Wow, was it that many? I noticed there was a discrepancy between them too and have been importing missing systems into the EDAstro database from EDDB too.
Yes, I was surprised. These are the full figures as at 17 Jan..
number of stars in edsm = 58,128,232 (including some duplicate names)
number of stars in eddb = 43,432,559 (does not have duplicates afaik)

number of stars in common = 42,876,394

number of stars in edsm only = 15,251,838
number of stars in eddb only = 556,165

stars in both EDSM and EDDB = 58,684,397

I also discovered for the HIP merging project, that it takes longer to create a common db file than it does to process both dbs individually.
Now I have the tools, I'm thinking of downloading Spansh's 36GB database to analyse that as well.

In the early days you could add data to EDDB manually, is it possible some of that accounts for the discrepancy?

Weekly update:
I'm currently a university student and classes began this week, so I will not make particularly fast progress, but I hope to still continue mapping my slice. :)

the following stars were not included in the data from last week, I am keeping data separate from week to week to avoid duplicate entries.

I am currently revisiting systems visited too soon after the EDSM server swap, since their data was not properly logged/lost when reverting.

in total, this will put me up to 43 systems visited and 42 newly catalogued to EDSM (I think - havent been tracking how many are new to edsm, just checking the data is all on edsm)

once again, my working sheet is: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nUg2dYU8E2Zy7QSRDuwQBlEQBuxiMXKeP4SSdyX2HzM/edit?usp=sharing
I am keeping the summary sheet up to date, and just copy-pasting the new information here once a week.

HIP 19621 exists as a system in-game, but HR 1279 has a secondary label as HIP 19621 as well. Edit: This was caused by a typo. HIP 19621 is HIP 19621, no issues here.
HIP 35914 links to BD-12 1172, the Spirograph nebula with the O7 V at its center. This is obviously not BD+21 1590, a G0 star.

Now the real exploring begins. ;)

I'd like to join in. I've been visiting HIP stars for a while now, concentrating on the low numbered ones - I've visited just over 9000 of those with four or fewer digits. I'm currently hopping around below the bubble in my carrier trying to find a route to HIP 82 (I don't think there is one, the closest system seems to be HD 666, and it's 690ly further), so I won't be able to start immediately. I would like to claim a slice though - is slice 23 still available?

I'll have to go through my records to see if there are any systems I've visited that have custom names - I've already noticed one. HIP 7 is in-game as Deeli's Point for some reason. It's not like there's anyone living there or anything particularly interesting in the system.

That seems quite low to be reachable, I usually find near the bubble once you get down to the minus 2,000 it starts to get difficult, but minus 4,000+ you would need to be seriously lucky, the only thing might be a path of HIP stars trailing down that way but unlikely.

Yes, slice 23 is still available.
Welcome aboard.

For sure. When I got to HD 666 I found HIP 82 was actually another 730ly further. EDSM knew of no stars in between, and I couldn't find any in the galaxy map. (Not that that means there aren't any, as you know it's really difficult to find any stars at all when they are so sparse. I'd like to pick endlessfalls' brain about how they managed it - many of the systems down here were tagged by them). I've given up that quest for now, I'll try again another time (perhaps FDev will introduce a Guardian FSD booster for carriers).

The lowest I've reached is HD 6428, 4850ly down. Of course endlessfalls had been there first.

Here come two systems from Slice 25 with issues.

HIP 39392, in game as BD+03 3861, and HIP 51658, in game as Andbephi. Both are populated, but with a population of zero. They both are pre-discovered, but do not have a Nav Beacon. Thus I can't transmit the data to EDSM by honking them.

I have mapped the planets as a partial solution.
I don't have any ideas what to do about the stars. There must be (or must have been) a solution. BD+03 3861 A, BD+03 3861 Asteroid Belt A and Andbephi C are known on EDSM.

Any suggestions?

Thank you very much. Rows 102590 to 103589 in progress. Now that Jackie has left is there a different spreadsheet to update, or should I send my results to you?
There is no other main spreadsheet to update (yet).

Many commanders have created their own spreadsheets for just their own rows. TBH the main ss is very cumbersome to edit on the fly.
If your own spreadsheet can be shared, then I can connect to that and get the data from there. That is the easiest method.

Or you can post your lists here. All I really need are lists of stars with special names, not found, unreachable (pref. with coordinates).
You may also find some permit locked. The rest are picked up automatically from EDSM/EDDB as you visit them.

HIP 39392 is in the EDSM downlload. But the BD+03 3861 name is not in the main spreadsheet, which is surprising because many BD catalogue stars are.
If it had been then we would have picked it up already. Andbephi is already on EDSM as you said, but the name is not in the spreadsheet.

So, I have added both these stars to my named star list, and they will be included in the merge process later today.

A large proportion of HIP stars have already been pre-discovered in ED, but only a fraction of those are on EDSM.
I'm not sure about needing a nav beacon to transmit data to edsm. I've never scanned a nav beacon to do that. (But I don't see many nav beacons either)
If the star is pre-discovered, bujt not fully described on EDSM (or even present) then I scan the whole system again with the FSS.

Which is even more surprising than I thought. Both EDDB and EDSM have increased, both significantly, and separately.
It shows there are ongoing differences between EDSM and EDDB, ie there are commanders adding to EDDB and EDSM separately, and other commanders adding to both.

So whatever the cause of the discrepancy, I don't think it's a historical artifact.

Also, nearly half a million new stars added this week. Not bad considering the majority of commanders don't use these tools.

I mean pre-discovered as in all bodies set to known on first entry to a populated system by FDev (e.g. Sol), not as in I someone else has discovered the system before me. (Although Sol's bodies are pre-mapped as well.)

I run EDDiscovery, and when I visit a system that is pre-discovered, it just shows up empty on the main tab. A nav beacon scan updates my journals, and EDD can read them. Mapping a planet does update the journals as well, but only for that particular mapped body.
Before I sent the data for BD+03 3861 off any data to EDSM/EDDN, the system itself was known on EDSM, but only the main star, asteroid beld, 1 and 3h were known to EDSM. (Notably the eighth moon of the gas giant 3 h, maybe from mapping by the Raxxla Potato Hunt.)
First, I sent my logs to EDSM -> no change. Second I sent the event data off to EDDN -> bingo, update.

Nothing is of spectacular value in that system. No stations, no planetary outposts, and only gas giants/icy bodies. I guess after the "first mapped" tags were taken, nobody connected with EDDN ever bothered mapping it.

I tried to move up really close to Andbephi A, so Auto Scan should trigger, but it didn't in any way (propably because pre-discovered). I did not try zooming in on the stars in the FSS, that could be something worth trying.
