I am still unsure on the use of Prospectors, and it makes a big difference to your load.
Prospectors will get trough limpets like crazy, but allow you to keep your hold free (and save time) looking for Painite, but you will come back with a half empty ship
Go without the Prospector controller, and you get an extra slot for cargo racks, but you have to "sample" every rock yourself. You also dont need to fill your cargo with limpets on the way out, if you are only collecting, you will gather more cargo that you use limpets.
Yep - I didn't bother with PD's - it seems just as easy to keep the extra cargo bay, zap an asteroid twice and let the collector limpets bring the samples back. If it's just low-value mats, then move on as there's plenty of other 'roids to chose from. Might take a small amount of extra time over prospectors though.
I did find though that I used an equal amount of collectors to cargo ratio, think I came back with only 1 ton short of a full hold.
Metallic can be down to mid 30s, an rocky goes up to high 20s. So I think this a simple range statement something like "if its more than X metal then its Metallic, if its between X metal and Y metal its HMC, otherwise its ice or rocky, which itself has bands for rocky, icy and ice/rock.
I have been blasting a couple off, then see what they are on the Contacts panel. A more representative sample, and you dont have to wait for the limpets
And now it seems the missions have been nerfed out of existence. I have been to about 10 Hi Tech systems, and a few others, and managed to offload a massive 5 tonnes of freshly minted metals. When I started there were always 4 or 5 missions at every Hi Tech station.
Without missions to fund it, this occupation is utterly pointless. I have put 20-30 hours into this jaunt (lets ignore me buying a Conda to do it in), and if I sell at stations, I will get a couple of million.

I'm heading inbound and was all psyched up to do some fun trading with my honestly-gotten (for a change) goods!
If your trading rank is Tycoon or Entrepreneur, you might be OK. I think it the the rank requirement that has been "tweaked". Shipping out Painite as a mere Broker seems virtually impossible. The whole reason I did this mining was to boost my trading rank without having to grind

I think gas giant rings and solar asteroid fields come out about the same, really. Some of them are really delicious. I can't tell if it randomizes them each time you instance, or not.

I love to mine and most of my income comes from mining, but as much as this prospect of deep space riches excites me, are the yields out there any better than a pristine metallic within the bubble? Is this just another Lasseter's reef? http://www.lasseteria.com/161.htm

I am not trying to put this down in any way. I think it is a must for the growth and development of mining for there to be rare riches out there to motivate you to upgrade beyond a mining ASP to the Megaships and become a true deep space miner, heading out into the void.
But I fear the yields and long term returns are no different than they are in the pristines that exist within the bubble.

I don't think so. They're just peaceful and quiet and all mine.
A Clipper will give you the same or slightly higher cargo than a Python at a MUCH lower price. Not as good defence, it is pretty much a trade level Clipper, but it is worth consideration and running a build to see what suits.
Yes that would be a cool feeling. I can also understand the attraction of going out an discovering it belt and mining it. It just adds that bit of ownership to it.

I considered the clipper, but I am about as far away from empire space as you can be. Also I don't want to have to work for the empire to get the ship.
Well I am a few more million towards the python and its a Sunday here so I can make a few more. But man after the last patch those High intensity sites are deadly. I used to be able to hold my own against most NPC attackers in my ASP, but now it seams deadly viper/sidey wings are owning me. Gotta get the python just to get revenge.
I've just started doing this. Didnt want to head back out into the black untill we get more exploration tat added, wrecks, planetary flight, weak signals 30k from sol, proper exploration missions, thargoids etc etc.

Mission is to find pristine metalic. Searched high and low in a aprox 300ly margin behind and above Li Young-Rui's area with no luck. Currently heading to New Yembo to do the same, if no luck there I will pop over to Sothis or something I think.
I've scanned so many systems and rings now in my search, by the time I do find my special ring I might end up getting the last 36% I need to make it to elite explorer!
On a side note, I wish my asp had bigger flood lights, love the lights on the python
