Thanks for the reply, it was with the upcoming changes to exploration that the Clipper is being considered. Currently out in the explorca (I do like to explore in luxury!) but on return would like to take the Clipper out, it is only getting the first couple of KLy out that range is needed, after that it is economy hops.

Of course, if that new little Krait-like ship is a super-cool explorer type....

I got to like 50% hull once a couple weeks ago for the first time in a few years. Forgot to check the gravity of a world I was landing on. She sneaked up on me a bit.

As it stands right now, you won't run into a thargoid unless you drop into the random signal sites. So you have to purposely go look for them, and you have to have a ship that is equipped to handle or take a beating from thargoids if you want to survive one. Personally, I have not encountered any nor have I attempted to fight any, too busy doing other stuff to worry about them.

There also have been a couple trips where I died before turning in the exploration data, fortunately I have Cpts Log which I use to track where I have made first discoveries, just dust off the ship and remake the trip, making sure I hit all the prior first discovery systems as well as finding new ones along the way.

I do my own thing in Elite Dangerous and am content with that, the only time I stay in Open is when I am out exploring, before returning I drop into a private group so the only griefers I may encounter are NPCs and they are easy to avoid. I don't play this game to be someone else's content, I play it for my enjoyment and I get no thrill out of taking on another "Commander". I have nothing to prove to anyone so therefore I don't need to fight someone else just to feel good about myself. There are formats for that i.e. in Arena or the PVP League.

The 16t tank is fine, just took mine (outfitting link in sig - updated since I got back to FSD boosters and engineering changes) on a 600kly trip for DECE and had no problems.

I also took one out and the fuel tank was just too small for my taste, got out a couple hundred LYs and returned because of it. Its not fun having to scoop practically every jump, which is ok if you are in a region or just jump to scoopables, but not so fun if you get into the darker areas. But it gets nice jump range when engineered right, and handles well in super cruise, but I don't like the idea of having to add an extra fuel tank at the expense of another more useful module for exploration. I like the Python as a better substitute to the Clipper. Gets roughly the same jump range with more module space. Manuevers the same, just the viewing is a bit more limited if that is what you are looking for.

The DBX is great for jump range, but on a long trip seems a bit cramped, I like to get up and stretch my legs on long trips, can't seem to do that in a DBX. My fringe Explorer is of course the Conda, which turns like a cow in super cruise, but the 75 Ly jump range makes those seemingly distant stars reachable. Also nice to be able to make 300+ Ly jumps from a Neutron boost, can really cover some distance that way.

With the 7A scoop I found you need to really drain it and pick a small star to scoop from before scooping takes more time than lining up the next jump, and I'm not fussed with a manual re-plot every 3 or 4 jumps in the brown dwarf layer.

Each to his own though.
