I think most "Yays" want an external view non combat only and no advantage for combat etc. If you are against external views you can select all 3 no options.

Basically people just want a way to admire their own ship. How else can you justify spending REAL MONEY on decals and paintjobs in the cashstore, and not being able to even see it on your own ship??

:D

I hope that, as in FE2, we can see on a screen, our spaceship under every angle when we are docked in a shipyard

I'm afraid a "small screen on my dashboard" won't cut it.

If an external camera view is going to be implemented, there's only one way to do it - full screen 1920x1080 :)

Yes, after doing all the necessary nerfing to appease the insecure PvP crowd, of course.

My 2 pennies worth on this...

FD ran a competition for best screenshot and best video from the alpha. I don't remember seeing much of the cockpit in the winning entries.

Neon Raven's stunning videos sell the beauty of the game (even in an alpha state) to the uninitiated. Surely it's not too much to ask for us to be able to enjoy the wonders of the ED universe and the superb ship models we have grown up with, without having to "fly blind" looking directly up.

Yes, I agree there will be people that want to exploit this for combat benefits but if these are countered correctly, the game can ultimately market itself with vast amounts of stunning user created media of galaxy vistas, ships, stations, planets, moons, asteroid fields, rock hermits...

Forget that, I want to see my ship, in all its splendor, hitting atmo.

I want to recreate the opening to Serenity dammit!
(flying starship parts optional)

I can only agree with you, of course. But I was hoping on a screen, in the worst case, of course

;)

The poll at the top of this thread is very badly put together (sorry!) and can be interpreted in a whole number of ways...all of them with the possibility of being wrong since it's multiple choice. :p;)

I agree. Alas this thread (& my post at the start) has adopted it due to thread merging :(

If the questions (poll) had indeed been put more clearly, suggesting that an external view would only be offered for "sight seeing" and be properly tailored to ensure no combat advantage, you have to wonder how many people voting no may have voted differently.

Indeed, as has already been said, if an external view can be offered that does nothing more than allow the game to be better views (& enjoyed) without offering any significant game play impact (advantage). What's the problem?

I mean the people who have voted "No: This will break immersion for me," seem to have taken the most bizarre option to vote for? If it will break the immersion for you, simply DON'T PRESS THE BUTTON!

Agreed! It would be nice to play about and view your ship firing etc while in an external view, but purely for novelty sake. I'm sure most folks would be happy with it being nerfed enough for it to be a combat disadvantage.

Not really, since people would then interpret "external view" differently.
Aka Frontier First Encounters (F9) ..and non -advantage for combat/non-combat option, too look around your new ship.

a lot of people probably just picked one option not realizing it was multiple choice
Inadequate questions- flawed statistics :)

I've voted for External view non Combat.

If Frontier developers are taking the time and patience to design the various ships outer hulls, and working 'gadgets' visible from outside the spacecraft, then I'd certainly like the option to see 'em! :D

Is there a compartment in the various ships that can house a pressure washer, sponge, woolly mitt, ship shampoo (try sayin' that quickly when you've had a few drinks ;) ) and ship hull wax?
I'm fairly confident the design team have already thought of this, but I just thought to mention this...just in case they haven't, as I'd be most embarrassed to be seen in the Elite Dangerous Universe in a scruffy dirty ship.......cheers! :D

Jack :)

Been looking at alpha 3 videos of ships in their hangers, I notice there's a sudden switch to third person view, which gives me the impression the pilot is somehow removed from his cockpit.

If we're going to be having external views of the ship like this via station cameras, shouldn't there at least be some kind of projection screen pop-out from the cockpit HUD display to fill our monitor screens, an FX to make the transition from first-person-cockpit to third-person-camera view more believable?

Ideally they would make it a first person view of you outside the ship, moving and looking around. Dunno how hard that would be, we already have bodies in the pilot's seat? And you wouldn't have to do much except move around and get in and out of the ship seamlessly. A small "preview" wouldn't be bad for the game launch either, then everybody will "get" immediately that more first person activities will follow later.

I think not having an extenral view of the ship would lessen the game considerably, for one thing the images from the game would be flipping dull if they all had to be taken from the cockpit.

I honestly dont understand peoples worries about a 3rd person view, all flight sims have them and they never detract from flying using the cockpit. Trying to fight whilst in chase view would be impossible so what is the issue?

I want to have as many differnet ways of appreciating the beauty of this game as I can and for those who dont want the outside view there is an easy solution - make it deselectable in the options menu.

Honestly, I hope Frontier dont pay too much attention to these types of forum questions/polls, its only a very small selection of seriously involved people frequent these boards, I would hate to think they were influencing the design of this game in any big way.

Do you mean us being able to walk around inside the "outfitting hangar" below?

That area is off limits for first person gameplay actually to avoid players heads being cut off by robotic arms working on the ship. ;) Listen to this recording of David Brabens BAFTA talk made by Lave Radio at the 24:28 mark:

Quite interesting how they have planned that out IMO. :)

After playing around with docking and seeing my ship in the hanger, makes me want an external view even more.

The external damage and wear and tear looks awesome.

Especially on larger ships, post battle when its all quiet, I want to be able to see the large holes in my Anaconda, sparking and letting out air.

Oh right, I actually did listen to that but forgot! :D But you could still have a "boardwalk" around the hangar so you don't get in between the robot arms and your ship. And imagine those robot arms refitting your hull plating or cockpit, or jump drive. You wouldn't really want to be INSIDE your ship then either.

If there's no gameplay mechanism to explain how the insta-switched viewpoint is used in the alpha 3 ship hanger, then is an explanation really needed to have external viewpoints of our ship while we're flying in space?

a very smart and misleading poll where 3 possible choice are the same answer and 1 only for the external view.

229 votes against the external view.

This thing should stop here.
