Wanna play Sim Racing games? Get a Wheel an Pedals!
Wanna play Flight/Space Sims? Get a Hotas and Pedals!

Oh well, can I sell my £300 investment in this game to someone then as I just use an XBox 360 controller and am clearly not worthy of playing the game?

Now, whichever side of the debate you fall on this supersedes it in my opinion, FD are god here, and their view at the moment is as stated above.

Doesn't mean everybody has to agree that FD are correct though.

Which for the record, I don't agree.

I'm even less worthy then, as I use a keyboard and mouse, I hate twiddlesticks with a passion.

Getting used to FPV is usually only a matter of training and getting used to it.

And in the worst case I'd rather have one player less in any game than messing around with players exploiting 3PV mechanics. There is no such thing as a non exploitable 3PV, at least I have not yet found a game that managed it.

Same goes for mouse + keyboard aiming but this is a different story.

That attitude. What's next? Maybe I am not allowed to cook food unless I have a set of expensive professional kitchen knives? Not allowed to listen to music without a dedicated hifi? Not allowed to watch movies without a 4K 3D TV and a surround sound setup?

It's a good job this is a game eh? and not a Sim

It's a romanticised science fiction game akin to Star Wars. The only realistic thing about it at this point is the location and scale of some of the stellar bodies (that we know about) with everything else being made up with procedural generation or left overs from previous procedural generation runs on the old games. Everything else breaks down pretty quickly when cast in a realistic light.

Yes there are and can be nods to realism where it makes sense to do so but that decision is based on whether is makes the game more fun and entertaining to do so, not if it makes the game more realistic (unless it's just fiction work that doesn't actually affect game play).

Right, so that's well over 800 posts on a subject that FD have already given their decision on, then.

Well done, everyone!

Also, Elite: Dangerous is not a space sim. It is a romanticised space game. Anyone continuing to use the word sim in relation to E: D shall be plagued by a cataclysm of small irritations.

While I am against 3rd person view during the Combat some kind of camera drone is acceptable for taking pictures of the ship and of the environment.

I strongly disapprove your idea of the requirement to buy special hardware to play the game. It should be possible to play the game with the minimal hardware necessary to use PC, i.e. keyboard and mouse.

Unless you are willing to sponsor such equipment as HOTAS, pedals etc. to anyone who wants to have them but does not have such opportunity due to financial situation.

OMG I agree with Oss!

Actually it has been stated before on these forums by a dev that 'things can and may change' in the future.

So definitely worth discussing.

.

I agree BUT with the adendum that it would be a disaster if the controls were nerfed so much as to make KB&M the defacto superior solution.

Make the game playable on the lowest common denominator for sure, but what I dont want is a scenario where I end up using KB&M even though I have a flight stick becasue the controls are simplified so much that the point and click accuracy of mouse aim makes it a winner. (I hate to make it my poster boy for everything I dont want in ED (esp as I think it is a damn fine game for what it is) but again, WarThunder Arcade mode is the perfect example of this imo, where I play on KB/M despite having a joystick.

From what I can tell this is not the case, so that is great :)

Well, its an off-topic. But I feel much more comfortable with HOTAS and pedals than with KB/M, however the game is still playable and enjoyable even with KB/M so I guess balancing is right. I was specifically asked yesterday to complete Single Player missions with KB/M (with my gaming mouse replaced by the cheapest optical mouse) - did not have any problems with completing Incursion.

Can't give rep...here have a virtual one! +1

Indeed. But this has been. In multiple threads. With a great deal of repetition. Of a very small number of views.

I think you have to look at the types of things you expect FD to change, given their stated views on what they intend E: D to be.

Or you can carry on peeing into the wind.

We already now that the game will be constantly evolving, I've said before but I am confident that at the very least *something* close to an external view will be added in time.

You simply cannot have a space game with an asset such as the universe that Elite will have without being able to show it in all its glory.

If the wind is going in the right direction , it can be fun peeing into it :)

To be honest, this thread has been a good constructive discussion, I think it needs to be here.

I understand the argument for not wanting it in multiplayer, but I really hope someone more intelligent than me is able to come up with an external view hack for SP mode. Personally I think to not have the option in SP would be a great shame.

If that's the only way it can be offered, so be it...

But for the rest of us who want to participate in a universe with other real people, it will be a shame if a simple solution cannot be found by FD. I'm certain a compromised external view could be offered that would keep all people happy!

Indeed. And you are probably right that some sort of external/cockpitless/drone view will be added, as has been argued for and against throughout this and the many other threads on the subject. There. Done. Everyone can move on now.

My point was that saying the same thing over and over again is a little pointless. FD have repeatedly said that the experience they are aiming for is you in the cockpit. Not a 3rd person view. This is unlikely to bend very far from that goal except where gameplay or some unforeseen limitation dictates that it be so.

To argue that this discussion is constructive is only valid up to the point that the discussion has been had, and that point was reached a long time ago in a thread far far away.

It is very much akin to the newtonian flight discussion. Have it if you wish but know that nothing further is being added to it by continuing it as all points have already been made. FD have the final say and have laid out the parameters in which flexibility can be achieved.

Right. Pee on, dudes!

There are many pointless threads on many forums around the internet, but people like to discuss things...this thread wont be going away unless a mod closes it.

Which I would kindly ask them not to.

Just letting you all know that I started a thread on various views (other than external) and I'd be really happy to hear other peoples thought on non-external additional views. This is not a hi-jack attempt.

This should keep this thread on topic and allow folk to discuss the related alternative view matters,

The thread is called

Rear, side views and weapons and cameras

I just remembered a video RobFisher posted in the DDF some time back: OMSI bus simulator. If you can get past the fact you're looking at a game that simulates a double-decker bus, it has some really interesting touches. Of particular relevance to this thread is the use of third-person view in specific hand-placed locations (e.g. bus stops) to give that sense of context without taking you out of the moment while driving.
