getting to elite in combat

What is needed to get from Deadly to Elite in combat?
I am at 70% and it usually takes 2 - 2,5 million for 1% advance
but the last one took 3.3 million.
Is it independent of money and just on elite/deadly kills?

Are you using an SLF pilot? I only found out the other day that in addition to the constant outrageous monetary cost, they also suck 50% of your combat experience, making it twice as hard to rank up when they're being used. Needless to say my SLF pilot is now queuing up in the unemployment line instead of lying around the pilots lounge and sipping margaritas while getting 10% of everything I ever make. Nice game design FD, punish us for using your game features why dont you.

Oh, and do keep an eye out for Thargoid Scouts. Got some nice percentage points killing those in Deciat, when they were still haunting that space.

Pretty much to rank up you can only kill ships a certain amount of rank lower than you. It's been awhile since I've hit Elite in combat so I forgot how much lower enemy ships can be compared to you but that's also why ranking up is slower for you because those harmless ships aren't giving you any rank in combat.

I also heard that thargoid scout ships are a good way to rank up your combat ranking and with those you can use normal weapons to fight them so you don't have to do any kind of anti-thargoid loadouts if you don't want to.

This! 1000 scout kills was about 70% advancement from deadly to elite. I prefered not to go to cz looking for high ranked npc's (you advance more killing an elite or deadly ship - bounty/bond amount does not matter)

cheers

I am at 70% ...

For your last 30% you need to kill:
489 Thargoid scouts, or;
534 Elite ships, or;
667 Deadly ships, or;
890 Dangerous ships, or;
1335 Masters, or;
2670 Experts.

I finished my rank off with the Thargoid scouts since every scout you meet is guaranteed to be the same rank, unlike trying to find only Elite rank ships.

Thanks for the info.
Unfortunately I do not have horizons so do not see Thargoid ships.
I hang around a Nav beacon and get the occasional elite more deadlies etc.
I guess I'll just have to be patient. I was worried that 3.1 had changed things.

Here is a chart on the Elite Dangerous Wikia. Is it still accurate? Maybe. Is it maybe the only representation of the points awarded for each kill by rank? Maybe again. YMMV.

There's a point in rank advancement where as though you can kill a lesser rated pilot, you don't get the credit for the kill towards your advancement in rank. You do however still get the bounties, just the the kill credit. Thus one can't kill a gazillion harmless and make elite. There's a page somewhere that shows at what rank one stops receiving credits toward their own rank advancement for killing someone with less rank.

The SLF pilot takes *half* of combat XP?!??! :eek:

Fuuuuuuuuuu ...

Question: Do you need to get credits for those kills to get XP? Or do you also get XP from killing ships in Anarchy systems?

No you get the XP when you they explode, although as the chart on the previous page shows, as you get to high combat ranks, some low level kills give you nothing at all. And yes if you have an SLF pilot, whatever combat experience you do get is halved. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

As I understand it the size of ship is irrelevant to promotion, an Elite Sidewinder is worth every bit as much as an Elite Anaconda.
