FDev's Bruce: ship to foot transition will be fade-to-black, and expect physical multicrew drop-ship transitions to be the same

Dear Game Designers: What kind of a Neil Armstrong moment is a fade to black teleport out of my SRV to standing on the ground?

Fade to black worked for ship to SRV because 1) there was no space legs, and 2) nobody else saw the transition.

Fade to black is an utter failure in Odyssey.... Imagine how that is going to look in game!

- You'll see players magically spawn outside their ships, and magically disappear into them.

- You'll see players magically spawn outside of their SRVs when they get out of them. Then stand next to them to magically enter them.

- Inside the cockpit (if you multicrew) you'll see players magically spawn in and out of their seats.

This is a total let down.

I would suggest maybe transition into short animations? Getting up and walking to cockpit door? Then fade to black and then cut an animation walking / climbing down ship ladders?

Exciting SRV's should definitely have animation in and out of it?

So my post on page one was a joke but do you actually think we'll just fade out from black and be on the ground?

The answer was talking about the transition from and to the cockpit but was ambiguous about whatever happens after that.

Chances are, we'll appear at the top of a ramp or stairs. This will still give us the opportunity for the Neil Armstrong moment. I'm sure we won't "beam up" from the ground either, as you're implying. I'm guessing we'll need to walk up the stairs/climb a ladder and walk right up to the airlock before we "transition" to black screen then back to the seat.

I doubt anyone cared much about Neil Armstrong moving from his seat to the door...

This, precisely this.

Calm down people.

I'm hoping that you'll fade to black to the airlock which you open and then walk down the ramp to give you that Armstrong Moment. If it's a fade to black to the bottom of the ramp, I think they'll miss the big impact?

This is the part I'm interested in- not the 'gazing at celestial stuff' moment, but how you get out. If I fly into a ++++ firestorm, I want to have the ramp come down and run out Klendathu style screaming like the Space Marine I am: (3:13 onwards)

Otherwise, its going to feel very disconnected and a bit sterile. But time will tell, it won't be that long before we see how it all flows.

It sounds like Odyssey will be very similar to Mass Effect in how it handles transitions, and Mass Effect was a very successful (minus Andromeda) series and enjoyable game to play, so I have no problem with this.

Dear Game Designers: What kind of a Neil Armstrong ..

Actual footage: Sea of Tranquility, July 1969.
Armstrong: The Eagle has landed
Control: We copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue.
Aldrin (garbled): Blue? FABULOUS. But how do I look?

And so fade to grey. It genuinely never interrupts me on SRV. Would it be nice to be able to walk in ship later? Sure. Would I like to be able to fade through the faffy faff of getting through the hatch when I'm on mission timer? Definitely. Do I need help climbing down a ladder? Nope. It'll be fine.

If they're going to do ship interiors at some point this will change, and there's no point in devoting lots of energy to something you'll throw away afterwards.

Can't say I'm surprised by this. What's intriguing is where the fade actually leaves us. So in the SRV transition it leaves us in the SRV bay where we then get the animation of the SRV being lowered and unfolded until it drops the last foot or so onto the ground. So I'm not remotely surprised that we don't see a whole animation of the chair turning around, the pilot standing up, walking around it, going to the door, pressing a button, opening the door and walking through it (I think that would get old pretty quickly anyway). But what if we activate the "deploy legs" menu option (joke! hopefully it will at least say something like "exit cockpit") and then have a fade which leaves us standing at a door which leads to the exit ramp which we then walk down to the surface. What really intrigues me is ... don't some ships (Eagle?) have a ladder. So will we have the ability to climb ladders? I'm really not convinced we will (would FD really add an entire new mechanism for selecting/climbing ladders purely for this moment? ... and I haven't see any evidence/need for ladders elsewhere). And if not, then where does the fade for ships that don't have ramps leave us? Perhaps it really will be just a fade to standing on the ground. Despite Frontier's answer to that AMA question we're still really no closer to understanding what that initial transition will be like.

Just for clarity, fade to black instead of traversing the interior of our ship isn't news. No idea why it's being treated as such.

Seems to me the "issue" is what happens after that or before it (when disembarking or embarking respectively).

I'm 99% sure Bruce wasn't talking about that. So sure because "like the srv" obviously doesn't mean we're going to be lifted by a crane. But I thought that was blindingly obvious.

Something else will happen. That's the NAM. And they're not going to tell us about that in a throwaway comment like this.

Ps I'm bored typing "Neil Armstrong moment" so it's NAM from now on.

Pps this isn't a revelation! Use the stuff in your head.

People were expecting different?

Oof.

Quite happy with it myself.

This is mainly due to the fact I remember that this is a literal video game and not a 1:1 life-replacement sim-matrix.

I agree and I absolutely would want some kind of transition like we have with the SRV instead of simply spawning next to the ship.

People say repetitive animations are a waste of time and get old really quick, but I never felt the need to complain about the SRV deployment. 🤷‍♂️

Yup, to qualify my previous comment, short animation sequences like the SRV deployment are fine.
