Fiction Elite : Reclamation

Yes it was really. Sorry but well...

So I have your ebook. I got it as a Christmas present. I like Science Fiction and Fantasy, but I didn't play Elite when I was young. I do remember going by the computer room and seeing it on the BBC computers. My friend liked it and says the new books are great. But I have a lot of books to read now (time of year and all that).

I joined the forum because of the stories. I'm not really a computer game player, but everyone seems very friendly. Its nice to see writers talking to people here. I've read a few of the websites and there seems to be lots of excitement around everything.

I read a lot and enjoy self-published writers as well the ones from Waterstones, Forbidden Planet and The Works ;). I've not heard of your publisher, but a lot of my favourite books are like that.

Who would you compare your writing too?

I took a browse through the Elite Dangerous Wiki. As you're called 'The Loremaster' is that something you set up? Or did you write things for the game? I guess a bit like Sandro Sammarco, the designer?

Sorry for all the questions!!

Hi Kathryn!

Wow. Lots of questions. :)

First, I'm really pleased to hear you got my book as a present. That's fabulous. Do pass on my thanks to whoever bought it for you. :) Lovely to hear you joined the forum because of the books - that's great!

Whilst I'm one of the original official authors for the game, I do try to play it as often as I can. I've just managed to get a shiny new ship, so rather proud of myself.

Fantastic Books Publishing is a small publisher based in the NE of England, which specialises in SF and Fantasy type stuff. They also have charitable giving as part of their ethos - which is what attracted me to them in the first place.

My writing? Gosh, that's a toughy. I'd like to say I'm a kind of 'Anne McCaffrey' type, but that might be wishful thinking. Certainly I'm a 'character' writer, rather than a literary scholar. My books are all about the people involved and I don't employ clever tricks and techniques, I like my stories to be as accessible as possible - 'page turners' if you like! I like to make my characters very memorable. The lady from my ebook (Kahina, if you haven't met her yet) is rather larger than life and is featured in the game too.

The 'LoreMaster' is very much an unofficial title given to me by folk on this very forum and the various Elite conventions. It's just a bit of fun. I played the original game back in 1984 for years, and have followed the Elite story ever since - I've picked up a wealth of trivia as a result, so I do have something of an encyclopaedic knowledge. I'm also rather more 'advanced in years' than many other folks here! There are plenty of others who could argue the same though. I have been working on some 'Lore' articles to share with the community > www.drewwagar.com/elitelore

I wrote a series of missions for the game, and quite a few Galnet 'news' articles. I'm hoping to write another book at some point too. I don't work for FD, but am contracted to them as a freelance.

Hope that helps. Look forward to hearing what you think of the book! :)

Cheers,

Drew.

Elite Reclamation is now available on Audible. It's the same fantastic audio production as has been available from FBP over the last year, full of Tony Longworth character voice genius (other SF claims include Star Wars and Doctor Who) and features the real sound effects from Elite: Dangerous itself. It's 11 and a half hours of quality storytelling, even if I do say so myself.

It's the perfect accompaniment to long voyages in the void, so leave the faded glory of Lave and the old worlds behind and look to new Frontiers. You won't regret it.

CMDR Firebird has made a great video of his search for secrets in the Formidine Rift using a bit of ED footage and audio from my book 'Elite: Reclamation'... have you been there, CMDRs? If so, did you find anything? "Here be Dragons" ...

It's a very well presented video that adds a lot to the audio narration and the original story. Love this sort of fan produced content. :)

And the mystery of the Formidine Rift is very much out there to be found... ;)

Cheers,

Drew.

Should Salome, Hassan or Cuthrick Delaney be introduced as a contact NPC for CoR or any other minor faction in 2.1, I really hope you have some say in designing their appearance, Drew.

Love the video. Went to the Formidine Rift. The feeling, ah, the feeling. It was unforgettable. The ecstasy, the exaltation, the fear stricken deeply into my heart of finding...
just another region of ordinary procedural generated area of space. Meh. And no dragons, either.

Folks, I'll be on Reddit (probably during May I imagine given on my diary and workload right now) doing an 'AMA' which stands for 'Ask Me Anything'.

That means you'll be able to do literally that, whether it's about Elite (historic and current), the lore, mysteries, characters, all of my books or anything else of course... oh, and what I'm currently working on.

Cheers,

Drew.

Just scanned through this forum. Loved your book, it's been eating at me lately as I try to force my way through the rift in an underpowered old Asp armed to the teeth.

I saw your comment a while back, I was a big fan of Anne McCaffrey's, your styles are definitely similar.

Looking forward to the AMA, I have a ton of questions, some I suspect you won't be able or inclined to answer and .,... ...... .. ...

AMA is looking like the last week in May at the moment. Will confirm shortly. :) I'll do my absolute best to answer questions, but I am under an active NDA with Frontier at the moment, so may have to say 'Sorry!' depending on what is asked. :(

Glad you enjoying the story. My Shadeward series is more akin to the late great Anne McCaffrey (or at least, I've tried to write it more in that fashion than Reclamation). I'm a character writer, and whilst I do go to great length to try to get the technicalities correct, I do try to keep technobabble to a minimum!

Look forward to seeing you on the AMA, CMDR! :)

Cheers,

Drew.

Thanks for that Drew. ED is an amazing game but it's made so much better having this kind of out of game context to help fire the imagination, otherwise it just starts being bit and bobs floating on the screen.

I spend all my time flitting from one system to the next, chatting with locals, scanning old records. Sometimes I find something sufficiently interesting that I blast off without bothering to fill my hold with anything to help pay expenses. Every day I get a little bit closer to where I'm going.
