FDev, come on already! Beyond a joke. Anyone else seeing this?

ED should be placed into a more dedicated server oriented mesh architecture. From descriptions of the recent job listings on the frontier site it seems they are possibly looking into this. Hope it happens.

re: OP, while sympathizing with your connection and instancing problems, The Beyond updates are far from a joke.

Urm, they are looking for PHP peeps. Now - you could build a client/server architecture upon HTML, but, but....

It'd be the worst idea ever.

I'm not trying to be antagonistic, but do you fully understand how the connections work? UDP forms the basis of how players interact. Sometimes it simply goes missing. You can't use TCP as then you'd simply end up with a slideshow.

Yeah they can't use a TCP connection at all, i am aware, but using a UDP that decides randomly, it's gonna half ar*e the job, is not acceptable, they need to work on its internal logic enough so that its recives/sends the packets regualrly enough, and stongly enough, they don't somehow get lost in traslation. (Most likely because the code is very similar to something else and the two conflict in game)

Today in wing in open.
Kill conda and its SLF explodes.
My shields are getting hit by something but nothing is red on radar.
I ask my wing m8 whats shooting me ?
He says " The SLF from that conda".
Im like " Dude I saw it explode"
Hes like "Not on my screen dude"
Im like "WTH"
Hes like "WTH"
He blows it up.
END of cool story bro !

Happened to me as well yesterday. I wasn't in a wing, but there was another CMDR in the Res.
I didn't really understand what was happening, no reds, yet something (an invisible enemy?) was eating away my shield.
Then it suddenly stopped, the other CMDR may have killed it.

E: D would need to go to a subscription model to pay for peer 2 server architecture. That's probably a non-starter.

The problem with peer-to-peer is one potato bogs the instance, which is dependent on the weakest link. They could set a higher threshold for instances, but potatoes would cry more.

I'm hopeful with the improvements in the quality of Internet service and Cmdr's computers overall this will disappear in the next year-and-a-half.

Internet is certainly improving. Friend of mine had a moan at Concast because they couldn't stream TV show X. One phone call and a modem reboot later - and they were at a solid 160/16.

Why did they close the office in Nova Scotia why Asp why lol
That happened a few years ago, and I have no idea. It's a gorgeous place though :D

It's becoming a very frustrating issue and I really do hope that FD sort it out. Elite deserves to be better than this, it really does. Last night the network was a complete joke. I was in battle where a ship would suddenly pop in at 3km away then completely dissappear, as if crossing between two instances. I could see people shooting a target I couldn't see, despite me being able to see them. It's almost embarrassing for the game to look this shoddy in terms of networking when it is an online multiplayer game.

I remember how shambolic GTA online was in it's early days, and reflect upon Rockstar being an enormous company. But let's face the facts here. FRONTIER are more than capable of coming up with a better solution than the current P2P setup. I really believe that. They are more than sufficiently wealthy to implement dedicated servers, I would imagine - I could be wrong! Elite has been out for years now and really needs this sorted.

In my personal opinion, a better experience in Elite, less of the shoddy lag at busy CG's and an overall more seamless interaction between players present in systems would improve the perception of the game and the experience, which would lend to the servers paying for themselves, because in the current form the game really does nothing but likely drive some of the playerbase away and sadly some of them probably never come back.

I remember back when I played the Xbox game. It was a rough ride with all the serious glitches and other issues each update. But the one that peeved people the most was the constant disconnects, the lack of being able to see their friends in the same instance, dropping from supercruise, jumping back out, over and over, etc. It was a shambles at times and personally it needs overhauled urgently because unfortunately those same issues are still a thing.

That's my opinion.

Yeah 100%, its now time for dedicaed servers and an end to this P2P architecture.

Very much doubt it will ever happen, and P2P is the way many games are going. Hell, even Rockstar are using it. GTA Online is Hybrid P2P like ED. P2P is the future of online gaming. You might not like it, but its where things are going.

Besides, you might be willing to pay a monthly subscription (i'm not), but that as a business model has been dying for years as well as its become rather unpopular, and the other main option is P2W, and i don't think many people would like that either.

To throw my 2 cents into this one, I can agree something needs looking at. Not too long ago a CMDR and I tried meeting up at geological sites on a planet a every time we CTD. Ended up just having to hang out in orbit. Not to mention the issue with cmdrs seeing different types of geological sites though they are at the same coordinates...

Thankfully, though, I don't spend much time in open or with other CMDRS in general.

Localised Instancing vs Central Server , we're not even talking apples vs oranges, more like apples vs used thargoid toilet paper.

There is no fix to instancing, it needs to be changed completely to "central servers", and that is a fundamental change and it won't happen(my opinion only).

It's complicated. On a traditional dedicated servers architecture, you have levels/maps loaded on servers. In ED the "map" is the galaxy...

No real time game is instance free. Maybe in the future, through a mesh of interconnected servers that are mapping areas of the open world games. But even in this case, you cannot beat the speed of light. For an aussie, to connect to a UK server, it will always be less than optimal.

Put it simple, the p2p architecture looks optimal on paper for ED. It's a hybrid, of course. There are a lot of things to fix, but I don't blame the architecture for that. Networking in multiplayer games is hard. Wireless suck. Simple truths.

It certainly deserves better dev team..

Hold on, there is a word of difference between dev team and management and financial decisions made.

In short, don't bash the devs, they are hard working guys who are doing what they are told.

I'm a major critic of Star Citizen, but i'll never bash the devs themselves.

You might bash the decisions made, but they were made with reasons in mind - you might disagree with those. FD might have been able to capture a bigger market and provide a better experience with a C/S architecture, but we would have had to pay for that, one way or another.

FD, I have been spending a fortune and a lot of time on this game. Please, I would ask that you start to actually test your game properly prior to updates and that you double time it with fixing old glitches that break the game in my opinion. You charge for cosmetics and since there are none really awarded through in game activities, I'd ask that you honour the money you make from this game by at least testing the product properly, because I really cannot remember an update being released that suggests that you do, because they are always buggy, or worse, they reintroduce old bugs.
