Elite / Frontier Every Version of Elite

26 versions? I don't have that many, You must have got all the non-english versions to accomplish that. I have all the USA and U.K. versions including the Nintendo cartridge. It was funny when FFE was released the box was pretty plain in the U.K. but lots of graphics on the USA version.

Anyway I still have them all with some of them still wrapped in cellophane. eBay is a wonderful tool for collectors.

That's Styggron If I remember correctly, Geraldine and myself are the Amiga nutters on here. :D

I've only got a boxed FFE now, and the disks for Frontier on the miggy not sure what happened to the others.

I have all of the original games boxed including the first:)

First one.

I also have the Spectrum version in the attic along with lots of other games from lots of different types of hardware.

That reminds me - last Saturday G-Force in Glasgow (downstairs from Central Station) had the boxed Spectrum version of Elite. I didn't grab it myself for several reasons - primarily me not actually having a spectrum to play it on...

Having owned a Commodore 128, I can advise that there was only ever the specific Commodore C64 version, which you had to switch the C128 to run in C64 Mode. There were only about 2 titles that I am aware of that ran specifically in 128 mode, the Last V8 and another mastertronic game. Can't remeber if the box ever said C64/128 though.

I'd always thought there was simply a disk version and a tape version until I started digging...

You are correct, the C128 versions do run in C64 mode though - tested this myself on one of my C128s :D

Lol i'm sure :).
It's funny, it was a very good version of Elite. Included the missions and had great graphics. But it's rarely named as being one of the best. I guess because nobody played it on MSX.

Not quiet true, I played Elite for many hours back in the 80's on a first gen 64k Toshiba MSX machine and attained rank Deadly though there were few people that had MSX machines as the market at the time was dominated by the Amstrad 64 and Commodore 64. Toshiba MXS add here:

The keyboard on my toshiba machine actually wore out due to playing Elite and all the ECM's I used, this was a tape version which I played until I got to the Constrictor mission but lost the trail somewhere and never found it again despite several running battles with that ship as it was very very tough even with mil lasers, extra energy pod and iirc extra laser cooling.

Note the MSX and Amstrad 64 cassette may have been almost identical in some cases as many amstrad tapes would work on my MSX machine when I used a mode select switch on dedicated computer tape drives and some would run with no adjustments too iirc.

I also recall when pirates attacked in squads of 3-4 ships the cpu would struggle and lagg like hell turning the game into a slide show!!

My main high value trades were Platinum, Gold, Gemstones, Narcotics and Furs, Firearms were also a good profit but were harder to find at the right price, there was also a glitch that allowed you to buy all the precious metals and gems on the market, save and then reload the commander and buy all the items repeatedly, this was however tedious with a tape drive. Furthermore there was another glitch that would reduce the profit margin of Gold and Platinum when you accrued over 999Kg's of them in the hold which is something I avoided and often ended up with 999Kg of Platinum etc.

Yay, a fellow MSX Elite player!
Indeed the computer would slow down a lot when there were many ships in view. For the rest it was a splendid version, (tape based) flashload, nice sounds, gfx and no lenslok.

Very much later i learned there was a glitch that allowed you to jump very long distances which came in handy a few times to save time. :) But by then i had practically stopped playing already.

sorry if this has already been covered, but I missed it in the 14 previous pages .... but ...... whats the best version in your opinion ? .. and why

Hi,
I just recently loaded up my MSX version on a Philips VG-8020.
After some lengthy tape-loading , I was quite positively surprised by the quality of this version compared i.e. with the spectrum port...
My favorite version for nostalgia will remain the C64 version - it played reasonably smooth and the docking music suits just TOO good... I also loved the trumbles :)
Visually the Archimedes and the NES version are great.
The Arch-Version is almost TOO good so it feels like playing Oolite :)
I am about to play Elite on every platform it was available for, we will see...
The Tatung Einstein version is a bit of a pain though ;-)

Does anyone here have the NEC PC98 version of Elite Plus.
If so, would it be possible to get some scans/pictures.

Just curious as it seems to be very hard to find any substantial information about this version.

HI, all my versions are English, and I have most of the original hardware to play them all on.

Its the law that I MUST wear my Elite Pilot badge when playing any version :)

Hi, I frequently play all my 26 versions (although not all in the same night!!) so would be happy to compare views on the various versions....

Just thought I would give a better photo of my 26 versions (+ the cover disk magazine)

Bumping this thread with a version of Elite that you don't have...

I'm an avid video game prototype collector, and I've owned many hundreds of prototypes spanning numerous platforms. Through my years of searching, I've come across many titles that never left the development phase. One of these gems being an unreleased NTSC version of Elite for the NES.

The game was purchased in a large lot of development materials for the NES, and it was a single EPROM (it was not on a populated pcbs). I had to send it to a friend that specializes in dumping prototypes. The EPROM had a strange pinout and required an adapter to dump.

I now have playable rom of the NTSC version of Elite, one that varies a great deal from the one found on Ian Bell's website (his rom actually doesn't run on NTSC hardware, whereas mine does). As you can see from my screen cap, my HUD is different than the rom found on Ian's site.
