Elite Dangerous is the Largest Empty Sandbox Ever Made

Well, is that good enough for you Cosmo? Response from the devs acknowledging your concerns and admitting they can do better. Don't think you will get better than that.
Oh but it *can* get better - actually *doing* better.
Not just admitting "we are not perfect". Not like it happened first time over these years anyway. If its rather won't go past just apologies yet again, this would be rather sad.

Thanks for response anyway Dale. It must be rather hard being on the brunt of annoyed crowd.

A lot of valid points and things that have been brought up in the past before, but that doesn't make it any less relevant or valid as feedback goes.

These comments were limited but let's not go down the route of "another of these threads," "oh, another white knight defending FD," or "it's just a bunch of whinging" folks. It's not especially constructive and just derails things unnecessarily.

The volume of sand, or lack thereof as far as the feedback on this and the reddit thread goes, is something I see comments about a lot. There's not much I can comment on it just yet but I thought it prudent to drop in and at least acknowledge it. We see it a bunch, and while I'm not always in agreement, it's hard to really deny people's perceptions of it... both sides of the argument make a good case for their side. I can't say that this will be resolved completely because that's a bit of a stretch when a lot of it is also down to what people want at the individual level. That said I am hopeful that future updates in the Beyond updates and (for lack of a better word) beyond will go a long way to address many people's umbrage with ED.

I appreciate that 2.4 wasn't well received (which the reddit thread was talking about.) We said from the very beginning that it was a different way of doing things. Criticism is an opportunity to learn, so this is what we will continue to do. Feedback is gathered regularly so as we move forward we will keep a note of what aspects worked and which parts received the harshest reception to help inform future content releases. We're immensely proud of what we've done but humble enough to learn and do better every time.

Thanks for responding. Elite Dangerous has expanded and improved in many ways during the last 3 years. I still have faith that Elite Dangerous will get better with a deep sandbox that offers more emergent gameplay and player agency to mold and control their own things in the galaxy. We can only hope for the best.

On 2: No, that's definitely too big. It should be a small tent that can be set up as research, mining or fortified camp.

How should they handle outposts for 3 million players?
You limit the number of outposts allowed in a system, wrap it around "lore" if you want. These outposts are then generated by the client when someone enters it. It's just additional assets to load up.

And we should have the ability to buy an appartement in stations. It should also only be visible for people in the same instance.
Apartments need to happen. :)

If outposts don't work for you; what about "buildings" on a station? The station will be on the outside, acting as a headquarters. You can pay to advertise your group/company (both when entering the station and whilst inside the hanger).
Buildings can be upgraded (on the inside); the lobby is accessible by any Commanders; and we can walk around it, see what the group has to offer. Sign up. Or see if they are looking for Freelance CMDR's for certain jobs.

Different types of offices cost different types of money.
So really upmarket player groups with lots of money; could have a sexy lobby:

I feel like FDev is still creating the sandbox, the underlying structure on which the future of this game will rest.

There is no denying that it is remarkable. And I'm all for them improving on that and making sure that is the best possible now and into the future.

However, by the time they get around to putting more work into the actual gaming aspect of Elite, (i.e. things to do in this immense and beautiful galaxy, as well as tools for players to do their own things with) I'm afraid they will not grab, or hold on to, many players.

i'll tell you another thing Frontier should be immensely proud of: their community managers :)
I still don't know how i feel about 2.4 yet (afterall, the whole thing is still very much "in progress", although some of the points made in this conversation are indeed fairly reasonable), but reading a post like this one gives me much hope for the future.

keep up the great job and thanks again for this post (i'm just sorry i can only give you 1 single rep for this).

But it still needs to be communicated to the client which requires that the stations are present on the server.

Well this sounds like your average generic standard MMO, but I think I wouldn't mind it once the other stuff is done (so maybe in 6-8 years?).

How is it related?

How is that related?

As long as you can murder other cmdrs, this game works as intended. I dont see any issues with it, still login every day, extract some nacl and enjoying myself.

Yesterday I murdered a viper cmdr 3 times becsuse he couldn't understand that the thargoid poaching is illegal and hunting season is over. I had to do my part since I am RP as thargoid park ranger in the CG.

You have to create your own content, dont expect the game to do it for you.

Obsidian Ant's latest video has one of the best comments ever about Elite Dangerous:

Fdev built one of the largest sandbox's in video game history.. then? when it came time to put sand into it? They just built some kiddie theme park rides that offer the same experience over and over. Thargoids are just another theme park. You get on the ride.. see everything there is.. Than there is nothing left but to get on that ride again..... It makes sense for World of Warcraft.. you pay a monthly subscription and Blizzard has 200-300 full time developers building new rides.. In Elite? It wastes limited developer time.. hurts the game.. and ultimately doesn't add any sand to the box.

If there isn't Sand put in the box for Players to actually mold, change and influence themselves.. In an innovative and bold way.. This game will just fall off into obscurity.

It's the saddest part about Elite when you understand how the game works. It's the largest empty sandbox ever made that is full of kiddie rides with no depth or imagination.. In a Game "Galaxy" concept built and based on the idea of depth and imagination. Quite a paradox? Just give players the "Sand" That is all the Developers should be spending their time on. Instead you get CQC, Multicrew, Thargoids, CG's. Placing stations instead of letting players build them.... It's madness.

Link to the subreddit.

P.S. the comment was made by someone else below the video.

The sandbox is filled with sand, at least in populated space. The sand are the factions. The shape of the galaxy is molded by our collective actions as players of the game. You can do this consciously and grow factions, increase the space of a superpower, or liberate rares, close black markets, etc. etc.

There is so much depth missed in the game because the background sim is too background...
