I propose a simple fixed freelook camera inside or on top of the landing pad tower as a first approach. ( This would be an option while the ship is docked. )

Arguments :
* Each landing pad has its control tower.
* Probably very easy to implement.
* Would be awesome to look at the scenery ( other ships landing, stations interiors )
* Vanity-view of your current ship.
* Temporary stopping this recurrent request on the forums :)

Asked for but not proposed afaik.

^ This.

As far as I can remember from the DDF this was one of the debates we had and everyone involved, even the Dev's, were against an external Camera.

The only reason people are talking about it is because of the Arcade style Arena shooter that is Star-Citizen.

is that right? It's not because they were selling skins you had to go to outfitting to see and even then not that well? That people actually want to look at the beautiful ships Frontier made?

Well...
1) there are external cameras and external cameras. Meaning... third-person type cameras following a game object and fixed cameras (pointing at an object or pointing in any direction, controlled by the player )
2) the game already have fixed external cameras in the outfitting mode.
3) In a future expansion we should be able to walk around the ship.
4) The people asking constantly for an "external camera" are asking for a vanity-view of their ship to take selfie-type screenshots. Problem is that it can be used to cheat (if use while in flight) and is immersion breaking ( if there's no game-world justification ).

What I proposed is combining 1,2,3 and 4 to calm down the "photographers" while the expansion is released ( which could be 2 or more years ).

so just don't give a hud and don't allow weapons to converge fire, boom problem solved, the guy trying to fight in third person is now an easy target for even NPCs. Yeah, if you are going to put so much into letting us take 16k screenies, then let us include the ship in it :)

Did you even read the OP? Because it seems you clearly didn't. And it's just not you; so many people in this thread didn't even bother to read the OP.

I have clearly mentioned in it that the conclusion from the discussion at that time was that External camera should be given for only travelling and be automatically disabled when engaging in fights. And as far as i remember, someone from the Dev team did say that they will be considering it. So it's not just a random idea.

the devs are using there dev-cam on every single newsletter for outside ship view screenshoots

they even want to sell decals and paintjobs for ships

just a few.... dont get it that they arent forced to use it

IMMERSSION BREAKING!!!!

most .. i have ever heard

cause of that and only cause of that we still dont have it but it will come its allready anounced and be sure by release we have our outside cam

and without an perfect 3rd person cam noone will pay for there extras ...so be sure it will come no matter how loud the forever backward mourn

Hmm i actually want a "fly-by" camera when out of combat. If engaged in combat it wouldnt work (auto off). And it would work like 99% of all serious flight simulators in the way that it positions itself in front of the ship (random placement) and then track your ship as it flies by. Keep the camera on the ship for a while as it passes and then again position itself in front to get the fly by again.
.
This as mentioned is in almost all serious flight simulators so why not ED? I would LOVE to see my ship for some screenshot taking and for some cut scene video editing. :) Just auto turn it off when engaging in combat. With the random positioning in the front it wouldnt be useful for antyhing than that anyway. This universe in ED is so beautiful and the ships looks awesome so to never see them for screenshotting is a missed opportunity imho.

I did read the first post; that's why I tried to clarify the meaning of "external camera".

Aside from the cheating + immersion breaking arguments, there's the "disabled when engaging in fights" problem : Knowing when a ship is "not engaged in a fight" is not a trivial problem from a programmer point of view given the simulation nature of E:D.

As soon as you deploy your hardpoints the camera is disabled. On the other side, if you get hit by an enemy weapon's projectile, the camera is disabled. The ship already warns you when you are under attack so nothing is lost in the process. Simple as that. And this is just from the top of my head. I am sure a proper mechanism can be developed given proper thoughts.

And to the Immersion breaking complaints, there are tons of things in-game which are immersion/lore breaking (the famous cargo scoop slowing your ship in near vacuum comes to mind as well as tons of others) so let's not go down that road.

I think a simple solution is to offer a purchasable remote camera drone that can be programmed to follow the ship or remotely controlled with limited ship operation whilst viewing through the camera ie no hud, view lag (drone has to maneuver to stay in position, faster you move the slow the drone can compensate)

There will be no need for an external camera once First Person module is release. I rather see them working on that than on camera controls.

Ew. No thanks.

Why would you complicate things like that? I don't see any problems in terms of advantages to players with the solution i offered 2 posts above yours.

3rd person camera? Sure, why not. As long as your hardpoints are all retracted and useless and you have zero nav control. Well no, you could still Leroy Jenkins a station or a parked ship at full throttle...so...ship must be at a dead stop and floating. Now you can take your pretty screenshots. :)

You don't need a 3rd person camera to crash a ship. I mean, really, are you serious? I can do it whenever i want now itself.

What's with all the hate from some people towards a simple thing as a 3rd person camera. The only reason i want it is for my travels across the galaxy to be more enjoyable and being able to view my ship when it's flying.

And for the people with the snarky tones towards "pretty screenshots", have you ever looked at the photos in the newsletters we get?

No 3rd person camera but I believe in the DDF there was mention of camera equipment you could mount to hardpoints or some sort of camera drone system. It's one thing I would absolutely love to have since I'd quite like to spend my time in galaxy being a wandering explorer/photographer who bravely runs from fights or any sort of 'normal' job at every opportunity.

You'd think a mod would have merged this thread with the other 4 billion others by now. It's been discussed ad infinitum ad nauseam; there will be drone cams, it will be put in later. Fin.
