Fiction Elite : Reclamation

Purchased the eBook the other day and I'm about half-way through now. An absolutely awesome read for those even the tiniest bit into Sci-Fi. Kahina is a fantastic character.

Many thanks for the feedback, glad you're enjoying it. :)

I was very conscious during the writing of the story that I wanted to avoid the classic 'goodies' and 'baddies' tropes you often find in SF books. Kahina isn't a very sympathetic character for much of the book and gets some of what she deserves as a result, but the bigger events around her sweep her away from the reasonably comfortable life she has led thus far. She makes some big mistakes (more to come in the second half!) and these have big impact on how she sees herself and others around her.

It's interesting, and very heartening for me, that fans have continued her story via fan-fiction, clearly people found something compelling and fascinating about her. At the various conventions, Kahina has been the character that has been discussed above all others. If and when I get a chance to write a sequel, Kahina will be back!

In the meantime - I have curated the fan-fiction that has been written about Kahina and some of the other characters. It's not official of course, but I've been impressed by the quality and how folks have tried to align the style of their work with mine. You can see it all here:

Despite her flaws, she's a character you admire very quickly for the way in which she interacts with others, especially her family. You can imagine my surprise when *that* happened!

You've done a great job of painting a morally grey universe and a couple of occasions so far I've thought to myself 'hows that any different to the other thing you're done earlier'?

Thank you for taking the time to respond drew. There are so many things I'd like to ask about the book but I wouldn't want to spoil a great read for anyone reading this thread, that'd be a crime. :)

I think I already said somewhere that I really enjoyed your Elite: Reclamation book, but I will repeat it to be sure.
I read a lot of scifi and I think I know what I am talking about if I say it is an excellent book.

She's also Imperial nobility in origin, which is inherently more interesting.

In fact, Imperial perspective is rarer, so when it does come about makes more of a mark.

Feel free to PM me any questions, though the book has been out for 18 months now, so I think this thread is fairly safe in terms of spoilers. There's also a plot summary on the Elite Wiki now, so the story is quite well known! :)

I had a lot of fun painting out the Loren family. I figured that despite all that power and money, it wouldn't be all sweetness and light. Infact, Kahina had a pretty miserable existence up until the point of the story. She had no point to her life, shackled by Imperial tradition and far away from the excitement and opportunity of the coreworlds. All her energies were involved in trying not to get married off at her father's whim, sort of a reverse Pride and Prejudice. ;)

Cheers,

Drew.

I think I'm right in saying my book is the only what that dealt with the Imperials as the central characters. I wanted to give them a bit more depth than the 'bask in their greatness and don't they have the coolest ships' meme you get from the game itself. I saw them as a fundamentally honourable people, but who played games of great political intrigue, where how you do things is often more important than what you do or say. A more old fashioned society, more measured and a contrast from our modern day corporatism and capitalism.

I wanted to see if I could make readers sympathise with Kahina despite the fact she was obviously posh, rich and spoilt at the start. She didn't care for anyone much at the beginning, but learnt the value of friendship and the cost of her own selfish decisions. The woman at the end of the story is not the same one at the start... I hope to give you all more facets of her character if I get a chance to write another Elite book. Here's hoping! :)

Thanks to everyone who's been buying a copy of Elite: Reclamation. It's jumped into one of the 1,000th most popular books on Amazon as a result.

I'm even on the same virtual bookshelf as George R. R. Martin! ;)

I dare say it's only a temporary affair, but I imagine it hasn't done Elite Dangerous any harm either.

Thanks once again - and if you can pen me a review when you're done. I'd very much appreciate it! :)

Rather pleased with this one...

"Absolutely excellent book. One of the things Frontier are poor at is fleshing out the lore outside of the game. Reading this book really gives you a nice sense of that. Pacing is decent, with interesting characters and a solid plot. If you play the games, you should definitely read Reclamation."

Cheers,

Drew.
