Elite / Frontier Elite Plus

Commander @Zieman

Only if you would know how much it means to me that someone follows...

The wall of lonely tirades in a corner of forgotten forums isn't exactly what I'd envision about for this game, and it's future, but a commander can do only what a commander can do. Archangels can do that much more.

Next speedrun WR will be named for your honor. (Currently passive-aggressively practicing for it, despite of recent mood of sentimentalism). 103756 Hits, 3420566.7 Cr.

Your thread has over 28 thousand views, so I reckon it’s safe to say there are a few readers of your adventures.

Personally, I read (and watch) your Elite Plus adventures thinking that you’re either a complete genius, completely mad, or a mad genius 😂

Warmth goes through my veins for your words. :)

The point is what is 'the State of the Game' for future generations of new players finding the hidden side of PC Elite Plus. How it is for those who will come after our generation will be gone. Do they need to scramble through all difficulties by themselves, or can they just look at the facts and decide: "I can do better", and endure and 'suffer' all that follows. They may then think something hazy about "those lunatic ancient forerunners", but they will also overperform us in ways we cannot even fathom. They will rudely and bluntly point out our shortcomings, and they will display a level of play we couldn't even imagine. Our records are simply a side note of the history for them. They will ridicule our set nomenclature and used tactics, they will critic our 'archaic' measurements of "skill". They will have thousands of live followers. They will compete, Hardcore. Modding community will be involved...

Until then, I try to go where no man has ever gone, doing it proudly, with honesty and humility, but also with determination this game has not yet seen within it's sparse player-base.

A day when someone comes public with adequate proofs how to play Elite Plus (PC), will be a great day of Joy for me.

Wow, thanks.
I'll have a pint for that. :) 🍻

The New 'Speedrun to ELITE' World Record is now 1h 47m 35secs by Commander McZieman at Riedquat with 1012 kills, using half 'Viper tactics' at Leesti, half 'Traditional tactics' at Riedquat. 4th attempt of day. Hangover.

The first ever confirmed Sub-2h speedrun to Elite promotion.

0:00:00 Fresh Jameson at Lave with Fore Pulse Laser, 3 missiles, and 100 Credits
0:00:10 Selling missile and Fore Pulse Laser, buying Fuel Scoop
0:00:25 Hyperspace jump to Leesti
0:02:00 Promotion to 'Mostly Harmless' (3 hits), buying 4 missiles and fuel
0:03:43 Promotion to 'Poor' (8 hits), buying Cargo Bay Extension and 3 missiles
0:06:03 Promotion to 'Average' (11 hits), Buying ECM System and 4 missiles
0:08:24 Buying Extra Energy Unit and 4 missiles
0:11:42 Promotion to 'Above Average' (21 hits), selling Cargo Bay Extension, and buying Aft Mining Laser and 4 missiles
0:12:09 Starting to grinder using 'Viper tactics'
0:54:45 Hyperspace jump to Diso for resetting Leesti
0:55:48 Hyperspace jump to Leesti
0:57:09 Promotion to 'Deadly' (554 hits), buying fuel and 2 missiles, and switching Aft Mining Laser to Fore Mining Laser
0:57:55 Hyperspace jump to Riedquat, starting the grinder using 'Traditional tactics' in the anarchic system
1:47:35 Promotion to 'ELITE' (1012 hits) with New World Record time, buying Tribbles, fuel, missile, and Cargo Bay Extension
1:48:16 Saving the game as McZieman.cdr

The previous WR was broken with incredibly ridiculous time save of 18 minutes 29 seconds. Full speedrun using only 'Viper tactics' at Leesti would easily save further 5-10 minutes. At least.

The brand new Elite Commander McZieman will be the acting doctor of xenobiology researching the ecology and population growth curve of Tribbles species (as function of time), but these efforts and scientific 'paper' (to be published here) must wait to yet undetermined day of a near future.

Research process will be joyful without usual stress and pressures of Elite Plus speedrunning, as the scientist can just float idle at a peaceful system (such as Leesti or Diso). Only thing the researcher must avoid is to go too close of star of the chosen site of xenobiologic study.

Tribbles is the only known thing in a normal space that can impact to the speed of DosBOX simulated Elite Plus reality. Many interesting questions will be answered about this spacefaring species after the successfully completed ecologic studies of population dynamics of Tribbles. :)

There is just as much as anybody can do. We simply know that it is impossible "to force" community for any game.

However, I still persistently attempt it, because nobody else seems to even try, as the game is "too fast", "ridiculous old space shooter", "one of the worst versions of Elite", "not worth to spend any time", etc.

https://howlongtobeat.com/forum?thread=431&page=185&jump=to#post79285

Ultimately, it's weird that the version of the game where it is possible legitimately become the ELITE faster than in any other version of the classical game, thus being THE FASTEST platform in the existence for, according the Wikipedia:
'The game's title derives from one of the player's goals of raising their combat rating to the exalted heights of "Elite"'
it is completely weird that people does not thrive for it, and actually try to demonstrate the limits of that "Exalted heights" and what it means in practice.

PC Elite Plus is the game where you can achieve THE WORLD RECORD time for ELITE across and over all of dozens of versions of the game.

The game is available for free in multitude of abandonware sites.

Awesome, congrat!s (y)

And thanks, feeling humbly honoured right now. 🙃

That's nice. And deserved.

I made some calculations concerning theoretical minimum times achievable in a speedrun using only Viper tactics (tailgunning Polices at Leesti) from stats of Commander McZieman's flight and record. When it took approx. 12 minutes to get necessary equipment accumulating 21 hits when doing that, and jump to Diso (to reset Leesti Dodec) happened at 57 minutes in the run. There was total of 554 kills at approx 55 minutes mark, in which 533 accumulated in some 43 minutes of Viper killing, this means that if extrapolating missing kills (446) to 1000 hits using same pace and rhythm the total time required for full Viper tactics run with similar 12 minutes start would be about 36 minutes...

12 mins for the start and getting equipment
79 minutes for killing Vipers
1 minute for jumping to Diso and docking
=
92 minutes -> 1h 32mins

Optimizing the start to under 10 Minutes (requires near optimal ship and loot RNG), slight lowering the time needed at Leesti station for selling and buying things, and getting better routine and rhythm of grind of Vipers (optimizing the time for shield regeneration and laser cooling, between rounds of Viper killings) could possibly cut some 3 to 5 minutes from the total time.

In other words, it seems currently very plausible to become Elite under one and half hours of game play, but after smoothing these things out it seems to be very hard to save more time from the speedrun without some new paradigm, abuse of a glitch, etc. Optimal start that would waste few minutes more for getting Escape Capsule at the beginning, would make possible to end a run at Leesti, but it isn't clear does that save much time compared to the jump to Diso and just docking the station as accumulating enough money for the capsule likely takes more time than that. Elite Plus speedruns to Elite Any% of a future seems to form to be just these kind tedious, mindless, repetitive grinders in which their starts' overall RNG, and achieved "skill" and "rhythm" of grind determine the future record. The Future of this category seems rather bleak, to be honest. Only positive thing in these prospects is that the lower the time goes, more repeatable an effort will be.

About 1h 25mins seems to be currently the hard limit I cannot imagine to be achieved anytime soon, and going under 1h 30mins limit isn't that trivial either, thought clearly possible.

Let's see how things unfold. Nearly all magic around an achievement is already disappeared. It is simply question of mundane (and possibly time consuming) optimizing the tedious pattern of repetition and wrapping it down to a minimal sized minigrip labeled as "Kyytappo" ('Viper Kill" in Finnish).. :D

But how F******* cool it would to make it to near absolute limits that cannot be easily broken without some kind of a revolution in the speedrunning paradigm of Elite Plus. Right on Commanders!

To reach Elite during only one play session (and under two hours at that) would be an amazing feat - it took me several months to achieve the same, though admittedly with the much slower version on the ZX Spectrum.

I doubt the creators of the game ever envisaged such a thing being possible 😁

Elite Plus is really E-Lite Minus what comes to hit count requirements to reach different combat ratings. 'Deadly' requires only 155 kills, and Elite 1000 or more. Becoming 'Elite' in Elite Plus itself is a task that doesn't pose any kind challenge at all due lowered level of "exalted heights" of the rating, at least if a player bother to spend enough time to get accustomed to "faster than normal to classical Elites" - game speeds. Only reasonable means to enhance the value and meaning of the rating are:

1. to speedrun to it as fast as possible
2. to play enough long to be able to get multiple Elite promotions, i.e. to reach the milestone of hit counter overflow +1000 kills
3. to voluntarily set the game's 'Newtonian' control model ON (would be ridiculously difficult achievement to play until 'Elite' that way)
4. to learn to shoot using only side lasers for the rating
5. to combine 1, 3 and 4 for the successful attempt of 1000+ Kills (only Autistic Spatial Savant fixated to the task could possibly control Cobra MkIII efficiently in such efforts)
6. to play and get the Elite promotion (speedrun) with 6400 or more kills (typical requirement for Elite rating in almost every version of classic Elites) during one session and one go with newbie Jameson without dying during the process (requires some 10-12 hours of playing). Preferably without saving the game amidst the attempt.
7. to artificially increasing the Elite Plus game playing speed and adapting to that

"Normal" speedrun seems to be the most easy approach, but the flock of EP commanders hobbying with the game doesn't seem to be too large or eager to publish (and verify) their Elite speedrun achievements. I'd be happy to watch, check, verify, and confirm new Elite commanders to the already existing category (Elite, Any%, from the start of the game) if proper proofs (footage) is delivered. If it takes for example 4 or 5 hours, it is good enough to be included to Speedrun.com leader boards.

(So, come on fellow Commanders! Make my day! :D)

Programmer Chris Sawyer didn't imagine that in his version of the game, the combat rating 'Elite' could be achieved under 2 hours. That is fairly clear and obvious even without asking. :D

Some info from years ago if interested in Elite Plus. It was an advancement in the game
where we moved on past wire frame graphics. Many like me still love and support it.
Probably one the best site about the game. Are you the admin of the site? Mr. George Hooper? Are those Elite Plus mission savegames in the file Elpmiss.zip from the game you personally once played? If so, I must thank you and give proper credits for them as I used them to make 'Elite Plus Missions Compilation' Youtube-video as my own mission savegames are made only after 'urgent messages', and thus they were unsuitable for the compilation.

There was readme.txt file included within elpmiss.zip -file and there was email address elite@hooplatec.com in it. I just counted 1+1...

Thank you, thank you, thank you! :)

Yes I'm the Admin and I played the game to get the missions. I keep the site up for all Elite fans.

Enjoy
Oh. Nice to meet you Sir. It's honor. Your site has been there from the day one I ever made google search related to the game, and it is still there.

Your ancient era Combat-guide is little bit outdated though, but things tends to evolve over decades. Also, it seems you also vastly overestimate the difficulty of becoming Elite in this particular version. :D

Excerpt from: http://www.ffeartpage.com/elitep.htm
Obtaining the rank of ELITE is a goal that many try for, but few succeed. Those who make it are rewarded with the following graphic. Note that there is something missing in this graphic, which will appear when you play the game, and become ELITE! Note that since the appearance of this website in 1997, no one has ever e-mailed me with the missing information. Will you be the first?

Head of Elite eagle is missing from the badge, but is somewhat compensated by the reflection of word 'optimum' on the helmet visor. 'Hanger 18' is missing too, oh dear. :D

For me to be considered "good", a gaming day of Elite Plus must include at least 1000 or more accumulated hit points. The feat takes some 3 hours when making compromise between optimal accumulation pace of more kills and extra money at anarchic system.

"Excellent" gaming day usually produce much more hits and money, and very often it has included also a new speedrun to 'Elite' WR. Currently training for next attempt, which will be the first full 'Viper tactics' run at Leesti for cutting out some extra 15 minutes from the current record of 1h 47mins 35secs. Only after that the process of optimising can really start.

"Awesome" gaming day can then be for example 10-15 hours of game playing (in game), over 100000 Credits and thousands of hit points. Often it also include some kind of milestone to be broken.

I would change that first sentence to "Obtaining the rank of ELITE is a goal that would be easy to achieve, but few even bother to try. Everyone and their aunts can easily succeed". :D

Nothoria's Quick notes for Jamesons
FAQ: How to become Elite in PC Elite Plus?

1. At Lave, sell your Fore Pulse Laser and one missile. Buy Fuel scoop. Jump to Leesti.
2. Use missiles for ships from point blank range and scoop cargo.
3. Dock. Sell your loot and buy 4 missiles and Cargo Bay Extension. Go out to make more some commerce raiding.
4. Dock. Sell loot and buy Equipment. Repeat.
5. Continue commerce raiding at least until you have Fore Mining Laser (just as good as Military laser, but a lot cheaper), ECM-System, and Extra Energy Unit. You can do entire equipping of your ship from within Leesti's Station shield perimeter practically with zero risk. You can even achieve ELITE status that way, but it is unnecessarily time consuming way to the deed.
6. Jump to Riedquat and shoot everything you can while flying towards the station. For docking you can just spend 50Cr if manual docking feels someway too risky and difficult to handle. You can skip whole segment of approach using Escape Capsule (if purchased at Leesti), minimizing all risks of flying in the anarchy.
7. Continue grinding within Riedquat Station's shield perimeter until 1000 or more hit points for 'Elite' Promotion. Nobody will shoot you as long as you stay within it and don't shoot the station.
8. Becoming Elite in Elite Plus doesn't have to include any kind risks at all (or challenges for the matter), and even far below average pilots can achieve the feat within a time span of a day.

Of course, this isn't what 'ELITE' rating was intended to mean.

Saturday Night Fever

Archangel Perkele (Main game Commander, Archangel 'Nothoria Infama' of multiple aliases) just reached to the milestone of 3.5 million Credits with the total of 105984 Hit Points (40448 by the hit counter, second round after the overflow). This weekend has been rather good for the progression of Nothoria's career curriculum. Things have been gone smoothly despite of above average beer consumption levels.

Currently keeping a recycling center and second hand shop at DIATIN, G7, Anarchy, Tech Level 5, Average Agriculture. Market stocks are slowly filling.
The next 60K promotion is coming closer. Slowly but surely.

It's tedious and boring, but because the subroutine 'Nothoria Infama' is compartmentalized and hard formatted to my nervo-system, I can relatively easily override frustrations. Routine doesn't prevent other simultaneous activities such as drinking beer, listening Counter-Strike Narration, watching TV, and talking with my fiancee while transforming assaulting Asps, Ferdelances, Cobras, and Morays to Alloys and other resources. I even degenerated to a slave trader as I felt they cannot handle with all that junk and goods without extra work force in the system's Coriolis...

Only things that really disrupted my routines were the sudden realization I was grinding using full throttle, and how autonomous subconsciousness made my hand to hit F9 and just exploded the energy bomb in a near death situation where the last energy bank was under 50%. It didn't go through any intellectual, economical, or conscious process or consideration. It just happened me realizing what happened only after the fact.

The most annoying thing was/is/ will be that I cannot un-see how Elite Plus Moray Starboats are flying backwards after I recently learned about the fact.

Let's see does the tomorrow's hangover allow some extra effort of ironarseness to break that pesky Speedrun WR, talked above. I don't promise anything this time.

Right on Commanders! o7

Hey all fellow Commanders, please forgive me if I sound sometimes self-centered arsehole, and a tone of my voice is somehow blunt and "too direct", or "Elitist" (pun intended).

Its because I play the game practically in every set of moods. Certain level of "Elitism" is also appropriate in this particular context as far as I can see, I'm the BEST guy actively playing this game when it comes to practical skills of playing it. That of course is valid statement only as long as someone else will take a task and show how it can be played better. And in that case I'll immediately recognize such skill as my EP nervo-system subroutine starts immediately "play" and mirror in the game of mind when seeing someone other playing the game.

These things are (or should be) what are talked in conjunction of the REAL meaning of 'ELITE' rating of PC Elite Plus, where the closest equivalent of measurable 'Eliteness' to other classical Elite version's Elite Promotion occurs when you actually lose your rating.

Bleeding sorries. All embracing apologies. And good wishes to all. It's damn easy to be the best if being also only one. Sigh. :(

The game needs competition for the needs of (R)evolution of its game play, and that can be ONLY achieved by playing it. By many. Together sharing their knowledge, routines, methods, preferred tactics, details of observations, goals, feelings, evaluations, bits of trivia, etc. Its not rocket science, but it could be.

It should be.

I’m afraid I’ll not be joining you in your flight through the Elite Plus firmament - for one thing my reactions are far too slow to cope with what I’ve seen in your videos 😅

The other reason is that I don’t have the nostalgic drive to try it out - when I got a PC it was all about FE2 & Doom. Once I’ve reached Elite in FFE (probably sometime in 2022), I’m toying with the idea of going back to BBC Elite and playing what I wasn’t rich enough to play back in the day - I started out on the truncated Acorn Electron version.

It’s a pity you haven’t any wingmen to compare tactics with - just the backseat passengers like me along for the ride 👍
