Fiction Elite : Reclamation

Finished it!

Great plot. Interesting characters, especially Dalk. I love that you've clearly played the game and the descriptions of flying the ships all fit.

Regarding the ending...

I think Luko is harsh on Kahina at the end. She's not responsible for the actions of her father, and if she had done nothing the planet would have ended up ruled by Vargo. And you certainly *can* own a planet: that's what happens when you homestead it by cultivating it and making it pleasant for humans.

I lost a bit of respect for Kahina when she handed over control to a minor character and going off gallivanting around the galaxy. Sure, she didn't want to rule the planet, but what about a sense of duty and making up for her family's past wrongs? Such an ending might have been more bittersweet: I want to go with you, Hassan, but I can't. Maybe we will meet again one day.

As for Hassan, he seemed unduly rewarded for his frankly bumbling from one situation to the next, and general cowardice and lack of moral fortitude. I can't forgive him for bashing Kahina on the head towards the end, even if he did ultimately rescue her.

All of which sounds like I am having a go, but it's actually great that I can spend time thinking about all that. It's a morally interesting novel. Also, possible sequels abound!

I'll do an Amazon review soon.

haven't read any of the books yet, waiting to get them all in hardback before I read them.

Wow, that's pretty amazing considering how spot on the composition is with the characters :)

drew was kind enough to give me a brief description on who was who, was then a matter of placing them in order of importance. it currently doing well over on the tinternet.

should have been the official book cover:rolleyes:

Great stuff Amigacooke. Thanks for the honest review, what particular idioms jumped out as not being in use by 3300?

Finally found one, page 40'

‘Stop blathering then. Go!’

'blather' seems pretty niche in the 21st centuary, by the 34th?

Only my opinion of course :)

I don't think a single word constitutes an idiom, but I do get your meaning. However, writers usually choose the words they use to add colour to their text and characters - not necessarily to reflect the change of language over 1300 years (not that it would even be possible).

When it comes to the use of a single word between now and 3300, there's no guessing which words will be completely forgotten and which words experience a revival and become popular again. Most probably, though, the English language will be completely different from what we know today.
