HOTAS Support

I have just bought the Thrustmaster HOTAS 4 in anticipation of the PS4 Elite Dangerous release; seems very similar to the previous PC/PS3 version, except that the buttons on the base of the thrust controller are 'PS' 'share' and 'options' (none of which can be customised for in-game functions, I assume, apart from maybe the 'options' button?).

So I can't help wondering, with its more limited button layout, how will the game's complex and varied controls be covered by this flight stick? Even with the PC I have to use the keyboard for additional functions which couldn't be mapped to the stick. How will this work with the PS4 version? I also hope that the controller configuration can be customised, as I have gotten so used to my current PC layout...

That said, being a PS4 owner as well, I couldn't resist getting the HOTAS 4 for this game. Elite Dangerous is a perfect fit for this controller, IMO.

I can't see why there would not be remapping options.

As for the limited buttons, I was concerned as well, but designating one button as a "shift" button opened up the T.Flight for me. Should be more than enough.

Thanks for the tip on designating a 'shift' button! That opens up many more possibilities, indeed... ;)

Yeah, the shift buttons are great. This is already how the Xbox controller works on that console.

As for HOTAS... Got my X52 working today again because I was missing it. A gamepad just doesn't hold a candle to even the most basic HOTAS in this game.

If you can get one of these things, do it. You will not regret it. Even if technically, like me, you're a better pilot with the pad, a HOTAS is just a lot more fun & engaging.

Thankfully warthunder is abit poor! The thrustmaster is awesome tho :)

The wife only paid 53 quid for it off amazon and it's an absolute steal! I remember paying 80 quid for a ms sidewinder about 20 odd years ago (still works lol) but this stick is a different class.

The xbox version has very user customisable controls so this stick will be awesome when configured :)

I ended up using my steering wheel stand and a couple of elastic bands as an impromptu setup from my armchair lol but it was very comfy and natural so a Deffo thumbs up from me 👍

My wife will probably laugh and point at me even more than when I have the psvr hat on :D

But... I nabbed one at £53.
Less than the price of a new triple-a game with obligatory season pass anyway... (justified luxury purchase qualification outside spousal eyebrow raising pre-approval? Tick ✅)

Now that I am more or less done with my Hotas fixing and parts are rolling in, I realy can´t wait giving it a test flight with ED ( and hopefully with PSVR as well!!! )

MFD´s and such will be added now that I have a measure to design them along...

Is that an iPad mount?

Sure, in some games is use the iPad as moving map etc.. For Elite maybe as trading computer...
Left and right of the iPad there will be MFD's (my own design) wich are similar to the Thrustmaster Cougars but with some extra features. Below and in front of the sticks there will be additional buttons and touch pads reassembling to some extend the pilot seat config of Elite.

Later on I even might add some gauges like altimeter, air speed indicator and such ( these won't work for PS 4 since there is no easy way to send the data from the PlayStation to these )

Sure, the T.Flight offers a Total of three rudder options:

3) real rudder called TFRP (99€) wich can be plugged into a special port on the stick
[…]
TFRP is working on PS4 as well ( for War thunder right now but not in EVE )
Allready made a lot of progress in building a "Poor Man´s Cockpit" based on HOTAS and the Playseat Challenge PS4 Edition:

None the less this is a lot of fun since the seat adapts well with the T.Flight as well as the TFRP!!!

Hello everybody, this is my first post. I have been an avid lurker in this thread and I am fascinated by your project @iadesdragon!
Do you think the TFRP will be supported in the PS4 version? What does everybody else think?

I hope they will support it right away. It works for War Thunder so this should only be a few lines of code and testing!

I'll start a separate thread on my Playseat Simpit soon. Have a look to the https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/338727-Are-you-ready-for-ED-on-the-PlayStation

Hey guys. I've decided to try a HOTAS again, so I'm going to buy a HOTAS X today!

For PC naturally, but if my choices in gaming are anything to go by, a stick built for a console will be more my cup of tea.

IF you are pkannjng to usr it on the PS4, DO NOT GET THE HOTAS X! The x is for the ps3. The "T" is the only one that will work on the ps4.

That custom mount for the PlaySeat Challenger is looking great! Hmmm...if 1000 players send in $40 each maybe can we get it by Christmas...

Yes that would be the plan :) hopefully even earlier then Christmas. One it gets funded it'll be 3-4 weeks to get "first of tool" wich could go to beta testers ( like about 20 ). And if ( hopefully ) no big changes are required for the tools mass production could go right away.

The he big question is about the HOTAS Adapters. Right now I'm doing some made for fine Wood by CNC Milling and these are for the T.Flight HOTAS 4 ( and should fit the X as well ).

i have actually noc clue how much these will be since these are not done designing. also, which other HOTAS would you guys and gals like to see? ( Not on PS4 however )

If everything goes well I'll have the Prototyp ready by Easter to show real live pictures of the completed Mounts and also can give an more specific info on possible pricing of a Kickstarter

If I think about the total number of Sim Players (not only ED on PS4) here on ED and other Games like EVE, WT, Falcon4 etc... finding at least a thousand players wanting one should be a teachable goal. If the first indications will give I might even raise the minimum order to 2000 Units somit will get even cheaper for everyone ( the ~20.000€ tooling is 20€ per person on 1000 )

At least, if it performs as I believe it will this is the closest you can get to a real pilots seat on an PS 4 :) at least for now.

I'll post some more details on the actual design of the Stick Adapters and the way the T.Flight attaches to it tonight. You will see it is like actually becoming a pice of the chair by means once all screws are tightened.

@Hooplah now you made my brain thinking :) originally i did premium design over cost on this since i did not plan to do more than one set. But while you and others showed interest in it i might re-think it for producibility and cost.

Luckily i was able to get a nice spring time walk with the family dogs in the afternoon ( seldom occurrence ) and that always gives perfect time to let the mind go therefore i came up with some great ideas how to rationalize the original design and also get rid of some things i don´t like about it right now.

First of all i can reduce part count then i can make the Joystick Adapters in a way that they can cost effectively be molded from plastic as well instead of building them from CNCed Wood ( expensive ) and third, i can make another set of Adapters from Sheet Metal Aluminum that should be able to support allmost all other HOTAS on the market ( old and new ) to be attached.

So plan is, i will finalize the actuall Prototyp of mine and test drive those intensively this will enable me to show you how it´s working out with / without VR.

If then still there is ( enough ) intresst i will go for the endeavor to re-design them for mass production ( wich i did not plan to do so far ) along the way i will also be able to give a prove indication but 40$ + Tax + Shipping might well be in reach for the T-FLight Only Version if we get at least 1000 People to what one.

The second set for the throttle side just arrived :)

and folded seat with both mounting clips installed :)

quit satisfied with the come out so far... NEED to make the Adapter Design complete tonight so a friend of mine can CNC them out of the wooden planks :). Can´t wait to test drive i tell'ya!!!!

@Hooplah now you made my brain thinking :)...

It seems that your brain is working great without my help. Good for you as I worry about mine a lot!

Per other controllers weight is a problem. Even with the best solid mount the light weight Playseat Challenge chair will have issues. There will be a weight limit. As an example the Thrustmaster Warthog is just too heavy for such a light chair. I mounted the Warthog joystick to the very solid center plate. A fast rotate to the stop and the whole chair moves with me in it (me weighing 165 lbs or 75 kg)! Also mounted a much lighter Saitek X-55 with good results. Still I would go with solid 18in height speaker stands on either side of the chair for these to eliminate the chair effects. Your best design will not overcome these weight issues.

That is good news as one doesn't have to design for controllers that effect chair movement and a lower cost for development. Meanwhile with your solution for flight controls on the sides one can install their favorite racing wheels on the center plate making the Challenge chair a total gaming solution for the PS4 or even PC play with dedicated IRacing as the T.Flight also supports PC games including ED. I would go with a focused setup for the T.Flight HOTAS 4 with a perfect match for now and if the sales are good move slowly to creating modified versions for other popular light weight controllers. Kept it simple. The T.Flight has probably sold many just awaiting the Elite Dangerous release as well as others looking for a PS4 War Thunder Playseat solution. Going with the market trends can be just as important versus designing a product and meeting an immediate gamer need. How quickly that opportunity passes.

Regards
