.

I've posted this elsewhere but I'm sure this is on topic...

The only reason people use Windows is because you only need "A chimpanzee and two trainees" to run it...

But when things go wrong...

And that is why we should have a Linux version.

That probably break with terms of use . No wonder system get viruses.

Well nobody has yet answered the question, but at least you're bumping the thread so perhaps someone with an actual answer will see it, so "thanks", I guess?

-- EDIT --

Original question: Has anyone successfully installed the Combat Tutorial Demo on Linux using WINE?

The issue has always been with the DX integration in to WINE. So I guess the demo will have just as much problems as the real thing. The latest is that someone has managed to get the launcher running and that's it...

I was thinking that would probably be the case, though I'm often surprised at what people are able to make run under Wine. I do appreciate the answer, however! And I'm with you, it would be mighty nice if there were a Linux version. However, until then, Playstation OS is the closest thing I've got (stability wise at least).
