When people are forced to use third party tools to communicate in an MMO, it's usually a sign of bad design. I guess there are such odd games (I am not aware of one), so I'd kindly ask you to point me to MMO game which doesn't have guilds/clans, and corresponding guild/clan (text) chat channels.
Why should they do that? Just give players sets of pre-defined symbols/elements which can be combined into layers, thus forming a final decal. Surely, some of the creativity would be lost, but if the number and variety of these elements are big enough, people will be able to create pretty unique decals. No additional work for FD, and no worries about the content and compatibility of player-made decals with lore and the general look of the game world. This has been done in other games and it works like a charm.
Grouping has little to no meaning if there are no common goals incorporated and supported by the game mechanics. Building outposts (not the stations) could be one of those. See, if you don't give people any factual reason to group and work together, then it all comes down to most trivial pew-pew just for the sake of it. I tend to believe that ED is, or should try to be at least a little bit more serious than any generic free to play online shooter, or PvE-focused theme parks where you're supposed to kill rats all day long, and be happy about it.
Firstly I didn't mention the word MMO - I said most SERIOUS multiplayer clans use teamspeak or similar - where does that statement mention traditional MMO functionality?
It doesn't because my point is that anyone who is willing and serious about grouping up will use a 3rd party tool because they generally work better than in game coms.
In fact I didn't even mention the word MMO because I consider ED to be doing it's own thing, which is something I'm very happy with so far.
Second point - yes we could go down the 'make your own phallic symbol decal route' but I've seen it in enough games to know that it doesn't take long for offensive 'art' to appear... I've seen it happen in enough games to know it doesn't work like a charm.
Third point - again with the assumption that your opinion is the only one that matters. I want to influence and be part of the universe they have given us; I don't want to be a part of a universe that you and your mates have built.
I want to be worried about getting on the wrong side of a big faction like the Feds; I don't want to be worried about getting on the wrong side of Fat Bobs Slimmers World guild.
It's also heartening to know that all the hard work done in Lugh has all just been mindless pew pew. Apparently it won't become legitimate and factual until we can name our own minor and major factions who can physically take over any and all systems and their stations. Worrying though it is to find out that all the time I thought I was having fun - I really wasn't!?
To say that what we are able to do so far has no meaning, and that there are no common goals until guilds arrive and take over really doesn't take into account what large parts of the playerbase are already (happily) doing with the factions.
I think people should sit back and see what FD have planned for the factions we already have.
Hopefully we'll be able to actually join them soon; and if done correctly we should all get something we are happy with (that FD can retain overall control over).
Anyway I've put my thoughts down and won't be arguing further - FD will do what they want; I've seen plenty of doom mongering round here about how ED will fail unless it does x or y. So far ED hasn't died or imploded despite not giving in to all the demands of internet experts everywhere.
