News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

Really, guys... There have been many, many thousands of games released through Steam, from many, many hundreds of developers and publishers.

There has never, ever been a backlash against releasing a game on Steam because generating keys is free for the devs and activating those keys takes no revenue away from then, neither from past, present or future purchases. It simply does not work that way.
Valve only takes a percentage from sales made on the Steam store, and that's why every gamer out there knows that you should buy directly from the developer when the developer makes sure that your purchase also gets activated on Steam, which is what FD is trying to tell us.

By generating a Steam key all future purchases made with your Frontier account will also be associated with your Steam account. This won't affect how much you pay for the game or for paint jobs, but sticking with the EliteDangerous.com store remains the best way to support ongoing development with 100 percent of your money on future purchases. We especially appreciate it when you buy direct from us, but we're happy for you to play how and where you like. Just enjoy the game, and fly safe Commanders!

Well it looks like some people are getting confused, fair enough; the wording isn't too great and English is not everyone's first language.

So I want to try and explain what (in my eyes) the Developers are saying here:

To me, this is saying that a purchase made on the Frontier store for Elite Dangerous will be linked to Steam. I believe this means that if say a DLC came out for Elite: Dangerous and that DLC was available on both Steam and the Frontier store then if you make it on the Frontier store then they get 100% of the money and it will appear on Steam that you have it in your library, both to stop you accidentally buying it again and also to tell the Steam client that it will need to download it into the Steam versions directory.

Feel free to tell me if you think I'm wrong. Even I'm not too sure and even though I was one of those people a few months ago initially asking for a Steam key I'd rather go without if it means all my money goes to Frontier.

But I highly doubt Valve will be able to take a portion of Elite: Dangerous earning no matter where it is bought, if Valve funded it then it'd be a whole different story but it's not like Valve have any direct association with the Frontier store to even make any claim for money.

That is just not the case here. You are contradicting Ed when he has clearly intimated otherwise.

Ummm, I know that you were referring to the original post. But I was referring to the purchases information which I backed up with a quote from Ed.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. Here is how I see it.
There is the original post. For the most part, it was clear and cut.
Then there was SushiCW's legitimate request for clarification, and Ed's murky response creating more need for clarification. Followed by moderators, who more than likely have access to the same amount of information as the public, snowballing the problem.
So,the only real concrete information we have is still the original post.

The question is just if he really meant that or not since it seems to conflict with not only earlier statements but also general reason. It seems to be a misunderstanding to me.

The meaning of what's been said is clear in the context of the OP and the question that was asked. Link your Steam Account => future purchases, even through Frontier's store, will have Frontier pay Valve in some way. Unless Edward comes out and contradicts this, there is little room for misunderstanding here.

It seems logical as well, if Frontier's deal with Valve involves retroactively generating Steam keys for FDev shop accounts. Game data, future updates/addons/DLCs/etc. will probably be downloaded from the Steam servers. Valve will want some form of payment.

I thought this had been clarified?

That's the exact opposite of a clarification. Maybe Lewis didn't notice the "FD" in SushiCW's sentence, or maybe Lewis is just plain wrong.

But just wait a while if you guys aren't sure. When they're not so busy trying to deal with the store being down, they'll hopefully come here and settle any doubts... this time for real!

I was able to connect my account to steam but no option to claim a key appeared. I go to the partner key tab and it just says, "Your account is linked to steam."Is this a known issue or am I doing something wrong?

It really sucks that Valve seem to put a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) on you guys (Frontier), which prevents you from directly stating that Steam keys mean part of future ED profits always go to Valve. So you end up playing verbal games, which confuses non-English speakers (and frankly a lot of English speakers too).

Ed probably doesn't know, which is why he isn't replying. The Steam launch was a complete surprise here, the follow-up on what would happen about keys was a complete non-answer for the longest time that rumbled on.

The community manager might not have all the info, and it's not a knock against Ed personally, just how it is sometimes. The community will try to fill in the gaps but until Michael or someone clarifies it, this is basically back to 'Which football team do you support - the plucky underdog maker of Disneyland Kinect Adventures or the evil Valve supervillian?'.

Basically, Hanlon's razor rather than assume NDAs etc.

Maybe this format is how accounts will work on console if you are a kickstarter backer. I will get the game free on PS4 with a PSN code, then future purchases, even if on frontier store a cut will go to Sony. But this will only apply if I haven't already linked my account to Steam which is a 3rd party that won't mix contractually with Sony (or Microsoft). If this is the case we need to be told in order to not link our accounts to steam and wait for the console version to be released.

Is Elite: Dangerous even coming to PS4? I know it is on Xbox.

No pal, there are some problems with key generation, seemsfully. That's the same case for me and some others, too...

being told from MY ACCOUNT that my account is linked to steam, i have not received a key, how can this be possible ?

this is happening to me too, and to A LOT OF people too, but i don't read anything about this, just people talking about the profits of buy things in a place or other.

But the fact is WE CAN'T TAKE THE KEY, SOMETHING IS WRONG

Thanks for injecting some commons sense ricmadeira

Okay! As long as I didn't mess it up. I am sure they will get it sorted. Thanks!

Steam Keygen is usually in batches. As a pure guess, Frontier probably underestimated the number of keys needed and have ran out. Back to the Valve dumpster to dive for some more, and then fill the store hopper back up. :)

No, no, no... The OP is saying that any future FD store purchases also apply to Steam, and so that you should have no qualms about purchasing the stuff here because that's more beneficial for them than you buying your stuff there. He's just not very clear in his language. :(

Valve doesn't care about that logic. Their logic is they want more users on their database, and more users logging in daily to play games on their service; they can then lure them into spending money on Steam. That's it! That's how they became pretty much a monopoly while still doing right by both users and developers.

NDA? ROFL. Why would there be an NDA? It is strange how people think Valve should just give away their service for free. They are a company in business to make money like any other including Frontier. They provide a service that both consumers and developers want. What is with all the Valve hate?
1. Why mock someone, if you agree with their conclusion?
2. I'm not claiming to be shocked about the existance of an NDA, I'm shocked about what that NDA appears to prevent (i.e. them admitting that Valve will take a cut of profit from Frontier's OWN store when you buy something using an ED account which is now linked with Steam).

Same problem. Not sure where to go from here.
