FDev's Bruce: ship to foot transition will be fade-to-black, and expect physical multicrew drop-ship transitions to be the same

Dear Game Designers: What kind of a Neil Armstrong moment is a fade to black teleport out of my SRV to standing on the ground?

Fade to black worked for ship to SRV because 1) there was no space legs, and 2) nobody else saw the transition.

Fade to black is an utter failure in Odyssey.... Imagine how that is going to look in game!

- You'll see players magically spawn outside their ships, and magically disappear into them.

- You'll see players magically spawn outside of their SRVs when they get out of them. Then stand next to them to magically enter them.

- Inside the cockpit (if you multicrew) you'll see players magically spawn in and out of their seats.

This is a total let down.

I would suggest maybe transition into short animations? Getting up and walking to cockpit door? Then fade to black and then cut an animation walking / climbing down ship ladders?

Exciting SRV's should definitely have animation in and out of it?

To be fair, players magically despawning and despawning by their ships was to be expected without ship interiors. This is the way it is done in many games with vehicles, and just makes sense as long as there are no interiors in game yet.

As for the Neil Armstrong moment I suspect it has always been more of an evocative description for the first time we are actually in first person outside our ships and can have that sense of relative scale. Depending on the right time, lighting, planet, environment sounds and music etc it may very well be awesome. Either way your mileage was always going to vary.

I'm again too late to ask, but does anyone happen to know what's going to happen to the Deep Space Explorers when Odyssey comes out: will they be able to leave their ship on foot with their standard suit, or will they have to go back to the bubble to buy a spacesuit?

From what I understand you can, its just your flightsuit is the least adapted for walking about in (slot / pockets wise).

Thank you! I wouldn't expect any additional functionality of course (like shields or recovery instruments). I'm just curious if it will work at all. Or to put it another way: will our standard suits offer the absolute most necessary, like oxygen and temperature regulation?
In one of the recent livestreams the Devs said the basic flight suit would work for on-foot gameplay, but it’d be a bit like wearing your slippers when going for a walk - yes you could, but why would you?

I suppose those explorers out in the Black won’t be needing the combat or scavenger suits, but it’ll be interesting to see what the Explorer suit brings - will it be the specialist scanner device, like how the scavenger suit gets the cutter beam or the combat suit gets an extra main weapon slot?
