News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

Ok, this is easy to bypass then. Any non Ingame merchandise is purchased through a 2nd store account not linked to the game.

And how did this not get changed by the legal team prior to going in effect? This would mean if you bought a gift for someone that due to the store login it gets charged. It's odd they would even need access to the account. Are they bypassing the launcher through steam?

But they did sell 120k copies through them, so that's makes some money back that might not have happened before.

Edit. The above posts sheds light. I was only checking steams side, not ed,heh. I must have been typing at the same time. But the solution is the same for the most part. If the store change works then... Well... Anyway, carry on. Nothing to see here.

I really didn't want to possibly cause this whole discussion to prolong, but ...

Given steam.elitedangerous.com exists, is a 'steam' store, but also looks like it's hosted by FD then "any future purchases on the FD store are affected by this" could be interpreted as only applying to steam.elitedangerous.com and not store.elitedangerous.com. Not having fully linked my accounts (I generated the key, but have not redeemed it on Steam, and checking my profile on the latter it doesn't list ED as a game I have) I can't comment as to if trying to use store.elitedangerous.com will always redirect to steam.elitedangerous.com.
So, Ed, MB, someone, could you 100% explicitly state what happens with respect to Valve having a cut of the money for future ED-related purchases if:

  1. Someone bought ED not via steam originally
  2. That account holder then generated a steam key on store.elitedangerous.com
  3. That account holder then registered that key with Steam.
  4. That account holder than attempts to purchase something via store.elitedangerous.com, not steam.elitedangerous.com

Thankyou.

Oh, and now I check, the two hostnames do resolve differently:

Code:
$ host store.elitedangerous.comstore.elitedangerous.com has address 79.125.111.215
store.elitedangerous.com has address 176.34.244.215
store.elitedangerous.com has address 46.51.178.194
$ host steam.elitedangerous.com
steam.elitedangerous.com is an alias for www.elitedangerous.com.
www.elitedangerous.com has address 176.34.127.47
www.elitedangerous.com has address 54.246.83.62
Both are hosted on AWS, whereas the single IP I get for steampowered.com is on Akamai.

One of the stores is directly accessible from their website as well as Frontier's launcher, the other is purely for Steam's launcher. It's that direct link on elitedangerous.com that Ed is referring to when he says "FD's store".
It could be interpreted in the way you're thinking but why would the distinction have been made if that was the case?

I know for sure I'm going to regret asking this, but I haven't read all the posts so I may have missed the relevant posts but what's the big deal about who gets paid what when you buy something from the store (for the sake of argument (bad choice of phrase?) assuming the store refers to wherever you happen to wish to buy Elite Dangerous related items (digital or otherwise)?

If you register your steam key, then either Valve get their cut or they don't. Valve are cool with it; FD are cool with it; the purchaser gets charged the same regardless which sounds good to me.
Regardless of whether I understand, agree or even care about who gets what, Valve and FD will split my money as they have already agreed.

I've got to be missing something, but I just can't see it.

The debate has been mostly about whether Valve get a cut of all FD store purchases when a user has linked their account. This was subsequently confirmed by Ed to be the case. Once you link your account, regardless of where/what you buy for Elite, Valve take their cut.

You are right that FD have obviously come to an arrangement that they are ok with, but they're not as big a company so they'd obviously prefer you to keep buying through/from them exclusively so that they get more funds for development.

A lot of people are preferring not to link their accounts for this reason, to support the devs in the best way possible.

Hi,

I did as instructed but I cannot find the "Partner Keys" link from my store Account Dashboard, am I doing something wrong here? Can anybody help? Thanks!

ok i been away for a bit im not seeing the partner key link to get my ED key for steam

Hi,

I did as instructed but I cannot find the "Partner Keys" link from my store Account Dashboard, am I doing something wrong here? Can anybody help? Thanks!

Also not seeing any Partner Keys link.

Clear browser cache and cookies, or try a different browser. I had the same issue, tried a different browser and it worked.

Thank you for the steam key Frontier. I however will not be allowing valve to take a cut of all my purchases made with you in the future.

If you guys however change your view on microtransactions and start selling things for cash that aren't vanity items.... You bet your skippy little ass I'll let Steam take their cut off anything I buy from then on, assuming I can even justify giving you money at that point. I doubt that will happen though. ;)

I was looking forward to getting a key but seeing as even if I purchase upgrades via Frontier Valve takes a cut then I'm not willing to do that, even if it's a small cut FD need every penny.

Yeah. I'm thinking the same thing. I kind of feel bad actually for buying this game for a couple friends of mine using steam instead of FD's store page.
--[Break]--
However, for those that want an alternative. I was able to get the shortcut put into my steam library. It plays from there and I'm actually able to use the in-game steam browser while playing (You know, pressing shift+tab), without Alt+tab'ing out to chat on steam or whatever (just be careful you don't have thrusters set to Tab, lol).
However,my profile says that I'm only ever playing the Elite Launcher menu; but whatever, your friends will learn soon enough what that actually means. Also, you still can't write reviews on the steam store page.

I don't like how this any' could be interpreted. A little more clarification would be great.

Does this include purchases of Paint Jobs as well as physical merch stuff?
I would like to activate ED through Steam. But not, if you have to pay money to Valve for me buying a paint job or a mug directly from your official store.

Or is this restricted only to game addons? That would be fine for me then, as I have the lifetime expansion pass and would never require to buy expansions for the game.

Sorry, should've been clear on this one too! This doesn't apply to physical merchandise. Valve don't touch on that, only in-game content.

Thank you! Been hoping for clarification on that, was holding off on getting my key because I didn't want valve to get any of the money I spend on merchandise as I have an expansion pass and the only skin I need, I won't be buying anything they can take money from :)
