External View [A definitive discussion]

I played Rebirth for about a day before giving up so I can't recall if it ever had an external view option. To be honest even if it didn't that would have been the least of its concerns.

I want an external camera in ED. I hate to be locked in in the cockpit all the time. It doesn´t make sense not to add it.

X-Rebirth added the 3rd person cam and cockpit free look with v2.50

If you own the game you should update it immediately. I installed two days ago for the upcoming Teladi expansion and it´s awesome now. It just released to early *shrug*

A friend of mine suggested that an initial effort for external camera would be to utilise CCTV feeds from the station, that way you could have multiple angles

If they say it´s "because multiplayer" - that doesn´t count. You hardly see any people. Then enable it in solo mode and in out-of-combat online mode.

Regarding X-Rebirth I suggest you get the free expansion on Steam though, it will not be free anymore after v 3.0 release, if ordered afterwards (which could be any day now). So when you test it you´ll at least own the 3.0 Teladi expansion.

... so... just so that I understand the prcise situation.... you can buy stuff with RL money from FD to decorate your ship, but you can't then look at it or take a sexy screenshot of it in the game???

Well, that's almost true. You can see your ship once it is berthed and in the hangar.

Yup this.

Anyone who bought X Rebirth should quick "purchase" expansion 3.0 which is free until its official launch. Has various enhancements and extra storylines.

Well, based on X-Rebirth ongoing improvements over time (external views, 64bit version etc) we just have to wait for FD to add stuff along the way.
just wish it will be sooner than later

specifically for external views i also think FD should have not given so many decal options and charge money for them if we can't really see them besides the hangar (which doesn't support free camera yet...)
they could have waited with that and push for other features.

Yeah after the X-rebirth debacle I really expected ED to be released in a better state. Although arguably it is more polished and less buggy (although we'll have to see on release day) if anything its much more starved of features and content than X-rebirth. And it was all looking so good for space sims a year or so ago...

Oh and btw - for all that complaining that 3 person view will give some advantage in combat - I`m willing to give you all that advantage and accept it just to be able to have ability to look at my ship from the outside when i'm exploring the beautiful universe of Elite.
They crafted beautiful 3d models of ships, impressive spacescape, skins for ships, and don give us 3 person view - that does not make any sense for me. Any.

It's an immersion breaker, Vanity Drones you have to buy keep it real. You can see the beautifully 3D crafted ships all the time by flying close and in the hangar. Vanity drones are a superb idea. Not to mention when you can go outside your ship I'm sure you could float to a distance and take a nice photo in first person. No 3D cam ruins too niche opportunities which simply increase the depth. Vanity is a sin.

Look, I understand your points but many of us wants to look from outside on our ship in the move, flying past asteroids, stations etc. I play all kinds of flight sims from Il-2, Janes F-15, DCS and X-plane. When I`am bored with simulation and immersing myself with the inside view I want to have the option to just look at my plane from the outside and do all kind of flybys, mess with FOV, camera position etc.
If it breaks immersion - dont use it! If I want to immerse myself in X-plane I simply wont use external view for the entire flight! Simple really.

This AWFUL attitude plagued Xplane forums some time ago and keept me from going there for a long time.
Have you ever thought that maybe some of us can play multiple games?

Well this comment is totaly for the .......

The 3thr person view is implemented in the game now they do all her merchandise video with it!
I expect that the devs implement it asap for everybody, they have her visions ok, but i and many others payed already for the game and frontier is doing a service here and their job is to make the customers happy and if we want this feature we should become it. Specially when it is nearby no work to do it just allow it when hardpoints are deployed finish.
And this history about drones is very much over complicated...

People are crying around about much bigger stuff here walk on planets w.t.f. go and play call of duty...

This isn't a game for kids, it's a hardcore space sim. If you want external free camera ‎Start Citizen is this way.

Would you consider DCS to be a hardcore flight-sim? It has a plethora of external views and I for one would liike to see something like that in ED. Selling paint jobs for your ships without a means to actually admire them in all their glory does not seem like a sound business plan to me.
