Elite Dangerous (Steam) just set a new All Time record for concurrent CMDRs, beating previous highest in Nov 2015

no one issued an event to rally or join
ROTFL 😂. Technically no one issued anything. In practice the message was pretty clear:

unannounced message said:
Want a carrier? Go work your ARX off in Borann, and maybe you can afford to keep a carrier. Oh also, Borann's gone after the update, so chop chop chap, better get that LTD crackin'!

EDIT: not to mention FDev sale on steam.

Umm, i personally feel strongly about considering both an "in game event" and "anticipation/preparation for an upcoming patch" to be the same thing.
🤷‍♂️ I can see indeed that you may not be too impressed by this update, but if you do not really see the difference between a CM event and an actual development update then we will have to agree to disagree.

The general consensus is that steam numbers are meaningless and a decoy to be quoted, but it should be interesting to see how this trend continues over time. If it keeps elite off its historical 4-6k that would be something.

What happened on the 27th march? That did it.

I, for one, do not thing they are meaningless at all. It is true they only show a fraction of the total player base so absolute numbers can not be concluded from there, but that fraction is probably significant enough (some estimates put it around a 3rd of the total) to indicate similar trends and behaviour across all platforms.

Regarding steam concurrency levels going forward, I suspect it will behave very similar to how it has behaved to date. Betas and releases lead to increases and lull periods in between updates lead to troughs etc. That seesaw cycle has pretty much been the standard since launch, so I would not expect anything too different. I would imagine following the FC update concurrency will drop again and into the summer, only to pick up most likely whenever the new era drops or its beta (if any) drops. etc.

Hey i dont feel strongly on the data (depends on how you use it), but how many times does it take getting told by a white knight that they're rubbish before you have to say it back for that reason alone?

If i had to guess, pending frontier getting a massive win or disappointment with the beta going forward, there would be people left grinding if it was realistic to own one. That could count for some permanent buff.

But why would anyone play a crappy game and beta?

There's a core element of the game you can drawn your own line around that will always work.

Its the support of the game in spirit and practice thats crappy.

So if you wanted a way though there still is one there. Just pretend you're truck simulator in space and its great. Screenshot generator works too i guess.

I think it includes a balancing act between arx for game patches to individual measure, and also how much sunken cost baggage you have from when the support was actually good..

That's not my experience from playing the past week or more.

What is your experience? Better or worse than expected? Just in case im having an above average time laser mining. The last credit grind i actually remember was going from.. vulture to python i think. That 50 million was fierce.. i did bubble transport missions for ages. I had other ships im sure, but i remember than once i got my first python i never flew the vulture ever again.

I vaguely remember that in the dark 25 modular terminals time people did just that - running two accounts and transferring excess of whatever hops fdev required them to hop through for engineers (bloody cigars and tea incl.). Had a colleague who was flying for Grom and he told me that they have "special accounts" who are tasked with just that. It was used to enable pp players with engineers as quickly as possible. What I don't know if it was operated on one computer and I'm too lazy to check.
I bet not many people did that though. I'm sure some still do that, but it will likely be minimal.

Well due to real life issues I've not played much in the past 12 months or more, and when I had tried playing I couldn't muster the effort to play and literally stared at the screen before turning it off.

I'd always made the effort to mainly do stuff I liked doing rather than playing for credits. When credits were on offer I did them for a bit but if I got bored I stopped e.g. Robigo. As such I've never found grinding an issue because fun != grind. Plus I always tried to log off to give myself something to do next time I played, rather than just getting bored and switching off.

Anyhow - I started by buying a Python, fitting one out for LTD mining and then learning how as I couldnt really remember from my very brief attempts in the past. I enjoyed it, nice and relaxing although despite reading the guides I only slowly got the knack of spotting the deep core asteroids and then blowing them up correctly. I didn't make that much money, probably < 100m(although I only had 175m when I started!), and it did take me some time mainly as I avoided Borann and tried to find some other spots on my own. I decided to go back to my home system, Wyrd, and do some BGS related stuff helping my faction whilst remembering that Engineering was quite enjoyable thanks to the ability to choose missions with rewards and the fact lots of useful stuff was droping in USSs. I wasnt looking for anything in particular, just playing and seeing what came up. I even did some combat which is unusual for me as Im not very good :) I then had one of the inbox missions to gather data at a high security jail, which was great fun but ultimately impossible for my SRV skills! I did some mat collecting on a few planets, ran some standard delivery and chained missions plus some data delivery and salvage missions in my 615ms Cobra - run away Brave Sir Robin :). Next up Im going to find a remote low population system with no players in it and a faction I can support and fool around with the BGS.

I think anyone buying Elite for the first time or returning after a longer tme (probably longer than me) will find tonnes of stuff to do . There's still lots for me to do and I've played probably knocking on 1000 hours. That said I get how if you'd played a lot then there's a lack of stuff to do if you dont find the core activities fun.

Curious, isn't it?
Concurrent numbers go up on steam, understandably as many more people are at home and filling their time playing games... No great shakes.

It is a positive for every game that gets increased numbers, of course...

So here we get the usual: Those who have been unhappy with the game for any length of time are still unhappy and berate the increase... Those who are even vaguely positive about the game are happy enough that others are playing.

Beggars the question, really... "why are those disenfranchised and negative still here when they could be playing something else and content?" - It's no good asking me, logic doesn't appear to apply here...

Aye, reading some of the comments it seems like they're going through 5 stages of grief after seeing the playerbase resurgence. So much aversion to CMDRs playing Elite Dangerous because they want to 🤷‍♂️

It has been explained numerous times, also in this thread:
  • We're still hoping for the kickstarter-promised things, so we're checking on here. Hope dies last.
  • Recent carrier commotion again painfully proves (to us at least) that fdev is disconnected from its own game gives us a platform to vent
  • we have been told numerous times that "steam charts don't count" by the Whities, so it's karma time.
Btw. this argument about steam users is flawed in my humble opinion. When I can choose steam I choose steam for convenience and fret if I can't. All of my gaming friends prefer steam as it's an established gaming library. Of course it's anecdotal evidence, but so is saying that non-steam users are legion. FDev only knows.
