ANNOUNCEMENT Game Balancing Pt.3

I like how he implies that gankers don't need to be aware of game mechanics, both minimising TTK (to be effective in a gank) and earning credits (to build gankboats and pay for the rebuys when you inevitably screw up or get ganked yourself)

I might not see the fun in ganking but I definitely wouldn't dismiss them as clueless.

Tbh I gank very rarely. I find it funny though that he uses it as an argument in balancing discussion.

Exploration increase should be subtle, not very dramatic. There should be a separate Mining Rank in my opinion :)
Agree, explo is good as it is in my opinion said it before that been out there exploring with fc is pure joy, and earnings are more than sufficient, the upkeep costs feel like spare change compared to what can be made from selling data. ✌

One thing I would say about CZ rewards- I'd only put the extra payout on the larger and meaner ships, as encouragement to actually fight them rather than the easy Eagles and Asp Scout cannon fodder. Would scaling starting at say an Asp Explorer / Vulture and above make more sense maybe?
What about new players trying CZ’s for the first time? They buffed the low end bounties, if the low end CZ kills are not buffed it would leave the 2 activities out of sync on payouts.

We need to fill that gap between 20LY and 26000LY
there are still some longrange missions (~100, 120 ly) in the game.
they spawn rarely, and only under very special conditions.
my impression is, their slot is basically always eaten up by the abundance of other missions.
but i took one last week.

I like these changes!

Is the combat rank going to also be tied to ground combat in Odyssey? Or will there be a new rank for that? Only new one I remember being announced was the research one...

Granted. Although the ranks aren't dependent on each other, so I don't consider it a "balance" issue. I understand that trade especially seems far to quick and easy - that's not to say Combat should be made faster. It's "Elite" after all. Happy to receive feedback on this, as with everything else.

Why not give us new ratings to keep us busy? We could work to achieve a couple of new standards. Gold Elite and Platinum Elite. Lol. And whilst you're at it, set up a Jameson Arcade for Odyssey. We could play classic Elite and Elite 2: Frontier on the arcades. Excellent!

Lori Jameson doesn't provide any blueprints which aren't available elsewhere without the combat rank, though.

Her best blueprints are Sensors and DSS 5 (which lots of other engineers provide, including Lei Cheung who can be unlocked without firing a shot) ... everything else she does there's at least one other engineer who does it better and requires no or minimal combat to unlock.

Now, if you don't want to get Dangerous rank and you don't want to take a side-trip to Colonia, you're stuck with Martuuk's G1 SCBs, sure - but even the SCB blueprints aren't that much extra power on most builds compared with the massive increase in shield strength that Cheung or Vatermann can give.

(Is it slightly strange that the most difficult engineer to unlock in the game mostly has a bunch of fairly niche blueprints? I assume it's intentional.)

I'm pretty sure they already did this years ago. It'll be in one of the patch notes somewhere but I can't even remember if it was in 2.x or 3.x
You're right about the engineers. my bad.
I can't find any proof of that pts patch. afaik if you're a master and you kill a harmless you get 0 pts

I can't find it now either... sure I read it somewhere, though. One test would probably be on the squadron combat leaderboard - points there are based on the rank gain for the kill, so if you kill something Harmless and your squadron score doesn't change, you know it doesn't work.

hot take but what i'm noticing is that miners and traders are getting angry that something that requires genuine skill, training, and time investment is being properly rewarded. you chose to invest something that's low risk, it got nerfed because it was way too profitable for something that safe. trading and mining are both still viable careers, by far. this is elite dangerous. dangerous activities should be the most profitable. for the longest time thargoid profit wasn't even worth the time investment - now it is. :)

I want to start by saying the pay buffs to combat are long overdue, good, and welcome.

That said, I think this largely kills AX combat for me.

It's difficult to overstate how much I dislike grinding Guardian unlocks, and combat has always been a distant 3rd thing for me in Elite, though recently I'd started dipping my toes in some more after 2.5 years of doing mainly exploration and trade.

Scout hunting didn't require a whole lot of up-front investment, and the rank progression from it felt reasonable, even though I knew it'd take me several thousand kills to get there from Competent. I knew it wasn't going to be quick, but it actually made me think Elite combat might someday be attainable. It was something to work on here and there, taking an hour or two on a random evening as the mood struck me among all the other things I usually do.

But with the nerf to rank, I'll probably just end up selling off or repurposing my AX Krait and once more give up on any thoughts of reaching combat Elite. It was too much of a grind as it was, but it at least felt attainable. And I don't enjoy it enough to put in the amount of slog required to ever get there 'organically'.

I suppose that just makes me "too casual" or something, but other Elite ranks can be realistically attained with a couple of years of normal, casual, and varied gameplay. That combat can not feels rather out of place. It's a bit discouraging, overall.

In short, I think something is very broken with combat progression, and people gravitating toward the least painful method is simply a symptom of the deeper problem. Closing off that path doesn't fix anything, and arguably makes the overall situation worse.

Take it for what you will, I'll likely still be around doing something else, somewhere.
