Elite is not Doomed

offline single-player mode says hi.
November 2014 says hi :)

I have a footage recording of the "but muh offline" complainers:

:ROFLMAO:

3m copies of Elite Dangerous sold since, and 4.3m franchise copies - not bad at all

For me it's not the game, nor the 2020 stuff, and not even the bugs.

It's the failure by Frontier to get a grip on hacks and botting.

Still playing, though.

It actually feels a bit strange our previous dark periods were filled with rage but i think the 2020 announcement, plus the fact weve had a convincing leak leaving us mostly certain of whats coming, means that im getting more of a sense of disinterest than rage.

Previously it has been quiet from fdev and games doomed posts have taken over the forum now fdev have almost entirely given up on talking to the elite community but the posts are more, well, dull. No games doomed posts, no open letters just fading interest. Fdev seem comfortable theyll make enough this year on plan zoo and will ramp up with us next year when they want our money again. And most of us will forget the summer of discontent (well no content) and demand they take our credit cards.
FDev do talk to the Elite community, just not on these forums much anymore. Check Reddit, Twitter, and Twitch, they chat plenty with us :)

Are the forums doomed? 😯

PFS? Pirst Ferson Shooter? :unsure::giggle:

And btw, the future of Elite Dangerous isn't dark... it's beige...
Aye, beige days indeed. First they'll take our colors! Th-then, our ships! When will the madness end!?! Oh the humanity!

Seriously though, people need to chill with the "I didn't ask for this" routine regarding alleged content. If Frontier think that space legs is a worthwhile investment then who am I to complain? While I'd rather see things like powerplay, engineering, etc get a balance pass and rework; people just aren't clamoring for Power Play 2.0 or a return to swift n' brutal dogfighting.

I suppose 'plenty' is a relative term, I don't see most of that because I don't visit or use them regularly, I find your citations are regularly useful as I've stated before. I read & post here because it's the official forum for the game, I'm not a social media type nor a particularly social person.

As far as I'm concerned this traditionally was and should remain the primary source for information - any official statements elsewhere should be published here on their official forums too, ideally they would be published here & other places would link back to here.

Elite currently lives from the casual crowd who are statisfied with good looking visuals and a screenshot generator. However, those of us who value gameplay and balancing are obviously unstatisfied.

Ah, now, what fallacy is this? Is this the no true scotsman one? I'm not sure.

You do realize what you said? You said people who are happy with the game do not value gameplay and balance and only like the game becuase of the visuals. While at the same time, mentally categorizing those who don't enjoy it as being on the "right" side of what people want.

Overall a pretty poor and fallacious argument.

Maybe it's because SC and NMS have raised the bar in terms of expectations.

That's the same NMS that was universally panned as DOA before Hello Games went dark for 12 months or more and then brought out an exceptionally well received update(s) that led to gamers (bizarrely) paying for a billboard to say thanks.

So I guess if your point is games can improve and change fairly dramatically and that gamers are fickle creatures you'd be right for once.

SC? Whassat?

Sure they can, where there's a desire and resources to do so. Time will tell if Elite has either, or will continue to be little more than a simplistic skinner box and mediocre wallpaper generator designed to sell in-game cosmetics.

But i have to admit that, correct me if i am wrong, the general feeling of disillusionment that permeates this forum, Facebook threads, Reddit, YT comments, and so on is pretty unprecedented in how widespread it is.

Yes, there have always been doomsayers. But in the few years I've been hanging out here (lurking at first, and then as a player and active poster) I don't remember a period this dark.

Of course, this is the product of the "2020 announcement", plus the radio silence from Frontier (quieter than they usually are on all fronts).

I remember another period of negativity (about a year ago? Maybe more) that prompted either Zac or Dale (cant remember who) to write a damage control post, discussing the negative feedback and giving some hints about the future. Does someone remember the post I'm referring to?

Recently Paige had explained to us that the community team does not develop the game, therefore even if they spend their time doing interviews and "featured commanders" (initiatives of dubious utility) this doesn't slow down the development process. Well, with all due respect, no biowaste Sherlock, we can understand this ourselves. But if I can smell the disillusionment in the air, why can't they? Nobody is expecting a "hey, just kidding, we're actually dropping spacelegs next week!", but maybe some dialogue would help nonetheless.
I haven't noticed anything different. I see a mixture of praise, then the naysayer accusing the people praising of being a white knight and try to bully them away from the forums and other social media outlets so they can have their own little echo chamber and make it look like the game is doomed.

From what I have seen, most are extremely happy with most of the game, but are unhappy with small parts of the game. It just that people generally go on the forums and social media to complain. Most people don't go on forums and social media to praise.

The end is not nigh?

The end is 1.5 year far.
The leak of legs has been around for sometimes now and people expectations are growing. Even though many (most, according to the mega survey) players wants also/instead atmospheric planets.
FDEV did nothing to damp growing speculations and expectations throughout the communities, so they hopefully know what they're doing...

I would be very curious to see the people reactions if today FDEV makes an announcement about the 2020 contents and none of that is in their list, and when someone asks about legs and atmospheric planets they reply: these are things that we really want to put in the game but they are still far from our current roadmap.

So yes, unless thai fail to introduce what people mostly expect from the game, Elite is not doomed.

Concerning playing the game, this is my darkest period. I have 2 commanders. One near the core for exploration and one in the bubble for business.
The first one is tired of wandering because he can discover nothing. There are no clues and no path to follow. Even if the galaxy is procedural generated in the end exploration is all about random luck and this is not engaging.
The second commander is tired of playing the same missions over and over again.
I'm quite sure that FDEV could do something for both of them before 2020, but I'm not sure they will for the moment.

So instead of rage quitting, I've simply quit and now playing NMS to be prepared for the VR update.

Interesting reading through this thread, I missed it yesterday...

Two things I think on this, firstly : as others have said, forums do tend towards the negative. I cannot believe people play a game for thousands of hours which they don't like at least a bit.

Secondly: I think Fdev are well aware of the complaints. The approach they've taken is to change track and go for a very large update but accepting it takes longer to put that together. As a player I'm fine with this although my expectations are high as to what it will be.

For me the game remains amongst my absolute favourites. I can't find the YouTube video but there was a very good comparison of the game as it was released and the game now, charting the development. Watching something like that really showed just how much it has all changed. I think quite a few people would be surprised
