News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

If frontier decide to give another Premium for current user, i will get that, then some skins, and hopefully by then will have some dolls or dice for cockpit too. Then will transfer by account to steam. I am patient commander, and exploration has made me even more patient. :D :D

From what I've read so far what I take is this:
-All players can generate the Steam key with no worries;
-Steam will only get money if you buy the game from Steam Store.
Generate the key, make a second install or copy the files and DO NOT buy anything in Steam Store. Keep buying in FD store because the accounts are linked so everything you buy in FD Store will reflect in Steam. I was a Steam player until the glorious day that I bought ED back in February. Since then haven't played anything else. I've already generated my Steam Key but haven't downloaded because ED is not the kind of game that you want messages poping up when your in heavy combat. All said KEEP BUYING IN FD STORE. Give the money to developers, I only regret not being a backer myself.

No, unfortunately incorrect.

As Ed stated previously, if you generate a Steam key, Steam then get a percentage of the amount you bought the game for. Even if you bought it through the Frontier store, or even kick starter originally. Then all subsesquent purchases you make in the Frontier store, Steam still get their percentage.

Im sorry but doesn't make any sense!! FD is giving them money for games already sold on FD store??:eek:

This has gone perfectly well for me. Thank you :)

Though, my purchases will always be directly with FD.

Valve do not generate the Steam keys for free.

Effectively by generating the Steam Key your purchase counts as a 3rd party sale, but still Valve's. The same as if you go into a game store and buy a Steam game, that store hands over the money to Valve (minus their mark-up). Valve then give a percentage over to the developer, but keep their cut. So in this case, Frontier are the developer, publisher and merchant. So they get all of that, but the man sstill must be paid. So for every Steam key generated, Frontier have to give Valve their part of it.

Maybe is a question that someone already asked but if i redeem the Key for Steam Have I to redownload all the game from scratch or will automatically transferred on the same folder of the old ED?

I'm pretty sure that Valve don't take a percentage of any of your previous purchases relating to Elite, but will take a percentage of any future purchases via Steam or the FD store (apart from physical merch) from point of linking your account to Steam.

I haven't tried this personally, but other people in the thread seem to suggest that this post explains how to save yourself having to download the game again..

Now that FD has got into bed with Steam and will be letting them have their cut (some 30-40% apparently) does this make the likelyhood that FD will actually make a client that will run under SteamOS / Ubunutu?

As it would seem to be the next logical step as the steam Linux store would have Elite plastered all over it.

As for me I am staying away from Steam and when I kickstarted Pillars of Eternity I went with the GOG option where I get windows/Linux and Mac options all DRM free.

Well this really sucks then!!I was under the impression that Steam would only get money if we bought stuff on their store!! Well I generated my key under that assumption and !! Still can't play via Steam because it says to check my e-mail for the verification code and after a day still nothing!! About what you said Pup, I used that method and worked, it still had to verify some files but took about 2 minutes!

I am not generating a Steam key purely because I'd rather FD get my monies rather than a cut going to Steam.

TBH, I'm getting a little wary (and weary) of Steam...

I just linked my steam account without reading the first post through fully (because I didn't realise I needed to read it fully!), and now regret it. I read the first paragraph and took it to mean that buying stuff through steam would give them a cut, so I should stick to buying stuff through the elite store, not that ANY purchase from now on would go through steam.
You Frontier guys messed up, there needs to be a big warning on the steam link page of the store saying "Warning: If you do this a large portion of all future purchases will go to steam!"
Well, too late now, I assume there's no way to unlink.

You should at least change the part in the first post that says "...but sticking with the EliteDangerous.com store..." to "...but choosing to NOT generate a steam key...". That's the part that was least clear to me and made me think it was ok. :(

I did generate a key for steam just because the FD Launcher wasnt downloading the1.3update at all, now with steam everything works great I dont see the problem.
If you buy something fro FD store will automatically saved on the game account.
So whats the problem I dont understand?

Steam download [HELP]

I'm trying to show steam the game, but it always tries to download it again. I've renamed the folder to Elite Dangerous, pasted inside the steam library folder, inside common, and nothing happened. He eventually showed "discovering existing files" but gave up and started downloading again.

My internet is bad, so it would take 3 or 4 hours to download the game again, any leads on how to make steam see ED?

Because anything you buy in the future, steam will take 30%-40% of it of the money for themselves, regardless of which store you got it from, IIRC. So steam will be taking a lot of well needed finances away from an independent company that needs to pay staff, pay bills and invest to continue developing this game.

If 100,000 people use their steam key and all future expansions cost £20, surface landing and walking around (not including skins and everything else from the store), that is potentially £1,200,000 that FD development have lost, that could have been used to make this game even better

Really? Thats frontiers problem though not the consumer. The customer is always right. So they need to stop throwing percentages out there. If it was that big of a problem then they should've never released the game on steam. But they did so they don't get to about people wanting to put elite with the rest of there games since frontier initially agreed to having the game on steam.

That is the biggest misconception on the face of planet. The customer is not always right, that is just an excuse for people to be whiney little cry babies to get what they want.

FD probably did not know that was going to sell the game on steam, but even then, it does not justify the way people have behaved.

I have not read or heard a single convincing argument to justify why people should be given a free steam key.

I think it is sad and pathetic.
