FD: Apparently Elite got noticed, not in a good way

I'm not sure if FD may already be aware (I assume yes). But apparently your success has gotten noticed.
.
One of my old corp mates from EvE mentioned last night. Apparently a large group of players from multiple corps on EvE are deliberately targeting Elite, this was going on before to a limited degree but has apparently reached a much more serious and organized level since the Steam launch. The intent seems to be to run Elite into the ground before it can take off. The plan is apparently to target and grief the living crap out of people, new players specifically until people quit and the game dies off.
.
I'd imagine eventually they'll lose interest and give up, but from the sounds of things you'll have a very large group (by Elite standards) of players from outside of the Elite community targeting your player base.
.
Anyway, for what its worth.

Aaaaaand THIS is why I don't do PvP. Because a large portion of the people that participate in it have this mentality. Granted, not everyone has it...but enough do so as to warrant my steering clear of it.

That sounds unlikely, silly, but very funny conceptually. :)

Q: How much short-term financial pain does it cause the publisher of a "single up-front cost" game if a player stops playing?
A: None.

Q: How much pressure can players exert on a "single up-front cost" game by misbehaving?
A: None.

Q: What's the one and only way to personally support a "single up-front cost" game you do not own?
A: Buy it.

:D

i play eve and im letting my buddies in game know how great a game this is. but i wouldnt put it past the eve community to intentionally grief new players. my own first experience resulted in warp in terdiction and promt killing by other players. however if i wasnt used to eve i would have probably given up. this is a great game with great potential i hope more players see that.

Spend 40£ on a game to try and make it fail. Check
Watch to many twee internet flash mobs videos and think its the best thing since sliced bread. Check
Pointless internet children thinking they are baddass cool kids. Check
Thinking that their online persona as a tough guy will somehow make them feel good about themselves and improve their life's. Check
Watching Players swap to solo/combat log to pee on their parade. Check

Dear oh dear I don't think I have heard anything more silly and stupid in my life. No doubt there will be endless youtube videos about it at some point

I will paypal real money to the first player who can make an entire EVE corp RAEG while they squish noobs in Elite and put it on Youtube :D

Whiskas for my cat? :) I can try. It might be a tough task to find them in the first place, instancing, 400 billion systems and all that...

yes but only a bit more than the amount of populated systems as eve.. a bit under 19000 IIRC, compared to EVE's 14000 (including wormholes).. not as big as many people think.

All are welcome, more pew pew for my Clipper, eats Sidey's for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, with a little Elite Conda on the side, more players, more money for our games development, they are having delusions of grandeur if they think they can negatively impact this game, come on, join in the fun, leave your point n click crap, try flying a real, well as close to real as I'm going to get ship against us seasoned Alpha, beta, gamma and Dec 16th launch players, with our 'A' classes, could be messy...for you, still, it will bring some more excitement to the proceedings, oh btw, I'm in Ngaiawang, big white Clipper, Big weapons, imperial Baron with a target on his ship...come get me, lol.

This is nothing new, the offlinegate mob have been cheating/griefing since day 1 of open release. They do this (in their own words) to drive people into solo/leave the game to force FD to implement offline/go bust and release the source code.

They've failed its a small (but vocal) bunch of sulky types who can be completely neutered by switching to solo to visit Lave/playing in Mobius or practicing evade and hyperjump.

Wow, talk about conspiracy theory. There might be a few players that do this, but I bet most of those that wanted the game exclusively for the offline mode either got their refunds and left or simply wrote off what they paid for the game.

Long term business model for ED was supposed to be selling expansions and store items, and players that have left the game obviously won't purchase those. So, while I don't think this specific threat amounts to much, driving players away will harm the long term prospects of the game.

As others have noted it probably isn't a big deal, but if we do get a large influx of PVP minded players, I welcome it. One of my favorite things about Eve is High Security space, and how you can't really trust anyone. Turning the populated areas of Elite into that would be fine, if they aren't already that way.

and of course Solo is available for those without a PVP bent.

Don't. Its technically considered naming and shaming to post a video that has any commander name clearly visible at any given point.

What, about that "jilted offline players" rubbish? Yeah. But there's something poetic about the thought of some offline-or-bust players spending months on end in Open Play, actively engaging in PvP. :D

It only takes a few words from an experienced player to a newbie being blown up a lot in Open Play, and they're sorted. Like,

Tactical solutions in Open Play:
- Watch scanner in supercruise, and avoid letting suspicious ships get behind you in the first place.
- In supercruise, overshoot target stations and double back for final approach.
- Submit to interdictions, to avoid long FSD cooldown (for now, will be revised)
- Star-jumps are not subject to mass disruption. Set a course for another system if interdicted by larger ships.

Long-term Open Play solutions:
- Change regions. Relocate 100-200 Light Years. Chances are, you won't see a soul.
- Make in-game friends, and fly with them. Build a support base of like-minded pilots.

Short-term jerk avoidance solutions, if the same person is camping a station and killing all departing players:
- Switch to Solo mode, leave the area. Leave them to live their exciting station-camping life. Switch back to Open Play, and continue your own journey.

Alternate Play solutions:
- Join Mobius PvE Group, where PvP is only welcome in Conflict Zones.
- Make your own Private Group, and fly with friends.

For a player who enjoys the argy-bargy of player hostilities, there's obviously no need to go beyond "Tactical solutions in Open Play", above.

For a player who likes the risk of left-field gameplay coming at them, but finds themselves in the middle of organised, high-level hostile groups, "Long term solutions to Open Play" would suffice.

And for those who are really not enjoying any of that stuff in the least, FD built in mechanisms to address such concerns.

So there are many alternatives to "leaving the game" or "leaving Open Play". :)

ED is heavily instanced game with very few bottlenecks, no territorial control, and has solo/private group modes which seem to be very popular. Therefore, actions described by OP can have only very limited effect, I am not sure if my fellow EVE players are aware of that. At least PvP-focused crowd here should be happy for getting more action.
