A simple external camera for screenshots etc would be good ,with a cutout in case of combat - no need for anything like drones egosoft went that way with X-Rebirth ,drones and no external view and one the biggest complaints at launch was the lack of external view ,some of the first mods were attempts to put the external view back!

It would benefit them also, videos on youtube made using dynamic views will help sell the game.
All those lovely views were not seeing don't exist..
Once again, we see people claiming that PvP issues is the reason why we don't have external views (yet) even though the devs themselves have repeatedly said that is NOT the reason and at best a beneficial side effect of wanting the game to take place from the eyes of the commander (in a similar fashion of what can be seen in games like FarCry, Half Life, Mirrors Edge...)

The main reason I want external views is to see my ship. The ships models are so wonderful its a crime to not be able to see around them. And I would love to be able to see my ship landing struts coming down or look around it whilst landed hopefully watching people milling about and vehicles bringing fuel/supples etc. Would add so much to the game its unbelievable its been this long without it. I just cant fathom any reason for spending so much love on the models and then not let you see them close up. You cant see anything much on the ships at the moment - combat is far too fast and blurred to see anything and the couple of fixed views whilst equipping are not good enough to get a real idea what your ship looks like.
Of course the best thing they could do is introduce external views along with a ship skin editor. I could do some great skins for the ships in this game. The ones available to buy are really naff. I just visited The Deep in Hull and some of the fish markings there really make you think why haven't we got any great starship skins like that in this game. Its all just stripes, camouflage and metallic, and the stripes and camouflage we do have are the dullest representatives of those sorts of skins you could possibly imagine.
One of these days I will be able to fly my Chris Foss inspired ship in this game! I hope.

I think another reason why we stil dont have this is that the pilots own ship is not full rendered externally from his POV, paintjobs etc cannot be seen by you - they can by others. So the external view is a bigger task than it woudl first appear, if FD actually said that and you know, communicated, it woudl be good though
Let us have a look on our beauties. I don't Need a combat cam, and I know, when I'm sitting and driving in my car, I don't see it from the outside, but I can see it, when looking from my window at home! So would I love to have at least the Option to look around it when docked, or at least in the outfitting screen.
I also don't see how can one benefit from an external camera in PvP. Camera stays focused in one direction and your ship moves around with no HUD and crosshairs. You could move the camera with keys but it doesn't stay locked to ship's orientation and it moves slower than your ship's turn rate (even type 9). If you can make it work to have an edge in PvP then you probably don't need an external camera to rule in PvP as you kick ass already.

I know a way of actually doing external views in real life, practically anyone can follow my method, open the spoiler and look into the future......
Get a camera and take pictures of your spaceship from outside, get into your spaceship and look at those pictures, viola external view.

Anyway, it's great news. Also, skins might almost be worth it soon, if they keep this up.
