News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

Hahaha this is ' halarious. I know a whole bunch of you were ones screaming from the rooftops about demanding your Steamkey - but now we find out that the minute you claim it Frontier loose 30% on all future sales regardless of if its via their store or not.

.

whilst I for one was never one of the ones demanding anything, I do not see the conflict here....... it is possible to ask politely for a key, and appreciate getting one but then choose not to accept it if you feel the cost to them is high.

Also I think it is unlikely those who were getting in a real strop will be having any pause in activating their key.

besides.... all of that aside, lets say for 1 second I WAS one of the people demanding a key, beyond asking nicely (I wasnt as i said), its like this...... I may strongly argue for the right of 2 men to get married and have exactly the same rights as a man and a woman...... its doesn't mean I want to marry a bloke myself ;) :p

Once you link your account to Steam then they will be the retailer for all future game add-on purchases for that account, and they take their retailer portion of the sale.

Damn, well that's my decision made. I think the wording should be made clearer in the original post, that fact is not clear.

If I get a steam key I assume all future skins and items bought in the store purely go to Frontier?
(A way of settling my conscience ;))

Not according to the comments above. If you get the steam key Valve will take a cut of all future purchases on that account no matter what store is used.

If you want FD to get 100% of the future purchases you might make then don't get that steam key.

So i will stay with FD store.

I do not need steam. I want all my cash from my orders give to FD. I can stream game by steam, link game to library, show on status what i am playing without a steam key.

Developer is making the game, so developer should EARN, not a broker.

Dont touch that key people, it can burn.

I would have hoped to buy things like skins, mugs, t-shirts etc from the zaonce store and give Frontier all the money but if valve take a cut from all that, I'll stay non-steam.

Yes, it should be made much more clear...with big red letters!

Same goes for the store itself in case the wording is equally vague there...can't check if that is the case though since it's flooded.

Slow clap to all of you. Ugh this community.

I for one never wanted a steam key and I won't ever be claiming one.

And yet many posts here are stating that knowing what we know as of today about Valve's cut, they will not be taking a steam key. To me that speaks volumes of awesome sauce about the Elite community.

I am comfortable with converting my account to a Steam-based one given the £500 I stumped up during the Kickstarter campaign. Others in the same position will make their own decisions - it's everyone's prerogative to do as they see fit.

One question that does need clarifying, and it's already been asked earlier in the thread: will beta access still be possible through Steam? It is for other games, will it still be so for Elite?

Yeah, that's a fair interpretation. We don't think of it as a tax though, just part of working with third party retailers.

Really?
So even if I buy from the official ED store Valve still takes 30%?
I do like Steam and have many games in my account, but that percentage is unacceptable for me in this case.
I want FD to make as much money as possible to be able to continue the development of this awesome spacesim.

If this is how it is I will not activate my key. It would go against my personal interest, which is seeing this game become truly epic.

OK. One case is clear. We do not get steam key.

So second. How to unlink FD account from Steam ? (someone would like to do that) :D

Yes, huge red flashing bold letters, underlined with double neon stripes.

Again, FD need to make this much clearer (for their own benefit really)

whilst game skins and DLC I can see steam taking a cut, I cant see any reason why they should have a cut of any meat space items. IF I buy a Disney game from steam, they sure as heck wont get a cut of any toys i buy from the disney store!.

Just thought about something and I hope (assume) FD have done the same.

If Valve now will take a cut of all future purchases of cosmetics and expansions in the Elite Store then there is no longer a reason to keep these things exclusive to their store either. They should now be able to sell these on Steam too for people who already have access that way.

I have a big issue buying digital content from a provider that can't keep their digital store up, their bread and butter depends on that thing and right now it's been hosed for nearly 2 hours. Forget steam keys for a moment, imagine if all you wanted to do right now is buy the game? your experience would be extremely TERRIBLE. Wan't a skin for that ship? nope.

Any smart web team would've anticipated this load coming a mile away and responded to it appropriately or better yet set a system up that responded to this load automatically.

This is why steam is good, we don't wait hours attempting to login to it. We used to 12 years ago, but it's a mature platform now. If steam store crashed like this, they'd lose a tonne of customer faith, let a lone publisher faith and there'd be write ups of it all over the place.
