Game loses something by not forcing Open play

before they can force people into open play they have to sort out basic multiplayer elements of the game.
You need to be able to play "with" your friends. not with them for a moment but mid battle some of them have dropped into a different instance.
Also put in a proper convoy system so you can fly with your friends. drag 1 out of supercruise whole group comes out too. so your friend has a big shpment to haul. he pays you and some others a small fee. and you escort him. a nice idea for this is if you leash your ship to his somehow and he controls you ship while its in supercruise. he also pays the fuel costs for the jump. this would also allow your friends to come rescue you when you make that silly jump without enough fuel to get out of a system and find it has no petrol station and you have no scoop. also if you have a small ship that cant make a jump distance they can help move your ship.

Yeah, when they finally get grouping with friends working, ED really needs a proper grouping or formation flying mechanic. Something much the same as is available in EVE would be good where you can link your ships together and all jump and super cruise as one unit. Being able to create large ship formations like in Homeworld for instance would also be darn cool.

I hope formations will not be implemented unless its only as an indicator on your scanner as to where your position should be to keep formation. I certainly wouldn't want position in formation to be automatic. I'd want to use my flying skills to maintain it.

Explain how, with examples.

Any player who would otherwise play solo only occasionally playing open necessarily brings an additional player, and hence diversity, to open. Example: me. I cannot commit to playing open only, so I'm either solo only or I play both, via mode-switching.

You tell me, I'm not the one using them to justify playing in a group.

You brought the word "problems" into the conversation; if neither of us know to which problems you were referring, we can just drop this subtopic.

Explain how, with examples.

Any player who would otherwise play solo only because they don't enjoy PvP occasionally playing open for whatever reason necessarily brings an additional non-PvP player to open. Examples: any of the anti-PvP people who are petitioning for mode switching.

I'm not sooooooooo for solo, I'd just like it to be available for the occasional times I don't feel like mixing with other players. That's "players", not griefers, pirates, PKers, or whatever else, just players. I'm not afraid of other players, I'm not anti-PvP, I'm not looking for "zero risk" solo grinding (which is handy, because it doesn't exist). Just sometimes I want to be alone. I may fancy a skirmish without knowing that I'll automatically become the #1 target just because my scanner blip is hollow. Sometimes I don't want to have to worry that I might inadvertently steal a kill from another player. Or that I crash into someone on the way out of a station, wiping out an hour of their play. Other times, I may fancy grouping up with my friends, who have already decided not to play open.

There are plenty more examples, but I'm not going to list them all yet again.

Then it's the physical effort of pushing the button, I knew it!

No, it's reasons such as above. Please don't be so dismissive of those with whom you disagree.

And your problem is that I'm talking about how solo and open play are essentially the exact same thing.

That is a problem, yes, because it's not true.

So you're asking for something you have. Yes, that is blowing my mind.

Well there you go. That is not what I am asking for. I am asking for people not to take away what I already have.

But I dont want to play with other people.
I want to fly around, mine and explore. I do not wish to participate with other players.

The argument about "play solo get op ship" is pretty much irrelevant, you can fly off away from hub areas, do missions or mine there and get your op ship safely anyway. The game is not balanced around this.
What you could argue for is that each mode "solo"/"open" should have a separate character. That I can somewhat agree with.

I would like to have another solo mode, without NPC at all. So I can explore enjoy the galaxy without buying expensive weapons und defences.
Just having a nice relaxing flight, when Im coming home from work.

It doesn't need to force open play, but it should have a seperate character for each mode, so you can't just switch modes when you want to do something with no player risk. For instance if I switch to solo from open, I spawn in with whatever I last had in solo not open.

The thing that the risk adverse don't get is, grab 2 buddies and all of the sudden you are much stronger. The game is huge. The chance of meeting an armed and determined group over stragglers is entirely on you. The nature of the game and combat makes 2 vs 1 hard. Then 3v1 then 4 and so on.

The reason I would like to see an only open is IMO it would create communities considering the P2P shard kinda thing going on. There would geographical groups seeded and further integrated with global friends.

I want to be a pirate hunter. Escort dude. Merc. Can't do that without customers.

We need more reasons to play open. Adding some things you can do to help over players would be great. Like Hyperspace Piggybacking, Refueling and Drive repairs.

"Separate Online, Private Group, and Solo into distinct characters "....YES...yes....so it should be.

The current solution is a minus for the game.

Utterly agree.

Linking them is a real minus for me I just cannot understand the decision behind this. Was it to "protect" a minority of "sensitive people" from the "hoards" of player "grieferz" that apparently infest the game? Genuine question.

If they insist on keeping it then there should be a benefit for playing your time online though I have no idea what that might be. Maybe that's as daft an idea as linking the game modes in the first place :\

Freedom of choice for the person playing the game, not others deciding how that person should play.

Having separate characters for different would not limit the choice of the player. It would force the player to stay in the same mode if the player would not want to start over.
If people can switch freely between modes, I think some of the possible player interaction might get lost, at the gain of more player freedom. I'm not sure that freedom is always a good thing, though.

Also, I think it's a bit silly to talk about others deciding how you play. FD decides how you play, they are the ones making the game. I don't think that this in itself matters in this discusssion.

That person still has freedom of choice, they just can't toggle pvp to abuse the system. If that person wants to play solo they still can. If that person wants to play open they still can.
