Elite Dangerous is not a sandbox

But I personally believe that even the dev team haven't decided yet what Elite Dangerous will become...

I bet they have for the most part. They just are not telling us.
Much is hidden still. There have been many hints that what we have seen so far is nothing compared to what already is in the developer's version of the game and it is even less compared to what David Braben envisions it will become in the near future.
So far this game's development has shown a vision, a professionalism and quality that is nothing less than stunning. I do not believe for a second that Braben has not made far stretching decisions about its future path already. I mean... he has been thinking about Elite for THIRTY years and has been wanting to make this sequel for TWENTY years.... I believe there is not one developer who is busy making a space sim at the moment that comes even close to Braben's vision. Just look at this alpha. It is an ALPHA, but look at how advanced it is compared to anything we have seen before. It is mind blowing.

I believe that for the core mechanics yes, but they might not know yet what all the expansions are. So for example they could implement more guild related activity in the future.

I think that Frontier have a least the next 2-3 years planned out and know the direction they are heading in .. They might well add guild support into the game eventually but I very much doubt it would appear before the Planetary landings and EVA/first person expansions

They could, but we do not know if Braben did not already decide last year that they would... eventually. So to state that they do not know where the game is heading is just a bridge too far.
We just do not know.

Considering the level of vision, quality and progress the game is showing so far I strongly believe Braben has his grand scheme for the coming years worked out pretty well already.

The devil is in the details I presume. We''l just have to wait and see. Whatever happens I trust it will be awesome.

honestly after 8 years of playing EVE im quite happy that sitting around in a fleet waiting for something to happen for hours is not on the agenda of ELITE.

EVE is a great political simulator which has one major flaw: Its not a game anymore, its a job. To play it effectively youll need to make time shift around the game and not the other way round. Seriously i always found this rather crazy and not really healthy for having some RL around it.

ELITE seems to be more catered towards a crowd, which is rather reasonable and well established in their own life. Its perfect for playing in between other things, you can make small trade runs in 10 - 30 mins and still have fun.

In EVE everything takes hours, no matter what you do. no thanks.

At the end it even doesnt matter anymore what kind of game is a sandbox or not. Fact is that one game dictates your time planning and the other doesnt. Enough reason for me to see ELITE as the far superior product regarding to both being games.

There is this from the latest newsletter, so at least they are considering it:

tluamiani: Will guilds/clans be supported and how?

Everyone is enrolled as a member of the Pilot’s Federation, and within that there will be ‘groups’ functionality that allows people to form organic associations. There are also the three major power blocs of Federation, Empire and Alliance of Independents that you can cosy up to (or act against) as you wish. Specifically created clans are something we will investigate after the first release of the game.

For me, the most interesting thing in this thread is, how it reminds me of similar ones in EVE beta.

- if i have no cockpit and can't play by joystick, noone will play it!
- if we can't reverse engineer at release, there is no reason to play
- we need PVE servers or the game will die
- no skill increase by doing things? This will never work...
Etc.

I know what was written in the Newsletter, but I am also fully aware that Frontier don't always express themselves well in writing :D

Wow is the troll thread still going?

As for the purpose of "what is Elite for" the simple answer is to have fun.

in the 1980's everybody wanted to play Elite, it was possibly the first major multiplatform game as it was ported to every major 8 bit system out there as well as 16 and 32 bit machines such as the Acorn Archimedes.

Everybody I knew with it sunk hundreds of hours into it and all there was to the game was exploring, trading and fighting.

The BBC disk version had 2 mission on it which was revolutionary at the time.

As for the comment that Frontier don't have an overall vision I think that is hilarious, their vision is to make a 21st Century version of Elite and use all the modern hardware.

There seems to be a vocal minority that wants this to be something else and are getting stroppy that they are not getting what they want.

Yes. This is Elite as it is now.
Then this clearly isn't the game for you. The only issue now is can you reconcile that fact?

Are you happy to accept that this game will never be what you wanted to be? In that case EVE awaits.

Or will you accept it for what it is, or what it may become? In that case welcome on board.

I read a lot of posts to other threads where people are calling Elite Dangerous a Sandbox. This thread went all over trying to define ED as a sandbox. How it will be a sandbox. How it has sandbox elements that you can add sand to. How we don't know what sand is going to be added, and cant even have this discussion until we get all the sand.
.
Pardon my embarrassment; but this is an open ended game. Open world. Choose your fate, pick your path, follow your instinct - not a sandbox. There is nothing to build, no blank canvas to work from. Nothing to become. You are a pilot, you have a ship. You do missions, you mine, trade, explore or warzones. You make friends and enemies. Progress the line. Practically everything is prefabricated, that which is not can be defined as PvP and not a sandbox.
.
EvE is barely a sandbox, and only through sheer volume of player created content does it hit that mark. If not for the near limitless combinations of possible engagements involving player created content it would be an open ended space game.
.
Space Engineers is a sandbox. Minecraft is a sandbox. SimCity is a sandbox. Halo Reach's Forge is a sandbox. The heart of a sandbox is giving a player nothing and allowing them to create anything. This is not, nor was it intended, to be that type of game.
.
Please stop calling Elite Dangerous a sandbox. Call it a Space Epic, Space Adventure, Space Simulator. Add all the adjectives you like; its a very good beginning to what can be. Its just not a sandbox.

Crafting is not the required attribute of the sandbox. Elite is the dogfighting sandbox. The sandbox is the digital universe - open world with its own set of rules and no end-game storyline. So please stop stopping.
