How many people are still playing in VR?

I pre-purchased EDO… Ive been playing it for around a year now, not sure of the exact version - can’t be bothered to google, however it was all playable and has only got better with each release. I’ve switched to flatscreen for onfoot CZs and tend to split my time between these and other activities so I am not removing/replacing my headset. I have now started flying in flatscreen as well as onfoot, to begin with it was horrible but I’ve since found it just bearable by utilising auto dock/ auto takeoff and auto landing which really alienates me from the game I love in VR but frees me up to quickly do stuff I simply want to get done. As an example I recently wanted to unlock Class 4 corrosive cargo racks. Zipped around from A-B-C….. R-S-T….etc now I am back in VR finding the Thargoid Probes to further go and explore, in my SRV and onfoot, a Thargoid structure or two - all in VR. EDO forced me to us a screen, kinda glad it did as it made me appreciate the game in other ways. Hand on heart though I would not still play this game if it was not for VR.

Me2
0nly the VR has me enthralled.
The rest is frankly a mess
Mission spawns not working as intended - an age old bug that's never been fixed. Extremely frustrating.
Ores stuck in rocks...another ancient bug.
Npc doppelgangers ganking you a 2nd time, yet again another legacy bug.
That horrid mess you get on screen as you enter sc or jump in VR. That's been out since VR started on elite.
The frametimes drops/issues at bases. Defo exclusively odyssey.
And don't get me going on p2p instancing which l think is a total red lady's underpantz.

VR only here. Just recently got Odyssey and immediately went back to Horizons due to horrible performance. Mainly use my trusty old CV1 for Elite, tried it on my Quest 2 but it was a grayish mess, those LCD panels just doesn't compare to the blackness of OLED. So I'm kind of stuck in the old ways.

Vr only, without Vr there is no ED.
I wish they would at least give us an option to lock the on foot screen to headlook.
The cruelest joke they play is on the fleet carrier. If your lucky enough to have one sit at the bridge and watch the jump, for a few glorious seconds you have full VR support … sit there mesmerised by the full glory of a VR Fleet carrier jump, then cry as FDEV shouts “OK enough of the good stuff now back in your box”

I occasionally play but my interest took a nose dive with EDO because:
  • the transition to on foot cinematic whilst it might seem like a compromise solution actually in practice its dire
  • there is a performance hit in EDO which for me results in steep compromises on quality
  • the actual on foot gameplay is pretty wooden anyway imho, I feel its just padded the game out a platform with little meaningful gameplay
  • there are bugs and issues with VR that I just don't see Frontier investing any effort into fixing
  • the core game itself I now find too repetitive, yes the galaxy is large but there are too many glass walls and grey rocks

Hopefully the narrative content will lift things up a level, new GPU hardware might help, heck we might one day see a community manager play in VR...

I've no interest playing flight sims or space sims (predominantly built around space flight) that aren't supporting VR properly, its as important as a joystick vs. mouse these days

Recently returned player here. Started off with Oculus DK2 and then moved to CV1 and am currently using a Pimax 5k+ (the extra fov makes it so much better, imo). Running on an old 4770k/1080 era rig, but still manage to play VR in EDO. Bit annoyed with the grey box, but try to ignore it.

Really hoping for some VR love from Frontier at some point. It's such a huge improvement over flat screen, I doubt I'd ever go back.

I play in VR. My gameplay declined with EDO . The throttle and joystick just aren't designed to use with a first person shooter, but after a while I got used to the flat screen and use mouse and parts of the throttle when on foot. I still enjoy mining, combat and found the recent megaship in AX combat zones a blast.

So I tried again VR in Odyssey and it's still amazing.

I found a good mode of play for myself:
  • when doing work around engineering I play flat so it allows for easy lookup of notes and eddb
  • for exploring I play exclusively VR

The only real problem I encountered is when I switch from on-foot in VR grey box cam back to VR, the performance tanks and I have to relog to recover.
Apart from that I fully enjoy ED in VR again :giggle:

It wasn't even the performance for me, it was that giant flat wall to have to play odyssey on.

Heh, burned to a crisp on a too-hot planet last night, after immediately switching to third person camera on disembarking, and missing all the warnings that would have been in the HUD... Better check environmental conditions before getting out, from now on, I think... :9

Hi all, dumb question, has Nvidia produced DLSS support for Elite Dangerous, either Horizons or Odyssey ?

I'm guessing there is a good technical reason (game engine) why they haven't (apart from Frontiers lack of support for VR)

Still on Pc playing in VR. I don't think I could go back to pancake mode. Yes there are problems on foot with VR, but I don't play the on foot game as the shooting aspect of the game is really basic and there is no point to going on foot for exploration. I was hoping for more such as going into cave systems alien animals and planets like NMS. Or even base building and surface mining on planets with rigs.
Instead we get a cheap knock off of Apex Legends in space.

Tenshi
Try exobiology
I know ! It's repetitive etc. But combined with deep space exploration it can be quite good credits wise. A mere trickle compared to mining and stacking massacres but far more rewarding. Namely tagging.
Now the on foot aspect mmm .. I've grown used to it. Using it to sack bases I'm currently 10 notoriety again lol. But also out In the black in a pimped artemis suit finding samples is still fun... buggy in support. Collecting nearby raws too.
Just saying it ain't all bad.

Me, and for the first time in years, I also play Pancake again as it's the only way not getting mad with the 15-5 cycle in carrier exploration with 79 jumps ahead, as depicted here.

VR it is, apart from that, and I'll upgrade to either a GTX4070 or 3080 for the same reasons I bought my Rift 5 years ago.

O7,
🙃

VR only here. Odyssey performance is fine for me and I've been enjoying the game very much. My only real gripe(aside from the existence of the on-foot 2D screen) is the fact that switching between 2D and 3D causes steamvr to crash in Linux so I'm forced to play in Windows instead.

A shame too because it runs better otherwise.
