Elite:Dangerous for Linux?

I installed no man's sky, gta 5, and elite last night. Only got around to testing NMS and it didn't work, but now I see that I need the 396.51 driver for proton. I'll do a test again tonight.

There is a new driver out, 396.54 which gave me an increase in fps in Beat Saber, I also read that NMS works under proton so fingers crossed for you !

I would probably run it in a VM and pass over my other Titan Black card to it, but ED makes use of SLI and it's nice having both cards for BOINC, so until it's natively supported (a guy can dream), these sort of workarounds aren't really much of an option for me.

Though I prefer Debian, I don't mind running Windows 7 for the time being; I just won't be getting newer versions of Windows for home use.

Having it natively supported would mean that I could run it on my laptop again though. That'd be handy.

So Sins is working, civ IV is working, will try some newer stuff later, but hot damn!
Nvidia 384 drivers are working for the games I've tried so far...

Can't get Batman Arkham city to run, I'm thinking it's due to the redundant step of having to go through ms account.
Can't be sure, there's no error, it just won't run.

Hey i just heard about valves proton software. Is it any good?

Won't be switching to linux anytime soon, but getting it running to play lightweight games (like lostwinds :p) on mac would be great.

Anyone attempt a launcherless boot?

So I found this the other day https://github.com/xaduha/Elite-Dangerous-Scripts and I was using it for in-home streaming to my Linux computer from my Windows computer. It saves the auth keys so that you can launch the game without the launcher which helps deal with some problems I was having with in-home streaming.

Well today I got thinking...so I installed Elite Dangerous using proton a few days ago. I ran into the issue everyone has been which is the launcher cannot authenticate with the servers and will not launch the game. Well this got me thinking...if I install elite on my windows machine and run this "fix" then move the files over to my Linux machine and launch it with the same launcherless method, would that be able to work around and get me into the game.

Has anyone else attempted this method in the past? I plan on trying at some point this week but I wanted to see if anyone has attempted this in the past before I do.

It's a huge step forward for Linux gaming, but it's got a lot of hair on it for now. Thankfully, Valve's development pace on it seems really quick, and the list of supported games is expanding. If you're going to try it out I'd suggest the latest version of your distro, latest graphics driver, and latest kernel.

Sure wish there was some progress on this as Quicken and ED are about the only applications preventing me from moving everything to linux now that M$ has shown it's hand on moving Window$ toward a monthly subscription service going forward.

So with Proton being in Steam now, I was able to buy my first windows-only game in over 10 years.. No Man's Sky, i'm afraid.. But i've been able to play for uninterrupted hours in debian.. I am sad it's not Elite, every minute I play it, but I'm not unhappy for the moment, i guess.. it certainly scratches that Elite-like itch.. I do hope E: D does work under at least Proton someday.. I'd rather be pouring my hours into that.. =(

I heard somewhere that Steam is taking recommendations for titles to work on compatibility with Proton. Anyone happen to have more info on that?

+1 - Thanks for that

I'm pretty resigned to the fact that I've probably only got a couple years left until I'm forced off Windows and move everything to Linux

Once All Win 8 versions hit EOL and/or monthly subscription fees - I'll be done with Window$ for good

Issue currently is that ED required native .NET dll via winetricks and it doesn't work due of some issues with authorization. If that thing will be figured out, we most likely be able to run ED under Proton/Wine at some capacity.

Yeah, same here. I happen to prefer the Windows 7 interface, but was able to get 8.1 working well enough to my liking with some UI mods back before I moved that laptop over to Debian/KDE exclusively. Shame, since I used to like dipping into some Elite on it as well from time to time.

I could not get steam to install in Debian 9 (stretch). libGL.so.1 issue that I never resolved.
So am using kubuntu 18 instead.
Did you get steam to install in Debian 9, or some other version?

I have it on deb9, I'll let you know the fix. IIRC it was pretty minor.
