Engineering is one of the worst elements of any game I've ever played

Another moan about engineering...

I REALLY wish FD would just decide engineers is a monotobous unenjoyable part of the game and remove it entirely. The only reason I'm engineering my ship is because other players are doing it and I don't want to be left behind incapable of competing. It's literally ruining the game for me. I'm trying to get through engineering so I can enjoy playing the game again. That can't be a good thing surely? How is that a good way to execute a game?

"The game is fairly great, let's stick something soul-crushingly boring and repetitive in it so people don't actually enjoy the experience of playing it." Why???

Tbh its a race you've decided to compete in and no one forced you.

I enjoy the engineering even if I ignore most competitive aspects of it.

You can take a fairly generic ship such as the AspX and either turn it into a super-lightweight explorer than can jump 60Ly or you can turn the same ship into a mini-tank which can dust Corvettes.
That range of opportunities, and everything in between, is something I find very enjoyable to tinker with.

What I don't find interesting or enjoyable is that this latest update seems to have turned the entire thing into a giant bloody "coin-push" game, where you just pump in ever larger amounts of mat's before you finally get your result out the other end.

Your opinion about the system doesn't mean it's a It's a good system.

Just like your opinion of the system doesn't mean its a bad one :)

I don't mind the engineering aspect. Sourcing the materials is awful. I can't understand who thought it would be a good element of the game. And the worst of it is you have no choice but to do this if you want to stand a chance in PvP. It's not like your building a base or something. A nice to have but I can ignore it and still enjoy PvP combat etc. I'm forced into playing a game I'm currently hating so I can get through it and get to a game I love. I just hope my patience holds out and I don't lose it with the game for good.

Personally my one and only combat experience in this game was making a Canadian angry during the closed beta phase of the game so I cannot speak to how hard or easy it is to pew pew with engineered modules or not but again its your choice to try and keep up with the Duvals and if the game is making your "angry" then you have a simple solution.

Aaand there it is. The stock response for anyone who dares criticise any part of ED. I paid for the game the same as you. I have every right to want to be able to enjoy it as well. If you don't have constructive contribution then it's best you don't engage in the thread tbh.

Well, not really. Same could be said about any video game. If it's making you angry then it's time to hit the off button and do something else, it's only a video game.

The only part of the game where engineering is a must-have is freeform PvP, where there is a compelling desire to have the best gear to match the hypothetical enemy Cmdr, and the 3.0 changes mean it should be much less of a hassle to get that 'top-tier' gear.

I can understand how a player can become fixated on the progression ladder, but outside of freeform PvP there is no rush. Rather than worrying that your gear isn't the best instead set a minimum standard you want to achieve and consider instead what you want that ship to be able to do :)

Are you deliberately missing the point? Yes, if you're being pedantic no-one forced anyone to do it. But It's obviously not that simple. If I want to play the game (which will involve pvp) I cannot do so without engineering. So basically, you're saying I just shouldn't play the game. So one aspect - gathering materials - is so dull and wide reaching that It's forcing someone like me off the game entirely when there are a number of other elements I enjoy very much. That is not good design.

I don't know what to tell you. Go gather the mats you need or don't. It's your choice.

I just finished criticizing Frontier to a friend in a private message for two equally stupid things they've added/done in 3.0 but I dont feel the need to start a thread about them when others already have.

You never started the thread for a constructive discussion, you started it to whine because you don't like engineers.

I don't particularly like Powerplay but im old enough and ugly enough to understand its a core part of the game that isn't going to disappear simply because I don't like it.

Oh yeah? Tell that to the NPC bulletsponges that make every vanilla gun feel like peashooters.

It's a bad system because, there's really nothing to do but buy and engineer ships, and most of the game play mechanics exist solely to support that activity (srv, engineers, data points, signal sources, mat traders, mission rewards). Take out engineers and there's literally barely anything to do or any reason to do it.

What's the difference between grinding cash to buy bigger/better ships and grinding resources to engineer better mods/weapons?

The game needs progression to keep general interest. Do you expect them to just hand you everything on day 1 and say, "go have fun in pvp"?

There are other games for that, if all you're looking for is an even playing field experience to 1v1 people. ED has an arena, EVE Online has Valkyrie, or you can wait for a thousand years like the rest of us for Star Citizen.

Sounds like this isn't the game for you if you don't enjoy working on progression to improve your gear/stats.

Engineering adds the difficulty slider so many want when up against NPCs. If your particular strength is combat you can skip the progression & just go achieve your goal in a vanilla ship. If your teenage twitch reflexes have long since past but you have time on your side you can buff the biowaste out of your stuff & be a god to NPCs.

I'm fine with this. I'm conscious that if I go out in a vanilla ship & get torn apart I can do some work to get to a point where the game is challenging instead of punishing or a walk in the park.
