Preacher was definitely high up in the Alliance military ranking. Probably lead a double life as well since he wasn't hostile to the browncoats was he?
When the Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) appeared in Serenity, that’s just the sort of history I imagined for Shepard Book, it would be that trope of Wild West gunslinger turned Preacher kind of thing.

There have been a few comic collections released for Firefly-Serenity (some written by Whedon) which fill in the blanks (one is purely about Book) which I think are worth a read if you’re a fan - I felt some of the stories tended to suffer a bit from “Babylon 5 Season 4” syndrome, where plot threads need to be ended quickly before their time, but I’ve only read the first 4 collected editions and I’ve just found out there’s been a few more since I bought those. That’s Christmas sorted for me then!

I consider Firefly as "mandatory" literature for Sci Fi fans. IMO it belongs alongside Star Wars, BSG, B5 and Dune. I immediately got the "Mal" vibes when I first played ED. Fell in love with my Sidewinder. It's the only pre engeneered ship I've seen: because the duck tape is clearly visible! I don't know much about engeneering IRL but I do know the 2 most important vital tools in that field: duck tape and WD40.

It absolutely ticked me off to no end when they killed off the Preacher in Serenity....
Not only Shepherd Book but Wash. Back in 2005 with the movie Serenity I sent an email to Josh Whedon hating his decision to kill off two characters. We could back then send an email and he got it per a Browncoats website. Get us to emotionally care about characters then kill them for some artistic license in Hollywood? It hurt. For years I never watched another Josh Whedon project. Today I don't get close to any Hollywood written character.

Instead I go with the actors and the quality of their performance to entertain me. When their acting job ends I look to see what they did next and even before. EG Adam Baldwin (Jayne) makes me smile when I see him in other projects...and he did a lot. Remember him in 'Independence Day' shooting the glass at the underground Area 51 site to kill the alien? I leave the fantasy of the movie for a moment and smile thinking, "Hey, Adam is in this one!".

Gang's all here. Sit down and have a beer 🍻

Is Nathan Fillion standing on a box? Are Sean Maher and Summer Glau midgets?

(ans: Sean is 5'10", Sumer is 5'5" - Nathan Fillion 6'1" and always seems to be closer to the camera)

Morena Baccarin (Inara) is one of the most beautiful women on the planet and has a lovely Elite Dangerous website. ;)

My favourite though has to be Jewel Staite (Kaylee):

BTW - my favourite cast picture:

That's some nice photos you got there 👍 Didn't know that Morena Baccarin has an ED website! And yes, i liked that scene where Jewel Staite appeared in a kimono and parasol 😁

Didn't Nathan have this detective series after Firefly? Always meant to watch it but never got to somehow.

Castle - had lots of Firefly / Serenety references

I had a picture (can't locate it at the moment) of Jewel Staite dressed in a Dorothy Halloween costume - made me get a similar outfit for my gf one year. ;)

Random guy must be tired of Firefly emails by now. There's an Australian radio jock who gets mistaken for a US quarterback on his social media. He always plays it straight when that happens.

I couldn't make it past the first(pilot?) episode of Firefly. It was really bad I remember.
Perhaps it gets better?

If you can accept that it is basically cowboys in space then yes it gets better. If you cannot bear that then no you won't enjoy the various "western" themes. "I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you" has taken on a life of its own for example.

The "follow-up" movie Serenity (2005) - (not to be confused with the dire 2019 movie of the same name) is still a space-western but might be more palatable to sci-fi fans.

All the Firefly episodes entertained me a lot that I cannot pick a best one. The ship and the 'Verse was also a major character. Maybe it was the writing like a stand up 'story telling' comedian moving the audience to an expected outcome, then WHAM hitting them with an unexpected punch line. Every episode had some of that.

Can you pick the worst episode? For me it would probably be 'The Message'. It had a starting punch line opening up a crate sent to them to find a body. Great writing with lines starting with Jayne ," What’d y’all order a dead guy for? " to Malcolm, "You murdered yourself. I just carried the bullet a while.".

What made it sad was me knowing that during filming the actors found out that the series was cancelled. The snowy funeral at the ending was in part a tribute to the series. Firefly was a great moment in television and may inspire other writers in the future learning from it...or not. We as an audience will be watching.
