ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

It’s really that simple: No VR support, no purchase!

For the sake of my mental health, I’ll assume that they simply forgot to add the VR tag at the Steam page.

Under this assumption, I’ll say:
  • Awesome new planetary surface update! Looks great!
  • Yeah! Atmospheric planets! (Even if just lifeless rocks ...)
  • Interesting: No mentioning or showing of ship interiors. I’ll stay interested in future dev blogs and more information.

But all of this is meaningless, if FDev drops VR support ...

Watch the trailer with headphones on, holy Christ! There are no words to adequately describe how amazing the new sounds are. The quality is like that of a blockbuster movie. Hopefully this is what makes it into the game.
It's very pretty.

But it's empty. The mocap is good, the sound is fine, but there's not that much stuff running around. "Oh lookie- a landed ship, let's nod at each other and cut to logo!"

Nothing happens. How many tons of cargo could a person carry, if an SRV can carry a generous TWO?

I want to walk around 3 Billion year old ruins 60000 LY from Sol, for starters.
I want to walk or float around derelict alien space stations/buildings.
I fear what we'll get is walking around EXACTLY what's shown in the teaser, and literally nothing else.
But I'll remain cautiously optimistic that there will be more to it than that...

As much as I'm excited for that, we can already do it in Star Citizen. I'll buy the expansion and give it a go, but it'll take a lot to get me back to Elite over SC. But if you get rid (or better, make it an option) of the Menu Simulator aspect, I'd be tempted :)

Will odessey support VR?

No idea. At this point its all speculation.

But if it doesn't, don't worry, VR players will still be able to play Vanilla and Horizons.
And this bit of info might explain as to why not.

I mean, Frontier's interest is to attract new costumers, not to pander to a portion of its playing community.

Many VR players will drop out of the game if its confirmed, and that is sad.
But chances are that they will gain WAY more players that simply don't care about VR.

Its sad to say, but at this point, with those numbers, VR for gaming is pretty much dead.

Not even Alyx could save it, pretty sure ED wont either.

It will definitely be optional. There will be new kinds of missions you can only get on foot inside facilities, but FPS combat is completely an optional part. You don't even have to own a gun
Which is fine as long as they don't give you some kind of ship-enhancing reward for anything to do with this expansion. They have not said that will be the case, so it's still possible this will be "fake optional" as the other user put it.

That's the whole issue, in practice Engineering from Horizons is not optional, even though you can play the game without it you will be destroyed outside of solo quickly

Please tell me all the FPS stuff is optional. And I mean truly optional, not "fake optional" like engineering is. There are many of us who really do not want to go within a light year of touching a shooting game.
FPS doesn't necessarily mean Elite turns into CoD. There are a lot of things that one could do on foot that could be fun but don't involve shooting, for example one could go on EVA to repair damage to your hull, or collect plant samples from a planet. I think a statement from FDev here would be useful.

Hoping to soon see details about ship and station interiors, VR support, explorable planet types, updated NPC interactions, and of course any new ships and vehicle types.

I think we can't walk around inside ships with this expansion. I hope I'm wrong though. It'll probably be outposts, settlements, hubs and player built bases.

Nonsense, VR adoption rate on Steam just overtook 4k. Loads of new hardware in development too.

And by the way, I'm pretty sure much more than 2% of Elite players have VR.

I suspect they won't say much for a while. They want to see the reaction from the player base (things being said in this thread for instance), and release only minimal information over time.

Now we can all complain about how there's nothing to do walking around on these planets, just like all the Star Citizen players!
Good point,
Although I have played this game from the start and I can be cynical of Dev decisions that are made sometimes.
I feel and hope that this may have been the point from a long time ago, look at the detail that went into the crew entrances a while ago they begged to be climbed.

Star Citizen as a concept is phenomenal but as a practicality it Leapt before it Looked

To sum it up, I hope the structure for this has been gradually put into the code in previous updates and the game is ready for it.
If so I will pledge to update my 9 year old home built PC for it. (Some bits are newer e.g SSD)
Regards
Pug
