This game is only worth playing in VR, shame it sucks!

Let me explain:

The good bits:
  • I use a HTC Vive Pro, so the headset is fine and the graphics are good too.
  • I use a Trustmaster Warthog stick and throttle and I have Logitech paddles for my feet, so actual flying is fine and immersive.

The bits that suck:
  • The need for 3rd party tools to do anything meaning full (examples if the station don't have that 4A module you need & search for best prices to sell.buy your stuff)
  • No build-in keyboard you can pop up and use your mouse to type with.
It just kills the game for me and I have tried hard to "like" it with the obvious shortcomings for VR. I could for a while accept the issues, considering development time etc. and frankly I don't care about there priorities any longer. You want me to play and pay for stuff, then don't make have to exist VR for anything but going to the loo.

Been playing ED since beta and am an avid VR user; I now have a HP Reverb G2 and for ED in particular its absolutely stunning

I previously had a Rift CV1, Vive, Pimax 5K+ and have used a Pimax 8KX, but the G2 is by far my favourite, I don't recommend Pimax at all, what a nightmare

reporting on duty.

I started the journey in VR in 2014 by participating in development of Opentrack and smartphone VR. In meantime i had Acer VR, Odyssey+, HP Reverb and how i am happy owner of Reverb G2.

Smartphone VR/carboard showed the possibility of the future but in true it was the piece of crap. However, after i bought the Acer VR in 2018 then i am playing almost alltime in VR.

I play exclusively in VR. Started with the Cell phone VR, Rift CV1, Rift S and now a Reverb G2.

My current list of VR games: ED, Half-Life Alyx, Ultimate Fishing Simulator, Assetto Corsa, No Man's Sky & Subnautica.

I've found that my interest in VR runs parallel with my interest in ED. Despite having multiple titles that support VR (Skyrim, Subnautica, IL-2), ED is the only game that really compels me to put on the HMD these days. When I'm not in the mood to play ED, I'm not in the mood to play any VR game, and when I'm not in the mood to wear the HMD, I'm not in the mood to play ED.

Let's just say my Rift S has been in its original box for a few months now... Meanwhile I'm having more immersive gameplay with games like Space Engineers and Red Dead Online, despite these games being 2D. If VR gave me the visual clarity of my very nice 2D monitor with the FOV of my natural eyes looking at the real world, I would be more addicted to it like some of you are now, assuming the games available for it were compelling.

People say VR is the future. Perhaps, but not like this. Today's VR may be a stepping stone in that direction, like the Atari 2600 was a stepping stone to the PS5, but there's still a long way to go before it's truly mainstream.

What do think this about this current gen of HMDs, in particular the G2 and Quest 2? From my experience, using my G2, when I have indulged myself and pushed the slider up to native, it's pretty crisp! In fact, playing Assetto Corsa and ED, I can pretty much read the same dials as I can in pancake using my desktop monitor.
BUT
my monitor only goes upto 1920 x 1080, which probably explains the minimal difference between the two. I guess even these devices are far from what 4k people are now used to now??

100% agree. Defo a long way to go before it is truly mainstream.

Sadly I've not played for some months now, it's just become too boring and SSDD. Having a go with XRVR and, for about the 17th time, SkyrimVR ( That just never gets old ).

I think the big killer is FDev's continuing propensity to ruin everything fun. Hey I can make money on passengers missions - ruined, hey I can make money mining - ruined, what else. That said, surface mining got less tedious IMO but it's basically a game of only two activities. Shoot ships or collect stuff. At least in Skyrim I learned to play the flute and chat up Hargravens.

Just saw this. WMR does have a built in keyboard you can use in ED but I think you need to use a controller rather than a mouse to type. With WMR you can embed anything from the desktop into a game, browsers, explorer, the desktop itself, a potted plant, ornaments ( yes, seriously ). Can't recall the damned command to open it but to close it you just say 'close'. All the WMR commands:

I've been playing Elite since it was released and only had VR for a few months now but WOW is it a game changer! Using Valve's Index headset with Voice Attack and the Thrustmaster HOTAS designed for Elite. I've added a custom VA profile to the HCS Elite Singularity profile so I can do things like refocus (alt-tab) if something pops up and a few text entry items so I don't have to type it over and over in the galaxy map. I also have an escape command that presses escape so I can exit elite or back out of things without keyboard interaction. I also use DrKaii's EDPROFILER app! It's a handy app for switching between VR and non VR configs! Thanks DrKaii!

Despite the crappy (relatively) performance and quality, VR is incredibly immersive and I struggle more and more to play ED in "pancake" mode. In fact, I can't remember the last time I did so..

Oculus CV1 user here, and you can pin other windows into the VR space. Especially cool is pinning some EDDiscovery windows underneath the side-panels. But yes, it is a bit annoying that ED is quite reliant on third-party tools. It would be AWESOME if there was some sort of plugin capability for ED to allow people to integrate these tools into the side panels, for example. Or an additional pop-up screen similar to the Galaxy Map or GalNet news. Should be "simple" - just have a cut-down web client display. I'd actually be surprised if this wasn't the underlying tech for some of the info panels already anyway.

I really do struggle with the VR resolution though; compared to my nice 2K 144Hz monitor the difference really is appalling. I'd love to try a G2 (it sounds like it is by far the best currently available) but my rig isn't nearly powerful enough to drive it.

Quite disappointed that FDev has been deprioritising VR support for a long time now - a lot of the new features/displays are a pain to use in VR and unles there are absolutely gamebreaking issues they don't get reconsidered or fixed. Considering Elite Dangerous is probably THE poster child for VR that is a huge shame.

The only other games I play in VR (and these ones exclusively, I've never tried them in pancake mode) is European Truck Simulator 2 and Project Cars 2. But I basically bought the Oculus for and because of Elite Dangerous after having tried it in VR at a con.

EDIT: heh, forgot I had already posted earlier in this thread... not quite a necro, but still an old thread to resurrect :)

The last couple of weeks my VR has been shaky, so I tried playing ED on my 4K monitor instead. First thing I had to do was to fit a docking computer, because I couldn't see where I was flying. Also my Mamba had no soul anymore. I would go as far as to say that VR is a considerable advantage during combat, and depending on the VR capabilities of Odyssey, I'm considering DCS or Alyx as possible escape routes. However, Brünnhilde hasn't sung yet :alien:

The shortage of higher end graphics cards is stopping me from getting back into ED. I only play in VR and have a HP G2. It doesn't look like I will be getting a card anytime soon either.

I managed to get a 3070, by being stubborn and hitting F5 until I could order one. Even that struggles feeding my G2. Keep trying. They are out there. The 20 series is also worth looking at. Otherwise it's assumed that the situation will normalize in 2023

The way it's going I may as well skip this generation of cards and wait for the next one. Whenever that may be.

I've been playing Elite on and off for years (started with the original 1984 version on the BBC Micro, Acorn Archimedes and the Amstrad PC1640), and was a kickstarter for ED. Played it in VR with the Oculus DK2, then CV1, stopped for many years because of move to a new country (so didn't have access to my game PC), and just started again with the Quest+Virtual Desktop+Virtual Cockpit. Despite the lower resolution/screen door effect and playing on a Surface Book 3 with 1660 Ti Max-Q at full Ultra settings (30-40 fps), I'm completely enamored with the immersion. In pancake, I really like the resolution, but at the moment, the VR immersion is worth the tradeoff. In a few years, GPUs and headsets will reduce the tradeoff even more, and in the meantime, it is fine as just the early days of the holodeck!

Yeah - can only play VR also.
Computer, HP Reverb, Virpil gear - all only to play ED, which I think is the best.
I hope other space games come out in the future that are as good.
