Elite Dangerous Issue Report - 07/09/2021

Hey Bruce,

Great, thanks for the update. Looks like things are coming on well, excited for update 7.

One thing though, the top 20 list appears to have missed out issue 6 related to automated accounts being used (shown below). This is an issue which is very close to a lot of people's hearts and spoils a lot of gameplay for BGS and Powerplay players. A lot of us out here would really appreciate hearing what steps you guys are taking on this issue.

Many thanks

5. Limited Gameplay During Apex Shuttle Rides - the upcoming Apex Redirect feature should resolve much of the frustrations that gave rise to this issue, so it will be closed with Update 7.
That's not exactly fixing it.
There is no gameplay during shuttle ride. How about an inflight entertainment system? modern airliners 1000 years ago already had them.
Or a "fade to black (Go to Sleep)" and fast forward to the last 30 seconds just before landing.

The issue with botting is that it's fairly obvious when it's going on, but as the bots fly in private groups or solo, players can't report specific accounts as violating the ToS. FDev has to do the detective work. Those of us closely watching systems where bots have been can point FDev in the right direction, but they need to reach out and do something concrete about it.

Human players don't fly the same numbers of spaceships in the same systems doing the same things every day for months on end. Bots do. Bear in mind that the majority if not all of people who recognise that botting is going on and want it stopped are are PPers and Faction supporters, who pay close attention to such things.

It doesn't really bother me that some people for some reason don't believe in bots... I think that's a naïve position to take these days, seeing how commonplace neural network tools are and how sophisticated scripted behaviours can be. In the end though it doesn't matter what anyone believes, bots are real and the players want them to be stopped.

Have to say though apart from all that I'm having a blast with Odyssey and an glad to see that performance improvements are coming with Patch 7, ground CZ FPS improvements are the most important thing. I'm sick of playing in ground CZs in potato mode considering how great Odyssey looks in regular mode.

Well, yeah why not indeed. But that would mean a new feature request, not a bug or actual issue to track and fix. It should not be even present in the issue tracker to start with. Either way potential new features compete with each other since there is a limited amount of available resources to do them with. I´d much rather have new SRVs or on foot Thargoid combat than a mini game in Apex, for example, but I dont think I can can add an issue to the issue tracker with those.

It's amazing to me that with all the issues we have with the current build, that the community feels like this ^ is a few votes shy of the Top Ten. :ROFLMAO: 🤷‍♂️

Also - and maybe this isn't the place to ask - but, regarding the "botting" issue...maybe it's just not happening? I don't know a whole lot about BGS, admittedly, but maybe FDev are monitoring the situation and aren't finding evidence? I'm currently embroiled in a bit of hubbub and the group with which I am working has been loosely accused of "botting" but I can assure you that we are not. So maybe it's just not happening?
This is your "maybe", not FD's. If they would've left the issue on its 6 place as it is on the list and mark it as "investigating" or whatever something else, that would've been fair. But its not the first time FD have a poor choice of how to deal with things when it comes to expectations and communication management. Like when they advertised the game as "finished" product and here we are today waiting for patch 7 and 8 to get closer to what was supposed to be on May. Its also a choice of how people take all of this, patience and understanding or not, its just sad the fact that the community's reaction to these kind of things are marked as 'toxic' for highlighting something that, again, FD treated in a shallow way. "Always unhappy" player base comes from these kind of things. I have learned to take games with a pinch of salt, and take things as they come, but that doesnt excuse their way of dealing with their own product problems.

Well the issue report itself is quite weird - you took a taxi, what gameplay did you expect?!
I expected the taxi driver to want to evade incoming fire somehow (including "dump the passenger, f*ck this sh*t (lovely forum censoring there), get me out of here"), and not to hold me hostage when the outside temperature is uncomfortable. The core problem isn't that the ride is boring; it's that this doesn't serve to integrate it in the world.

That one seems to be the only issue that doesn't have the green tick on it - what does that stand for again, 'confirmed'/'acknowledged'?

1. Problems With Lighting And Illumination - this issue is due to be closed with Update 7 as general issues with lighting have been resolved. If you experience any further lighting related issues, please create new issues on the tracker for each specific instance.

It saddens me to see the lighting and illumination being closed and marked as fixed.

Setting the gamma to the middle of the bar, then alternatively loading Horizons and Odyssey will make obvious that gamma still has issues in Odyssey.

  • In EDO, setting the gamma slider as advised (to make barely visible the leftmost Elite picture) will reveal lighting and illumination Issues, like certain scenery too bright (white station / concourse interiors, certain white cockpits too bright, certain generic scenes too bright if the sun is too bright, certain stars too bright)
  • in EDO, setting the gamma slider on the middle (ignoring the recommended setting) - will generaly make EDO too dark, but at least the white heavy scenery will be bearable.
  • in Horizons, setting the gamma slider as advises (coincidentally, it right in the middle and always been there since i started to play Elite) - will result in a generally well lit scenery, no matter the circumstances (the only exception is certain illumination scenarios that can make white dashboard for Cutter a bit way to bright)

however, let's see how it goes in Update 7

good thing that they're getting the attention but I dont like how the entire process has essentially boiled down to those Highschool popularity contests known as prom
I'm not sure that it has.

- quite a few of the fixes listed in the recent Dev Update as being part of Update 7 don't have that many votes: most of them only have 1-2 bars and aren't on the top 20 list

- the prioritisation order for fixes even within the top 20 isn't all that close to the voting order

- as a quick glance over the rest of the thread will show, one of the issues with the highest vote count (and the one with the most organised campaigning for it) isn't even included in the summary. Whether that's a deliberate attempt to avoid the question or a result of a failure of the Acknowledgement process is a little hard to say at this stage [1].

I do think that it makes sense for Frontier to prioritise higher-voted bugs for talking about them, since those are the ones there's more widespread interest in, but that they're correct not to weight it too heavily when ordering the fixes.

[1] Most people seem to be concluding "deliberate"; I'm going for process failure on the grounds that the consequences of it actually being deliberate are so obvious and such bad PR I can't imagine anyone actually signing that off ... whereas a process failure in this bug tracker is basically situation normal.

Either way, they need to get on with addressing it.

I think it's worth pointing out that "fixed" means it's coming in the next patch, not that they're saying that it's already been fixed in the live version, Re:gamma issues. I believe a report for a bug that's been resolved in the live version since before the last patch will be marked as invalid or expired.

It's worth pointing out that Fdev will be resolving many issues that aren't on the top 20 list, and the list reflects the community's interests, not FDev's.

One of the top voted issues in the issue tracker is the one about automation in powerplay/BGS. It was voted by a big part of the PP/BGS community and they declined to even mention the issue despite it being near 4th place because they don't want to talk about it, because they have no intentions of adressing the issue.

I guess they rolled it in with the "more telemetry required for simpits" issue ... 185 votes for "simpits" err, yeah ... right!

Seriously tho, you have highlighted something quite suspect here. I genuinely thought they were literally just exporting the top 20 (I mean, if I were FD showcasing the top 20 issues there's actually a few on the list that I might have chosen to, ahem, gloss over if I were them) so I find it quite shocking that they skipped that "automated accounts" issue. Hadn't realised you could sort the confirmed list on number of votes ... VERY interesting!

But we need more Alec Turner screenshots in the supercruise stream, that will solve the problem. I'm super done with this

Happy to oblige!

Oh wait, you did mean screenshots OF Alec Turner right?

Edit

That one seems to be the only issue that doesn't have the green tick on it - what does that stand for again, 'confirmed'/'acknowledged'?

Well spotted!

Some issues are more equal than others :D

The problem is botting requires PvE changes and I belatedly hope FD are aware of this and in the meeting they had regards Powerplay actually came to a decision.

I really had hoped the dev update would go into these longer term (even after all this time) goals to at least give people hope things will change. But its always asking a question and then that question visits...
