Got Bounty for attacking wanted Ships!

I can't wrap my Brain around the new Crime and Punishment System. Did I encounter a new Bug or intended Feature?

My Story:
I took a wing mission to kill 10 Pirates in another system. I thought i would take them out alone with no problem. Fund that the mission marker was on a ringed planet with High RES, what seems to bee very convenient for bounty hunting. I scanned some ships and found a Gunship that was wanted and marked as mission target. Scan was finished, as i even took the time to subtarget the Drive. When i opened Fire i gained a Bounty of 200CR and some other ships turned red as well. I did not take the time to ask them what they wanted and left the area immediately. Back in Supercruise I logged out and came here.

So what are my consequences now? Did I get Notority points? Is Bounty hunting in some systems illegal? Can this mission type be completed in a legal manner?

UPDATE:
So I payed off the bounty and completed the mission with out further problems. So maybe it was the SLF i hit. But I am fairly sure that there was no friendly in my line of fire.

THX for all the helpful replies!

Maybe the faction those pirates are aligned with is the controlling faction of the system you're in, and thus they issued a bounty on you in their territory?

The second ship could have been an SLF launched by the Gunship, or some other ship you got caught out by a FF issue. If it was a FF thing, just go pay off the bounty at an IF contact. Check your Notoriety, if it is at zero, you're good. If the second 'red' ship was an associated SLF I can't say why you got a bounty. I have seen reports of misapplied bounties, but I'm guessing, because of the amount of the fine, that you got a 'Reckless Weapons Discharge" bounty some how.

That's not possible. A wanted ship is wanted in that jurisdiction. Period.

Out of curiosity, did that Gunship happen to launch a fighter? I happened to get a bounty by shooting an SLF as it launched from a wanted Gunship in a HighRes the other day, so it's possible that the crime/scan status of the SLF is messed up with respect to the mothership. Not sure if anyone has bug reported it yet though.

If it was a gunship or any other ship that can launch fighters, you will get a bounty for hitting the launched fighter before you scan it. For some reason, it doesn't seem to count as "wanted" even if the mothership is.

Sounds like a bug. Report it and maybe support can sort it out. Regardless when your notoriety is zero go visit an Interstellar Factor office in Anarchy or Low Sec and pay the bounty. Problem will be solved.

Are you sure about that? I'm not disputing it outright, maybe I've been lucky, I only ask cos it's never happened to me.

That WAS an issue some time ago, but IIRC, it was fixed. I recently killed several SLFs, without any consequences. They were red when they were launched, and when they popped, no bounty on my head.

Must have been another bug.

This was a bug when SLF's were originally introduced and was patched out early on. It does seem to have re-appeared in 3.0 as it happened to me a couple of nights ago. I know it wasn't a standard friendly fire incident as there were no other ships around just me and an FGS. I had already scanned the FGS with my KWS and had it's shields down to 30% when the SLF launched. Because of the way we were positioned the SLF spawned directly between me and the FGS and as soon as my shots hit the SLF I got a fine and a wanted symbol.

You should not have to wrap your brain around the new crime system, as it functions almost identically to the old one in terms of how bounties are applied. It also sounds like you did everything correctly: you scanned the target and waited for the wanted status to appear.

Your attack should not have caused a crime. If this happens again, you should definitely submit a ticket.

As for your consequences: since you did not murder anyone your Notoriety will not have increased. Assuming it is zero, you can visit any Interstellar Factors and they will let you clear the bounty.

That makes sense, I was 'on a break' when horizons launched. ;)

I've had this happen 5 times this week, always against a FGS or Anaconda in a Rez - I am certain it occurs when the SLF is launched after I aggro the scanned mothership.

Its been happening quite regularly past few days. Last night fer example, on a mission, interdicted by a wanted ship who fires without warning...not the controlling faction btw. The second ye fire a single shot in defence, bounty issued and yer wanted fer trying to defend against something else thats wanted and aggressive.

That just doesnt make sense...so its illegal to use self defence? Only legal option I can see is to run or die...wont be long before that incurs a bounty too the way things are going ^

It happened to me on the very first day of launch (which was so bad for me that I've written a grammatically-contrived rant). After I've got this bounty for shooting (a confirmed WANTED) pirate in the ring, being very annoyed having had to travel to broker to clear it & back to home system - I've stopped playing since, considering "probably another launch-teething issue" (my log was empty with single {} in it btw). But I see its still happening so maybe not so much of launch-overload-fluke as some people led me to believe originally.

Did you have “Report Crimes against me” turned on?
Don’t know if this was the issue or if it’s even an issue. Or the OP was dealing with a bug.
