Its pointless and not needed.

Care to elaborate and be more constructive perhaps? From what I've seen, the vast majority of people that expressed their views on the matter disagrees with your statement. The fact that you are being so brief makes me wonder if you're a) a troll or b) too lazy to explain your point of view to others. If it's the latter, then it is in fact your post that is pointless and not needed. If it's the former... Well...

Anyway, to answer your post:

The outside view is not pointless. The point of external view is to admire your ship in full glory from the outside.

The outside view is needed for people who like to take screenshots in game and turn them into desktop backgrounds for example.

And also, this discussion should be merged with the main TPP view discussion or closed as a duplicate.

I badly want an external View for a 'project'

I would be more than happy with a record feature, that you could play back in a station or whatever from any angle you want. Then this subject of PvP advantage could just <insert strongly felt words> off then!

Grrrrr

There will NEVER be an outside view for your ship, except maybe by purchasing camera drones. This was stated some time ago. It means that everyone has the same advantages. There is so so much to enjoy about the game, perhaps you should start being optimistic, or play another game.

So, you can buy a fancy paintjob, but you cant look at it?

a bit like your reply?

exactly.

I still cannot understand a game that sells external paint jobs for your craft but then doesn't let you look at it.

Not too mention the massive potential for screenshot interest from other gamers by taking lovely images within ED.... to deliberately block such usage seems perverse. Why build such a wonderful sandbox and then prevent you from showing it to others - other than through the cage of a cockpit.

So are people wanting an external camera for making cool pictures in a separate client or are they wanting a third person view for normal play in the game? The latter sounds like it's against the design philosophy of ED.

Why did warring tribes wear battle paint? It's not like they could see themselves whilst they were fighting.

I'm old school, I played Elite the day it launched on the BBC Model B in 84, to me Elite is 'in cockpit' only. I can totally understand seeing around your ship whilst its docked but playing the game via an external camera would all-but ruin the game to me. its silly and there are FAR more important things for Frontier to work on, in my opinion. far far more important things.

Personally, I only want it for taking screenshots. I am not really in favour of having a 3rd person view that allows for the full control of your ship, but I also wouldn't mind to be able to see my ship moving and turning from the outside. The external camera drone seems like a good, immersive and lore friendly compromise.

I'd like external cameras for the sole purpose of screenshots. It doesn't make a great screenshot with a cockpit in the way.. But other then that it wouldn't want one in. It would take away from the fairness of the game and just go against David's ideology of realism.

Thanks for explaining :)

Please see my post above in regards this. I am also against actually playing the game in 3rd person view, but... (see above).

It would be nice to have a hudless view for screenies. and an outside view for the times I take off from an external docking, (it would be nice to see the scorchmarks on the Landing pad, and perhaps a differnet type of mark if you used an external view to dock and did it badly :p)

I really don't think it would give you an advantage in fighting, unless you really don't understand the radar. Switching to an external view to see your enemy then switching back to fight once you've zero'd them, I think is alot less advantagious than figuring out that you can see their location relative to you using the radar, and the direction they're facing using the target, holographic, image, thing of them. Does that device have an official name btw?

edit: Actually, tower view on take off?
