Elite on Console is dead - so why are FDev delaying Odyssey improvements for it?

Indeed. So why not even plan to release it on the fastest selling console generation ever?
Odd.
Why bother? There is no point throwing even more money for Development costs into a tiny minority of the console market... (didn't someone quote only 8 million sold (because they are in short supply - unless that is about to change radically) against an installed base of over 140 million PS4, and how many of those 8 million would even sniff at Odyssey / ED? - what the Xbox situation is I have no idea, is it similar?)

Best to just let it die, surely?

I'm sorry, I don't have a blurry stuttering mess.

I'd be interested to know what screen or TV you are running this on, Elite Dangerous hands down in the blurriest looking game on my PS5 by a long margin. Running on a large 4K TV (which is what the PlayStation 5 is designed for) really shows it up.

Sure, its a subjective view with whats "good" and whats "bad" looking but, graphically the fidelity of Elite on my PS5 doesn't match any other game I have installed be they native PS5 games or games running in BC mode of the PS4 Pro. I can't think of any other game I run that is shackled to 1080p.

The game will run on the current-gen consoles, but only in backwards compatibility mode, meaning any improvements available are limited to an unlocked frame rate and improved SSD R/W times. For example, playing Elite or Odyssey on the PS5 will offer a maximum resolution of 1080p.
Factually incorrect. Quality mode on console gives 4K output.

Quality should be available in backwards compatibility mode on the Series X and PS5, since the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X support it.

Partially correct.
XB One X was powerful enough to be able to run ED in 4k, quality mode. So XB Series X will run ED in compatibility mode in 4k, quality mode
That was not the case for PS4 Pro - it only received Quality mode in 1080p. So PS5 will run ED in compatibility mode, 1080p, quality mode.

That's the source of grief for PS5 owners. PS4 pro being so crap and not being able to run ED in 4k

Edit: it's understandable, but it's not really FDev's fault that PS4 Pro was not powerful enough to run ED in 4k

It’s always been an uncomfortable game to play on PS4, the struggles we’ve had, for example go to any Nav Beacon, then go to the ‘contacts’ panel and watch the frame rate dive below 10, every. single. time.

Same for CZ’s, trying to select targets is pretty much a game of cat and mouse with the list of ships.

Then there’s ‘rubber dinghy rapids’ lagging with SLF fighters and the net code which seems to run on the worst that’s in your instance, despite having a really good 50-75mbps average fibre optic connection.

But still, I’ve put up with it and continued on regardless, when I recently got the PC version and saw how much better it’s running, I could see just how bad the PS4 Pro version really is, and it’s a damn shame.

It’s poorly optimised for the PS4 system.

Plenty of other games are able to run at 4k on PS4 pro, so what makes ED special against games like Red Dead Redemption 2? Honestly, this just looks like another symptom of the poor optimisation on PS.

What's the point of comparing ED to RDR2?
Especially when RDR2 development costs were 3-4 times more *() than what ED was able to put into FD accounts in the 6-7 years since launch, cosmetics included.

Better compare the hardware of PS4 Pro and the one for XB One X - and you'll see the later have 50% more ram and 50% more processing power and 50% more bandwidth. than the former.
They had to work with whatever PS and XB was able to offer. Hence 4k on XB One X and 1080p on PS4 Pro. 🤷‍♂️

*(development plus marketing costs were apparently upto 500+ millions USD)

Oh dear...

Factually correct.

Max Res is 1080p on PS5. It looks terrible... It's shameful from FDev really. No wonder the community team don't play on PS5

Wow...FD have really boxed themselves into a corner.

Horrendous Odyssey launch on PC, no VR support for Odyssey, no next gen console plans for Odyssey. I know some of this has been announced a while ago but the confirmation of these facts does not paint a rosy picture.

I'm not suggesting DOOOOM, but right now it wouldn't surprise me if FD decide to pull the plug on ED. Optimise Odyssey, fix the bugs, release on last gen consoles and release whatever additional content they had planned and then leave it on 'end of life' maintenance mode until the community stop playing. Probably adds up to 1 more year of active dev support for ED.

They have more valuable franchises that are far less complex to develop, JWE and JWE2, Planet Zoo and in 2023, F1 and a Warhammer game. Purely from a finance and resource point of view, I'd seriously question the long term position of ED.

Just conjecture and I hope I'm wrong...

Lies! No 4k on any Playstation from ED

Odd.
I think they have had the PS5 dev kit for a year already and play their game planning cards very close to their chest when talking about future plans, especially consoles and VR. Just my thoughts. Especialy with an in-house engine and 4 games to juggle. We are last to know and for good reasons.

I assume you've never played Elite in 4K

and having done so, switched over to your PS5 - on the same monitor - and been greeted with a blurry, unstable low-res affair that looks like a PS3 game in comparison and crashes just for fun.
I'm not saying that it wouldn't look much better in 4k. If you see a better looking woman than your girlfriend or wife, do you think she is now ugly? Of course not. The game looks fine on my PS5. Yes I would like it if we're in 4k......but it's not and it looks fine as is.....it didn't all of a sudden become ugly.

I thought that young Arthur mentioned the reason; it has to run on old gen consoles because it's a DLC for a current game on said old console. Could it be a legal issue?
Also, why not develop an enhanced version in parallel? Resources and lack thereof?
It's not a legal issue. There are games that dropped support for old-gen consoles and only updated the current gen going forward. E.g. Diablo 3 once dropped support for PS3 and X360 and only moved forward with PS4 and XOne.

It's a business decision. And due to the delay most probably a bad one, as end of this year the old consoles will become very quickly less and less relevant.

So what we're saying is, the latest Xbox is better than the latest Sony? Many years ago when I was looking for a console and tossing up between the original Xbox and PS2, the specs for the Xbox were just that much better so I went with it. Then having seen some PS2 games being played I was glad I went with the Microsoft product rather than Sony as the quality was definitely inferior. I don't know much about the new consoles but just saying, it wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft have stayed ahead of the game in the console department.

No, Frontier favors Microsoft over Sony. I don't think anyone ever claimed xbox was better than Playstation and were actually serious or didn't die from embarrassment from the resulting laughter
