Glorious HIPs - 3306

I have just updated the new spreadsheet. 384 new names were added.
Also updated the spreadsheet for unexplored stars by slice, I gave simplfied this spreadsheet to just show the slice number, HIP and HD names and their approximate coordinates.

I am thinking of reviewing the remaining slices with the lowest completion %ages, with a view to opening them up to a wider audience by grouping them together by galacttic region names, and indicating, for instance, which stars are easiest to reach using their approximate coordinates. If anyone desperately wants to keep their original slice areas, please let me know.

And here are the latest stats ...

Here is a colorful map I made of all the unexplored HIP stars within 3000ly of Sol.
There are about 3000 stars on the plot. I don't know the exact number, but it is below 3700.
The yellow stars are above the galactic plane and the blue stars below.

the sectors are clearly visible. So there are bright patches where little has been explored,
and some blank sectors where almost every HIP star has been accounted for.

The coordinates are taken from approximations in the original HIP catalogue, not ED.
Although they are accurate to within a few percent, they are not precisely where ED places them.
Some stars will not have primary HIP names, but will have HD or HR etc names.

The data is also in the latest unexplored stars spreadsheet.

Neat visualization! I wonder if that cluster of blue in the mid-lower right corresponds mainly to unreachable stars inside the Col 70 etc locked sectors.

Non of these stars have been identified as unreachable or permit locked. So the only way to find out is to try and plot them on galmap or even visit them.
They shouldn't be too difficult to find on the unexplored stars spreadsheet.

I had some time this weekend to look into this, since I was curious, and it seems my hypothesis was correct. Searching for the 344 unmatched entries in slice 29, 80-90% were either permit locked inside Col 70/Col 121, not found, or unreachable. I did take notes, so I'll post my results in a little bit so you can update the list.

EDIT: big table in the spoiler

Note that in that table, if the star exists but the name is "-", that means I didn't note the name on the map being different from HIP xyz. Definitely missed a handful that are actually HD abc, since I didn't make any notes on stars that were neither locked nor otherwise notable.

I have again just updated the new spreadsheet. 675 new names were added.
Also updated the spreadsheet for unexplored stars by slice - 3000+ stars remaining.

Despite the fairly long time since the previous update, significant progress is still being maintained.
Thanks to Maolagin's data in the previous post, slice 29 has seen a 55% jump in stars identified.

Also, I have plotted a route though the remaining 3000+ unexplored stars on the spreadsheet and have been following that route as it winds its' way close to the bubble. This route is independent of the slices, so many slices have been crossed.
It is slow going following this route even though many of the stars are less than 200ly apart.
I aim only to do the first thousand on the route, and I am currently on about star 400 out of the 1000.
I will publish the remaining route as soon as possible. Probably split into a number of smaller routes about 500 stars long.
If you can't wait, all the stars and approximate positions are on the unexplored stars spreadsheet.

Thanks for the update Cmdr..

Re slices 30 and 31 - I believe these are complete - I've visited all systems that can be reached by ship or FC and have identified those that cannot be reached. Unless I've missed something, these should be marked as complete..

If I have missed anything, let me know what and I'll rectify as soon as I've finished Jackie Silver's slice 17 (may want to update the sheet as JS isn't in game any more).

I found 14 stars missing from the merge....

30 HIP 17712 not found
30 HIP 31700 8 Nu-3 Canis Majoris not 8 Nu-2 Canis Majoris
30 HIP 9552 not found

31 HIP 20943 CT Eridani B , exists but get plot error
31 HIP 24263 HD 33935, unreachable (7490,-6123,-5740)
31 HIP 31593 not found
31 HIP 33316 97 G. Canis Major ,unreachable (4590,-889,-3300) FC?
31 HIP 35305 NGC 2360 MCL 13
31 HIP 37379 140 Puppis
31 HIP 37772 Faust 538
31 HIP 42835 F Hydrae
31 HIP 48552 9 Sextantis
31 HIP 6215 not found
31 HIP 8698 not found

For one reason or another (probably me) these stars were not listed on the appropriate reference files.
But I have now added them to the unreachable, not found and named stars files as appropiate.

They will be included in the next analysis.

Very nice. Since taking a break from doing the HIP stars I have been visiting as many of the unvisited KOI catalog stars as possible, up in the thousands now. I made a surprising discovery, many of the stars in the KOI catalog were already in EDSM but with bad data. Some system had all the planets and stars recorded correctly, but no first discovery name attached to them. Others had a first visitor name attached but no body information at all, no stars, no planets or moons. So basically a blank entry with just a system name.

This of course set me back quite a bit and I found myself adding a lot of systems that otherwise were already in EDSM simply to correct the bad data. With Orvidius help in pulling a list of systems with no primary stars listed I started redoing areas I had already finished. Altogether the list Orvidius made for me came to over 20 millions systems without a main star listed and also presumably with no data on other bodies in the systems.

I've done a quick check and the number of HIP catalog stars in this list comes to around 6,000, which is rather annoying when looking at all the effort put in to update the EDSM database with the HIP catalog stars.

For instance entering HIP 99447 in EDSM will give us this;

1639228840361.jpeg

The name of the first discoverer Pingouin Masque and the system coordinates, but no star, no planets, no moons and no asteroid belts.

I don't know about any of you but I find after all the work I and other have put in on the HIP project this just leaves a feeling of a half done job. If no-one else has the desire to do so I may just have to visit all these unfinished systems myself.

Anyway I am now a good way through my current project so if you are still going when I finish I will be available to help finish off, I just needed a break from the HIP stars for a while and this has been quite an enjoyable experience, what with finding Via Gravitatis and all. Well just touching base with you all, have fun.

More than happy to help whittle down the 6000 systems if needed. If you can provide a list of 1000 systems, I'll commence once I've completed slice 17.

Thanks, nice to hear from you.

This made me wonder what data the Spansh db holds for these stars. I only hold a list of the up-to-date names and coordinates - not the full data - so I just started a full download of the Spansh db. It's around 60GB in size so will take a while.

TBH, I think Jackie Silver was only really interested in the coordinates of the systems, her spreadsheet doesnt have any further details of the systems. Which is a shame if we can't create a fully comprehensive catalogue of them. Rest assured that I personally always scan all the planets, and at least one planet fully mapped and "first footed" now.

If and when we can get all the HIPs onto EDSM, or Spansh, then it will be possible to create a fully populated db.

<edit> The Spansh entry for HIP 99447 is the same as that in EDSM. And there are 22353190 entries with zero bodies. I didn't count the HIP names, because many of them have HD or other designations which means the HIP number doesnt show up in the data.

My list probably need to be updated now since it's a couple of months old, I wil ask Orvidius if he can produce a new list and he can post it a link to it, but can't do it right now, other demands, will sort it later today.

It seems Orvidius has been keeping it up to date, the data file is here;

Updated weekly, 18m rows, seems we've cut some down since the first one, although I doubt it was me alone, I haven't visited a couple of million systems yet!.

18m rows, but
file with "non proc gen names" has "only" 144k rows.
Interesting, how many of this 18m systems without primary star are in both files. So no primary star AND non proc gen name. (or even catalog systems, so something like 20k rows less).

Wouldn't be to hard to do for someone with the necessary skills in scripting, all you are doing is comparing 2 files and deleting data that doesn't appear in both.

By my count, there's currently 12973 system IDs in the catalog systems file that also appear in the missing main stars file. They break down by source catalog as:

Since im in the bubble, finishing up the reachable stars in slice 34. Should be done by today and tomorrow.
There are still 2800 unexplored HIP stars in the spreadsheet.

If you would like to carry on with another slice, I have updated the unexplored stars speadsheet in a new format..
The spreadsheet is still ordered by slice, but within each slice the stars are ordered so that they can be followed as a route.
The routing algorithm is the "nearest neighbour not already visited", which seems to work reasonably well.

There are some long routes and a few short ones. If would like to follow a route, feel free to choose one, and let me know here.

edit 1: I also updated the new spreadsheet , but haven't done the statistics yet as there were only about 40 new entries (mostly Arnoldo's and mine)
edit 2: Reminder that the X,Y,Z values in the unexplored stars spreadsheet are calculated from the original star catalogue, not actual ED positions, and therefore may not be accurate.
