Elite Dangerous (incl. Horizons) will be free to keep via Epic store from 19th November (offer available for a week)

Actually, starting to count,,,

Some "ultimate alpha backer stuff" (including physical box sent to home with a game dvd, book, t-shirt etc.) with 200+ credits, and then few alt accounts, few gift accounts, Oculus Rift 2 (early VR, were still great) for 400 credits, R52 "joystick" for another 400 credits...

Yep, I have burned officially into ED more credits than my fleet carrier has yet eaten trit tons for fuel (saving it for Odyssey-planets exploration around galaxy with other stuff to see).

And guess I need to soon get for that new VR and new GPU for my PC. Or two.
But it has all been worth it though, with or without VR I feel so, thousands of beautiful space hours with a stunning view and amazing musics/sounds in this game, all I ever dreamed on childhood when playing Elite 2 and FFE (offline, dreaming about something like internet!!!).

Saying you don't trust Epic Games is equivalent to saying you don't trust the internet. It's just plain silly. In fact Epic Games are cutting developers a much better deal than Steam, taking only 12% instead of Steams 30%. Want to support games and developers? Support Epic Games.

It's not so much what they are doing, it's WHY they are doing it.
They made a game engine a lot of games devs use, fair enough.
Then they made a FPS battle-royale game that is frankly one of the worst games I have ever seen, but because kids play it (and they play it because they think it's the "cool" thing to play, they are kids after all) it made a lot of money.
They've then taken that money, and used it in their hate campaign against Steam and Apple.
Also, they are funded by Tencent, who have their sticky hands into everything .... just like Disney. If that doesn't ring alarm bells, I don't know what would.

So you can spin Epic to look good as much as you want, but it'll never change the truth.

That's nonsense.. but i do find something curious about that.. with a conspiracy hat on do you think they would have got some sort of US political support / backing to proceed with such a daring lawsuit.. platform holders taking a commission is a long accepted practice that sounds insane to simply break the rules and try to get away with it. I daydreamed someone in the american government who didn't like apple for other reasons said they would support a case against something so established and detrimental to the platform holders. Doesn't look like its worked out so well for epic though.

Hate campaign? Good lord. Perspective bias confirmed. I guess I can agree to disagree. Personally I consider Apple one of the worst, most corrupt, exploitive and manipulating companies on the earth today, but that's just me and my perspective. And Steam? Talk about a monopoly not appreciating some opposition... (or rather fanbois not appreciating some opposition. It's simplistic and naive).

Did you read my link, and consider the arguments presented?

In the end it's just my opinion though. :)

That's great, but I don't trust the Epic Store (Tencent owns 40%) so I'll stick to Steam.
You don't trust Epic Store? Why? I'd suggest Google or social media apps are far more of a concern/risk?
Not sure what is the concirn regarding epic store, I have few titles they offered for free before and no issues for me really
Given the state they launched in? Hah. No. They are certainly in a better spot now but first impressions are killer.
Lol don't they also own part of FD?
Yes, they do.
They are like the Disney of videogames.
You mean unlike the 9% they bought at FDEV? 😋
They own a lot of things - including some of the movies that you seen on the big screen in the last several years.
To be serious, Tencent does not have any control on Epic Games despite their investments.
I trust you don't play any of these games then:
It's just a basic games library and store, no bells and whistles.

I've been using it since GTA V was given away earlier this year and collecting the subsequent free games weekly from then on after.

Each one processes as a sales transaction but at zero money with no credit card details needed. Afterwards, it exists in your library for all time and installs/uninstalls as you please.

Outside of that, there's nothing else to it. So no catches.
Not "trusting" Epic Games is in my opinion indeed the same as saying you don't "trust" the internet. It's an assumption based on ignorance. I'm sorry I didn't make the analogy clear enough. My bad.
Then the answer is simple- I shall get a free copy of EDH from Epic, and play while wearing tinfoil y-fronts.

Which is what I do normally anyway.
Makes a great story at bedtime... :ROFLMAO:

(I seem to remember a post in recent times that insisted that Tencent's less than 9% holding in Frontier meant that they could dictate terms to the remainder of the shareholders, although I csan't be bothered to check if it was one of the current posters.)

Has anyone had experience of playing Elite via GeForce Now?

ED (Steam version) is listed as compatible - if GFN works with the upcoming giveaway version then I might be able to convince the daughter to fly SLF with an Android pad & controller 🤔

Your spoiler is very on-point, and at least one of them were amongst those complainers too :D

This is awesome. My only complaint is at some point you start using quotes from people talking about Tencent and Epic Store as if people are talking g about the same thing. Other than that 9/10 needs more free stufff

Add into that, Epic's hatred of Steam and poor customer service and poor launcher and store features ... then add that it was revealed that the Epic launcher was effectively spyware even scraping your Steam account details ....
Gamers have long memories.
Yeah, that was a deal-breaker for me. Epic will never see the inside of my PC.

Yeah I made 2 dummy accounts (in addition to my main egs account) just in case they need time to bake. My eyes are usually bigger than my stomach when it comes to alt accounts, so a total of 6 on pc should be fine.

Still not sure if I'm going to take advantage of this. I don't have an epic account and I'm not particularly inclined to make one (no political reasons in play here, I'm just not especially keen on the idea of signing up for yet another service at the moment).

That said, free is good. But cost hasn't been what has kept me from picking up another copy to this point - it's the fact that I'd have to start everything all over again from the beginning that puts me off a bit - and free doesn't fix that.

Still, having one in reserve might be a decent idea. Eh, we'll see. Maybe I will, maybe I won't. I certainly won't think too hard about it either way. Regardless, it's nice they're offering.

^ This is where I am, also. Undecided.
At the moment, life with one account is simple - done all the engineering, got all the ships I want and starting another one again ... without my nice paint jobs and Cobra IV .... even the sunglasses are no longer free 😬
