How many people are still playing in VR?

As someone without VR, can someone please tell me, when VR switches to non-VR ("pancake"?) for on-foot bits, does it still head track?

Big fan of TrackIR, which is so close to working perfectly in on-foot. (HUD and aiming messed up, so have to pause trackir when things get serious).

Asking, cos if i was to get VR, that aspect would be a backwards step if it doesn't still head track while in pancake.

Everytime you disembark the game switches from a full 3D environment to a virtual screen in 3D space. There is no head tracking on foot. Well there is, but only for the virtual space, not the game that is being displayed on the virtual screen. In other words, you don't get a 2D image fixed to your headset, you are in a virtual grey 3D space and see a big screen in front of you.

Edit: The vanity camera is still full 3D with head tracking, as is the jump animation of the FC.

I only play VR simulation type games now. I pretty much stopped playing Elite now because of the poor VR support.

Not helpful. VR works in elite.
I've a custom rig I built around it so l know.
If you truly want to play elite. Play it.
If not, as the saying goes, if you've nowt good to say, say nowt.
And by that I mean constructive criticism is fab. But slagging it off is just not cricket. You need good grounds hehe

It doesn't work properly in Odyssey, hence the pancake rubbish in the FPF part of it. We were promised this would be fixed but FD went back on their promise.

There is nor Elite Dangerous without VR, as far as I am concerned.

Even the virtual cinema screen, whilst on-foot, is preferrable to having to take the headset off and stare at a monitor. I tend to run around in vanity cam mode, praying to something or other that I will not miss some overzealous guard demanding to scan me. Fortunately I am not into murder, so I can go for a bit of time, before I need the HUD, but it is still annoying having to switch back and forth between 2D and 3D...

Do you have a link to that information? As far as I’m aware FDev’s stance on VREDO is still what was put forward by the lead CM:
However, we do strongly believe that VR should only be enabled for on foot gameplay when we have an experience that truly matches the same quality bar that we set for cockpits
…and from:
VR isn't going to be removed, so you'll be able to still play in VR for both Horizons and Odyssey, but only at the level of "development" currently available to you
…who also stated VR bugs and issues will be “considered for fixing” and that minor alterations to the virtual flatscreen (such as a darker surround) had been discussed.

Have never played ED in anything other than VR and can’t imagine I would bother Using a flatscreen. Only have Horizons but considering purchasing Odyssey to see how it looks. FPS has no draw to me but exploring a bit on foot might be enjoyable?

I still play in VR but it depends on what I plan on doing. If I need to jump to a bunch of stars and/or Supercruise for awhile to get to my destination I tend to do that outside of VR along with the on-foot gameplay. Otherwise I try to jump in VR as much as possible since it really makes you feel like you're really there. Plus mining, ship PVE, and SRV exploration is a whole different experience that I wouldn't have much interest if it weren't for VR.

It is....even using the view given on vr foot its still playable. And cos l never take headset off I've grown used to, and configured my hotas accordingly so as to facilitate foot ship srv seamless play.
You'll love it especially the vistas and escapades you get yourself into on foot. Would recommend a g3 artemis suit with at least extra jump on it.

The first person view in Odyssey is that weird flat screen compromise, but you go full VR when you go in to camera mode so you can have a decent view of walkable planets

If you say you have absolutely no interest in on-foot shooters then I don't know if I could recommend Odyssey to you, but there are some bits of VR in it

Got Elite free in Jan? Feb? this year from Epic, started playing in VR from day one; I don't consider ED a non-VR game. I bought ED on Steam 2 weeks later because Epic's launcher is crap when it comes to VR. Bought Odyssey about a month or two after that for the visual upgrade. I don't really go on foot, other than to explore the odd planet or on my Fleet Carrier.

Plenty of other FPS games out there I can play, and that I would play on a flat screen because that's how I play FPS games; on a flat screen. I personally don't play the FPS portion of Ody, but if I did, the flat screen wouldn't bother me too much. Because I don't play the FPS part, I'm not bothered by the performance on foot either; using a 1070 previously and now a 3060 ti, I get a comparable experience in Horizons and Ody on both cards (which is to say both Horizons and Ody run fine on both cards, but the 1070 obviously performs far less compared to the 3060ti, as expected - both Horizons and Ody play similarly in regards to smoothness).

What bothers me more is the lack of anti-aliasing and I honestly believe that if ED had proper AA of some kind then many folks wouldn't find the need to run at high supersampling/hmd sampling rates a necessity. That would have to be a significant portion of the playerbase, VR or otherwise, who would suddenly find EDO performance playable.

TL:DR - I never stopped playing EDO in VR, I don't intend to stop playing EDO in VR. If I had to stop playing EDO in VR, I'd stop playing EDO.
